It's no game. There is no Ls to run around and gobble up.
As a gamer, SL is a life sim, like well, the Sims. Which I don't consider a game, in the classic sence. |

It is a life sim. Just wanted to clear that up for a few confused people. ![]() And you are not a huge nerd. ![]() But seriously, if you think this is a "life sim" then you must have epilepsy and schitsophrenia (sp?) IRL...not to mention a huge proctology bill from all the items that get stuck there when things aren't working right! I could go on with the list. But yeah...it's actually just a game. _____________________

Nope. SL isn't a game, because it's the "Blank Screen of Death," and the "Little Nag Screens of Doom," and the "IM of Destruction!"

SL is a game, just more social and bussiness based than others.

It all depends on how you define "game".
If you define it as an objective and a set of rules, then SL is most definitely not a game. (This is the position I take.) If you define it as a recreational activity, then SL is a game. (But then so is watching TV or going to a park.) I don't consider SL a game, I consider it a platform for socializing and creativity. But so many people call it a game, I don't worry about it much. It is what it is and it's so unique that there probably is not any one word that really sums it up. |

Also, SL is a 3D virtual environment, in which some people choose to play games, some create games, some sell stuff, some buy that stuff, some make friends, some grief others, and then some are content with just sitting in camping chairs for less L$ than it cost them to run their PC and their IP fees... If you get entertained by doing any of the above, SL is still not a game in itself. A game has a definite start time and end time, SL is open ended, in never ends. Thus it is not a game. _____________________

We've already had the Friday Thread, so this must stop right now. I was totally depressed to see that thread closed down by the time I got home. Here I'd had my hissy fit, and I didn't even get a chance to do the Pompous Philosophizing or another Drink Recipe. _____________________

Quite. It's worth mentionning that Strife closed it because of an AR. I think we can all guess who was behind it. Anyway, this looks like a nice thread to hijack /me gets comfy on the thread. _____________________

OH, and SL is not a game.
The people you meet in here are real. They may or may not be roleplaying or idealizing themselves, but their feelings are still real, and unless they're good actors, most of their personality is truly them. A lot of people in SL are just playing, but play happens in RL too, which is also not a game. The people who hang around in SL for any length of time have a stake in something here, usually a friendship circle. That's not a game either. It is true that SL is a tempest in a teapot on a postage stamp, and there's nothing wrong with turning it off and going back to RL for any length of time. _____________________

Though SL may not completely satisfy a definition of a game it resembles one much more than anything else. It doesn't satisfy the definition of a platform either......even less than what defines a game. So where does SL really stand with me? How about a means for entertainment? Someone mentioned that television is not a game..........true. It not a platform either (though it has some qualities of one........like SL). What television is is a means of entertainment or current events (news) or documentaries (extended news). TV mimicks life and shows it to us........so it's not a game, but it's not a platform either. SL more resembles TV than anythng else.
I call it a game....easier for people to understand. But it's really just entertainment. Some day it may approach the level of TV in it's news or documentary capabilities but it sure isn't even close yet. Argue on.........it's a game/means for entertainment to me. ![]() |

Very true. *hands you a drink* My friend once complained to me that customers were asking him how to do a Java Applet, so I came up with this experiment: _Java Applet_ Take some peeled apples and bake them in sugar water and cinnamon until they are soft. Then add them with strong lukewarm coffee in a blender. Add some ice. Add a whole lotta vodka ![]() Hit the blendo button! *wrhhhhhrrrrrr* Pour into giant frosted mug Cute little umbrellas are optional Enjoy! _____________________

I prefer SL to TV because TV doesn't have kewl coloured text and cute little cubes, like SL.
I'll settle back all comfy with Brenda and Conan. |
