Does WL support 8800 GT 512MB?

Just wondering if Windlook, 'any version' supports my Nvidia 8800 GT 512mb video card?

Not seeing any of the amazing effects I've seen in screenshots.

When "atmospheric shaders" are turned ON , Everything looks like normal SL except, "shiny" textures are transparent, some textures do not show at all. Water is not shiny, no visible sun, slower performance then SL.

When 'atmospheric shaders' are turned OFF, It looks like plain old SL, runs about 15fps slower then normal. Only noticeable difference is the water goes on forever on the horizon.

edit: forgot to mention, i tried 3 sets of drivers from Nvidia
runnin XP SP2.

Here is how windlook , looks on my system.

I read that the very latest nvidia drivers for some reason do not run the shaders.

I'm using version 163.69 and everything works (8800GTX but the driver is the same)

Unfortunately the 8800 GT cannot install that version. So looks like im out of luck on this.

Yup, if you have a 8800GT you're basically screwed (as am I). The driver you need for the 8800GT has broken OpenGL shader support and there's no sign of a working one any time soon.

I did try hacking the 163.75 driver to install it with an 8800GT but it wasn't happy.

Looks like the only fix will come from the team developing Windlight or a possible new driver update from Nvidia.

Guess we gotta be patient, hopefully by the time Windlight is an official release it will have a majority of the bugs fixed.

I think LL are just as stuck as we are. There's an interesting post by Runitai Linden on http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3164 explaining why it doesn't work.

Does anyone know how to complain to Nvidia about things like this? Perhaps if we all complained it'd chivvy them along a bit.

I'm using WL on 8800GTS with nvidia driver 163.75 ,Vista 64 with no problem (well not counting the usual SL crashs). I set the performace slider to ultra.
With previous version,163.69, I got a lot of texture artifacs.

Oh crap, I guess the GT is a newr card than that driver or something :(

THis can ONLY be fixed by nvidia as WL makes MASSIVE use of shaders. I am very dissapointed in them for this :(

We need a new video card company that doesn't have their heads up there you know where. ATI and nvidia have been on top too long they are getting lazy.

You're right on this Hinkley.

Even if we get 5-10 people email nvidia about this it would at least get some attention.
Best thing to do is look on the website and find a contact email of some sort.

nVidia isn't exactly known for listening to their customers. There are forums full of complaints about errors with their drivers and most of the time they've never even acknowledged them. They just eventually show up fixed one day.

Another 8800GT/512 Vista64 SL Windlight user disappointed an unimpressive Windlight experience.

Hi Fa, no its a 8800GT problem. Xp and vista it seems, the last 3 Nvidia driver updates seem to be missing some code or something, not quite sure the exact reason, but the drivers BEFORE that, ones from Sept 2007 I believe work fine, but 8800 GT cannot use those older drivers thats the problem. 8800GTS and GTX CAN use older drivers as they've been around longer.

Let me just say this is ONLY a Windlight issue w/ 8800GT, outside of that this card is absolutely amazing. It is faster then GTS models and just slightly underneath GTX performance at nearly a 1/3 the cost.

The card performs exceptionally, and It will run your normal SL flawlessly. I have everything set to max, 512 view distance and it rarely goes under 35fps.

I JUST realized, that ripple water and vertex option is not available in normal SL :(
Neither is the bump mapped and cloth option for avatar rendering :(

So its in fact WORSE then my old 7900 GTO.

New Nvidia Drivers out today DEC 11, 2007 !

Not sure if they fix the problems, can't test at the moment as SL is down for maintenance.
But It's probably gonna be recommended that everyone update anyhow, so theres the link.

As soon as I test it ill repost.

tested the 169.21 version with a 8800GT before the downtime and it did not work, not the classic nor the windlight.

:(

Not very happy with this situation...
especially the fact that nothing is being done about it, nor being planned to..

yep of course....

doesn't work nor does windlight.
Just awesome a brand new top of the line 400$ video card and its a downgrade in SL....

Tell me about it, exactly the same position here. Bought the 8800GT specifically to play SL with and it's pretty much the only Nvidia card that doesn't work with SL.

And you're right Nvidia don't seem to be doing anything about it. The problem hasn't even been mentioned as a known issue in the release notes of any of the 169.xx drivers. I'm very wary of anything that says Nvidia on it now. A very bad experience on the whole.

to tie these things together a bit better, here's our post on the nvidia forums.

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=52843&st=0&p=290522&#entry290522

anyone know the best method for bitching at nvidia to look into this? maybe if a bunch of us email them? i figure once windlight goes live, alot more people are gonna discover this and they're gonna get quite a few angry emails about it.

https://surveys.nvidia.com/index.jsp?pi=7498eac864dc1950c8f09e040b4a437a < That's their Vista bug report page, you could try that if you're using it with Vista.

i use XP, but some others here may find that link usefull :) this latest windlight update at least fixed my transparent-shiny and fixed glow so i can see that again. now it's mainly just the water i can't see. been a bit, but i think it still worked on the normal client. maybe they could stick the old ripple water in just so we're not stuck with the flat water from years ago

This newest windlight update from Dec 18. 2007, has fixed half the problems.
So now WL is at least playable.

The sky works fine, and shiny textures are no longer transparent.
Atmospheric shaders seem to work ok, the only thing missing is the overbright hazy effect and the reflective water.

I am running ver 158.27 on a 8800 GTX with no problems as far as I can tell. I haven’t tried Windlight however but the “enable ripple water” and “avatar vertex” works fine using this version. From what I can tell 158.27 works for all Gforce series, you can get a lot of the older drivers at guru3d.com on the download page. I can’t vouch for any of the drivers provided on this site however. 9 times out of 10 when you buy a new card, the install disk is going to have old drivers on it. This was my case, it had 158.27 on it. I tried 163.75 and 169.21 both had issues with ripple water and vertex. I fully uninstalled and put 158.27 back on.

Hope this might help someone.

DoC, the 8800GT is only supported under 169.xx, that's essentially the problem, we can't downgrade.
