The change in functionality only lies in the fact that both of these windows can now in fact be merged into one window. That alone makes it a more 'tidy' way of working, for when you're browsing on a notebook.

Yes, but you have to do it every time.

Not only that but if you hit the wrong button/menu out of the many buttons/menu which open the "chatterbox" the torn off windows can click back together even if open!

You know, the Near Me pane can be torn off, and by default, jumps into the exact same spot as the History panel is on the main viewer.

I don't care if it can be torn off, it goes right back when your done and it shouldnt be there anyway.

I dont get why people dont like the communicate window... just because your used to something else? I just havent gotten it from anyone trying to say whats wrong with it, I love it... even when i have voice disabled i keep using FL viewer... have they added the communicate window to the normal client yet? wouldnt want to go back to the old way, the communicate window rules.

IMs and Chat should be separate because I like participating in both at once.

Friends list should be separate because I should be able to look at who's online and who's not while still participating in local and IM chat.

/me agrees totally with both statements.

I don't understand how you aren't participating, just because you didn't see it for 10 seconds. Its not like you miss anything... the text is still there.

Being able to read in real time while typing in responce to another conversation is faster than constantly switching tabs.

for some people i guess it could be faster... it would come down to personal preference as not everyone has the same idea of what is easier

I hated the old way.... guess thats also the reason i'll often only have 1 or 2 web browser windows open and 10+ tabs

I also use tabbed browsing, but I'm not ussually trying to keep up with multiple dynamically evolving web pages when I do (that and WinXP loves to compact the taskbar, which I hate, but like. If I could change the number of items before it collapses up to about double what it is, I'd be happy).

With my IM clients I keep them all separate, not in tabs.
How I have it:

How I could have it, but don't:
http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~mmj29/temp/IMs2.TIF

I can have up to four concurrent IM session windows before they start over lapping.

Exactly. Also, the chat history needs to be vertically long and horizontally narrow, while the IM tabs need to be vertically short and horizontally expandable as new IMs come in.

Many many people in SL either have large groups, run meetings, or have businesses, and we have to be able to multitask without losing our view of anything.

The only way I can see to walk around, chat, and answer IMs that come in every five minutes (so that I can have ten of them open at once), plus look at friends and group lists, is if all of these come in separate, resizable windows from the get go.

Especially, if you are facilitiating a meeting you need two windows, one with chat history and one with the IM, because both will be moving FAST and you can't afford to have them get mixed up together.

You also still need to be able to visually see the avatars for most of that time, if you're doing your own security in the meeting, or if you want to greet the new arrivals.

I've been using the First Look Voice for a few weeks now, and the Communicate Window is a big pain the a** during any meeting. While they've improved it, they still need to separate the chat, friends and IM back the way they were.

I love First Look, except for that Communicate window. I can have 20+ IMs going, and then do not see the chat. It's really not practical if you're running several businesses that require a lot of quick communication. Ideally, it would be a client side setting, to combine or not, and everybody would be happy.

I keep both of mine short and wide, as I prefer fewer, but longer lines of text, but that is personal preference. My optimal set up with the main viewer has the IM window and the History window 1/2 the screen wide, one on the right, one on the left.

But yes, your post is my feelings exactly.
