Turned local lighting on and everything kept flashing. Lighting works normally with the regular viewer, but activating it on the Firstlook wasnt pretty. Yuck!

I have local lighting on all the time, and I"ve never seen any issue with it in any of the Firstlook versions. It may be your video card or drivers.

Most likely is card or driver related, however the normal viewer displays local lighting just fine with my current card and drivers. Thus this latest Firstlook viewer does not cut it for me.

Kind of a flashing rainbow hued shimmer effect? or just bright-dim-bright-dim ?

I was having the rainbow flicker (only in the first look client) until I updated my drivers last night.

It seems to be gone now... but I haven't been in world enough since updating to say for certain. :)

I had that problem with a GeForce 5200 card - things were strobing. Changed to a GeForce 7600 GS and the problem went away.

This game gives a wholenew meaning to "graphics intensive".

I am having this issue all of a sudden... has always worked fine, but about 2 days ago the flickering started. It is not a rainbow flicker, more like a black smear that turns on and off about 2-8 times per second, when local lights are set in the preferences. This occurs with the regular viewer as well as the first look viewer. At first I tried emptying the cache, then reinstalled the regular viewer, then installed the first look viewer. All the same result, but only since this short while. Nothing has changed in my hardware or software configuration. Anybody else experienced a similar situation?

My rig as follows - I know the graphics are below recommended specs, but has worked so far albeit a lousy frame rate:

Mainboard VT8366-8233 (VIA Apollo KT266/KT333 Chipset + VT8233 Southbridge via V-Link)
CPU AMD Athlon XP/Sempron 1539.9 MHz
SDRAM 512MB 200/400 MHz
NVidia GeForce FX 5200
Microsoft Windows 2000 5.00.2195 Service Pack 4

Edit: No, it doesn't seem to be dependent on the local light setting. Even with that off I get the flicker, just sometimes it goes away. I have no clue what circumstances it might depend on, seems totally random.

I have also noticed flashing textures. Specially when changing clothes or when others change clothes or are in "editing appearance" mode.

I tried to capture a video but the flashing did not come through.

http://home.comcast.net/~gaz2000/Sl-flik-02.avi

but you still can see some of the effect. All the little windows in the Appearance menu that are black were flashing rapidly

No issues until about 10 minutes ago when I was asked to download some client update. Now all the building textures do this flashy, kaledescope technicolor dreamcoat thing thats borderline seizure inducing.

I've played with some video settings but nothing seems to fix it. It's not a constant thing either, just a random brief flicker.

I managed to capture it on screen

I experienced this problem last year when using a nVidia GC, changed to a ATI and it went away, now a nVidia works better with SL than my ATI.... as I don't wish to keep spares of each card for upgrading.... have you tried turning off Bumpmapping and shiny in preferences?.. see if that helps. Also check your GC control panel and turn off parts in there and see if it goes away, sometimes the default is to allow the programme to decide, try turning these to defalut off, one at a time to see if that works.

We’re currently experiencing an issue on the server side completely unrelated to the viewer update that are affecting logins and in-world activities. Of course, this makes any feedback about the new viewer harder to process. Expect a blog post shortly.

I said, "none of that has anything to do with a texture flash" and Neo Linden left the conversation several minutes later.

I have been having a similar problem, but may have cured it on my PC by doing the following within the SL viewer:

Edit > Preferences > Adv.Graphics - then untick "Enable OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects > Apply > Ok

Hope this helps.

My older PC sees this more then 2 seconds from logging in. Drivers are up to date... These are pictures i took of a friends avatar. It only happens in SL since this multi threaded rendering shit came out. (Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 128MB)

Yes I have been having the same problem.. It was going away if I turned off local lighting, but then yesterday, that didn't even work... Running a G-Force FX 5200, 128 mb card. All this has just happen since the first look updates.. I actually was having no problems running the 1.14.00 build.. I think one of the few that wasn't.. Then i dl'd the 1.14.01, and thats when all the flickering textures started.. This is more of an annoyance then anything else, as it doesn't seem to effect anything else.. I updated drivers.. well, the only supported update I could find for that card.. Which I believe was a couple years old.. That seemed to work last night, but then when I logged in this morning.. Flickering textures again... *sigh*

okay i'm having a problem but never manage to get a photo before it crashes. It started with this last viewer my game time is limited to "until i crash" but it seems to be graphics related.

the graphics card has been well updated and reupdated as far as me reinstalling updated drivers, rolling them back , rolling them forward uninstalling them completely.

I get these huge almost "ribons" coming off of things. Today the text ingame is all messed up I thought I was looking at russian or chinese or something because all the letters were chopped up.

I Logout and everything is fine. I run other software and its all fine. I clear the cache I update the already updated drivers and login to find the same problem

the card is a geoforce 7900GT I am or was about to upgrade it to the new fangled ones but that means more ram and I thinkg a larger power supply as mine is only 600 and I dont want to push it.

I"m pretty much convinced I can't fix this and am hoping its cleared up with the new viewer. I"m just adding this to the thread in hopes that someone happens on it and has a similar story

IN any event I'm not totally sure what to do other then buy an entire new card

the crashes well I can remain ingame at present if i am lucky for 10 minutes at most. The previous viewer I could remain ingame all day all night no crashes but had the graphics card issues intermittently. NOw its constant and I am crashing as well.

By crashing I mean the game is crashing to desktop not the computer I can keep working running the computer without a reboot even. IN fact I am posting this right after another crash as fast as I couldload the browser and navigate to this forum looking for similar problem.

Still Broken, Save Me!

Well, I had downgraded back to the older viewer and the graphics flickering went away. Then, todays update was required and flashing is back. Does anyone have any fixes or solutions for this?

I really don't want to buy a new Graphics Card, because I'm still in an 8xAGP MoBo so it sorta means upgrading Graphics, MoBo, RAM Processor...

Grrrr!!!!!

disable Fog in Client > rendering > feature menu

It will solve this problem.

Disabling fog really messes up the view if high up, unless you have draw on max. I found turning off clouds fixed the flicker
