I had this problem too, but only sometimes, then I found that, (for me at least), it only happens if I start Windows Live Messenger before I start SL. If I start SL first, I have no problems with it. (Nvidia FX5200 with 256MB).

My older PC still has this problem, and now that the multi threaded rendering is forced upon us, i have to deal with it... The computer I'm using right now is ok. The older PC as you know, makes me feel like I'm on a acid trip because of this. LL please figure out a way to fix this, or at least let us know your working on it.

seeing flashes of lights with new download
05-05-2007 15:32
Since downloading the lastest download on my laptop, all I see are flashes of light to where I cant even play the game. Everything is like a rainbow flashing, especailly when standing next to someone its horrible. Last time with the 14.01 viewer I had the same problem and was directed to a site to download another version but can't find anything on it this time... Any suggestions??? HELPPPPP!!!!!!!

There is no other viewer now. 1.15.0 is a required update, and it uses the First Look rendering code. If you have upgraded your video card drivers, and tried all the suggestions for improving compatibility (most importantly, turning off the avatar vertex program and vertex buffer objects) and it still doesn't work, you may be out of luck.

LL may continue to work to improve compatibility with older video cards, but I don't see them returning to the old rendering code. The new code is a big improvement on systems with modern video cards, and they don't have the development resources to maintain two versions of the code.

disable Fog in Client > rendering > feature menu

It will solve this problem.

Thank you!
More annoying than the rainbow flickering was how everything that had a color but a blank texture turned white.
Turning off fog fixed both problems.

I'm running an NVIDIA FX 5500. I was using driver 78.01 until a few minutes ago. With that driver, I could clear up the whiteout by turning on local lighting and moving to a position that forced lighting to be recalculated.
I updated to driver 93.71, and moving no longer fixes the problem, so I had to turn off fog.

Edit: Windows XP 32-bit by the way.
