DoC, the 8800GT is only supported under 169.xx, that's essentially the problem, we can't downgrade.

Yep thats exactly the case. 8800GT and now the 8800 GTS (g92) 512's cant downgrade to older drivers, as these cards were not around when the drivers were written.

Only thing I can advise, is to go on Nvidia forums and keep hounding them.
We've started a thread there, just hound them till they fix the problem.

Usagi, You may have misread the point there, I was comparing 8800GT to 7900 GTO,
how the 8800GT could not run WL features, I never said 7900GTO was crap, I just said 8800GT was running worse then 7900GTO in regards to features in WL.

And as for specifications, that's not the case at all.
When I went to buy the GTO last year, I knew exactly what it was. The specs between GTO and GTX are IDENTICAL, only difference is the memory speed. The only difference between GTX and GTO is the GTO's memory speed is lower at 660mhz instead of 800mhz. That's it.

Check this website, the 2 cards are side by side, easy to compare.

One thing I always consider, before installing the latest very latest Nvidia drivers on my 8800's or using the Betas, is that Alienware suggests I wait, till they've tested them and they put them on their own website. This is why the drivers on the Alienware site are slightly behind the times.

I've had some great stability on my system for some time now and I am not going to rush into new drivers anymore. I think overall, Nvidia has made big improvements from the nightmares in the recent past, but I would not like to risk going back into the instability.

I am able to log in using the regular viewer and can survive without Windlight or the Release Candidate.

Going back to the regular viewer my Avatar looks much better at the expense of the great Windlight environement. I hope it's all fixed soon.

wow, and today's new windlight seems to have magically fixed it...though i have to fiddle with the "sky" slider a bit to hide some freakish black rings around my view, everything looks like it did before i got the card :D wonder what they changed to make it work

I JUST realized, that ripple water and vertex option is not available in normal SL :(
Neither is the bump mapped and cloth option for avatar rendering :(

So its in fact WORSE then my old 7900 GTO.

This is what you said.........
Pardon me if i read it wrong

Hey no need for pardons!

It's good, Just earlier the 8800GT did not support shaders at all. So it was a bit of a letdown.
They fixed it somewhat now.

So Fa, can you confirm for me that all the windlight features are working with teh 169.X driver and the latest windlight? (Shiney, glow, water and atmosphere)

I'd like to upgrade but would rather get a clear yes/no/somewhat before trying :D

it all seems to work for me ^^ shiny, glow, sky and water for sure. i wasn't on for too long, and i can't say for sure if the atmosphere stuff is in effect, but pretty sure they got that too. i DID have to fiddle with the sky slider to get rid of the black rings in the sky, but that was an easy fix. i'm quite happy, i was worried i had made a bad choice in getting that card already, cause nice as it is, my main time is spent in sl. so yay :D

I got an 8800GTs or GTX with only 360Mb and it runs SL and Windlight fine.

yeah I have an 8800GTX but have been suck at the 163.X driver because WL didn;t work with teh 169 series. I was lucky, my older card worked, a TON of people couldn;t even use it because the newer cards all needed the 169 series :(

So that's some realyl good news anyway :)

Yup, I can confirm that Windlight 1.18.6.76116 works with all the shiny new stuff on 169.04 under Linux and 169.21 under Windows with a 8800GT.

Kudos to the Windlight team for making it work in spite of Nvidia's best efforts!
