But Credit card Verification would keep out a lot more kids than the "I'm over 18" button. Yeah, a combination of the two (like they had when I signed up back in late 2005) gave a lot more protection than what is in place now without the "show your papers at the checkpoint" measures they're working on now. Other than just wanting to pump up the account numbers I don't see what was wrong with that setup. Cel phone verification left a papertrail through the cel phone bill. Any responsible parent that gives their under 18 kid access to a cel phone should be paying attention to the bill to see what's going on anyway. The same goes for CC. Either way, they'd still be in this situation, though. SL's growing popularity will always have an adverse affect...more people will log in and see things! Actually in a way it's the residents fault because we have always had the power to stop unverified "no payment info on file" people entering our land. But then we find friends can't get in because their country apparently doesn't have credit cards etc. I'd have to disagree that it's ultimately the resident's fault. The "payment info on file" system was flawed (obviously) for the very reasons you mention. About 1/3 of people I've interracted with on a steady basis weren't verified, but weren't griefers/underage by any means. Most people want to check it out before they put any money into it. I did! I would concede, however, that the more "at risk" shops and groups should have (and many did) blocked non-payment people from their areas just to cover their asses for the griefer/underage threat. Apparently many didn't! _____________________

Ahh interesting But it wasnt until recently that it was brought up in the Media with reguards to age verification and the internet. I think? Last few months. Slightly more cynical, companies that provide age verification (such as Aristotle) could be the cause of bringing the issue up again, since the old status quo doesn't really gain them a whole lot of customers. (Edited to add that I recall reading an article about online gambling in the US being available to minors through the use of credit cards, which could explain why it came up again recently. From what I found about the 2002 it was online tabacco and alcohol sales to minors that stirred that up) |

An All-Amish Sim!!! It'd be like a Gor sim only minus the sex & fancy stuff. ![]() So yes, Marty, sometime, someday, you may be able to join the SL Amish ![]() No fancy skins, clothes, or scripts allowed. And we'd need builders to make plain wood furniture to sell at high prices! ![]() Mostly it'd be just for the fun of it. And maybe a lil' education for those who've never seen "amish country". It's not like I'm gonna hear from the AMish community anyways!! ![]() |

kids are smart. getting smarter every day. you can stop one or two, you can't stop the curiosity of them all.
maybe it was better to apply them brain shocks so they become stupid and do everything they are told to do. |

I guess you're kinda joking... But just in case: this is not the general French attitude. The complaint was filed by a right-wing catholic group that does not represent the French population. Regards, MK PS: I'm a frog. That's the same sensationalist stuff that was on German TV-again, something from a very small group of people, be it French right wingers or a regional (!) sensationalist "report" in Germany....but everybody jumps on the bandwagon and it's going to be all over so-called "serious" media too.... ...says the kraut. ![]() @Desmond: Ah, I *love* Cabaret! ![]() |

I thought it was the Mennonites who would use those things, not the actual Ammish. Maybe. I've learned not to question the religion of a man holding a chainsaw. _____________________

I thought it was the Mennonites who would use those things, not the actual Ammish. These were actual Amish in my case. their houses were not powered. No use of automobiles. But for work they were just as modern as the best wood shops I have worked in. |

Regards, MK PS: I'm a frog. ------------------- Adding some info: I paid a visit to "Famille de France" web site, the association that has filed the complaint. The full text is found here: http://www.familles-de-france.org/customer/product.php?productid=534&cat=&page=&XCARTSESSID=da82f4c322c197fbc7408195e4ef525f It's a bit long to translate it here, sorry. Yea... kind of like the way the rest of the world believes every American is right on board with the current presidential administration lock stock and barrel thanks to Fox News and CNN. |

But Credit card Verification would keep out a lot more kids than the "I'm over 18" button. Actually in a way it's the residents fault because we have always had the power to stop unverified "no payment info on file" people entering our land. But then we find friends can't get in because their country apparently doesn't have credit cards etc. And why is that the residents' fault? IMHO it's no more our fault to babysit someone else's kids as it is LLs. Yea, I think they could have done more CYA with the CC for "age verification" whether or not a CC means 18 or 16, but as you already pointed out it'd have been a hell of a lot better than just checking a box that says "I'm over 18". But even still, the parents should be warming some butts as opposed to suing LL and limiting our freedoms. Besides, what constitutes a minor? Some places its 21, others its 18, others it's 16, there are places its as low as 14. People need to take some goddamned accountability for what goes on in their own homes and not always point the finger at the "mean, cruel world". |

Nobody out there understands us crazy American types. We're playing these online games to escape the drudgeries of reality, pretending to be all manner of strange stuff. French guys going, " FURRIES, WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH THAT???" Seems some French people dont want their kids to grow up to be an anthropomorphic doggy or something. Yes we dread our personal information tossed out to verify who we are, but for cripes sake, VERIFY THAT WE ARE OLD ENOUGH TO DO WHAT WE WANT, AND GET THESE IDIOTS OFF OUR BACK! This is getting old real fast. The new frontier is getting sprayed with a cold water hose by do-gooders trying to get us off our sexballs and into some sense of moral conformity.

I don't remember seeing anything trying to do away with what goes on in SL. If anything they're agreeing with LL and their age verification efforts. I wish the US moral watchdogs worked like that! _____________________

Let me go to a game store and verify my age with the clerk behind the counter. Let him give me a scrub-off card with my "she's true-blue verified" number that I enter when I log in that night. Then LL will know I am old enough to be here and I will know that LL and Lintegrity have no access, "accidental" or otherwise, to my identity.
If this is really just about age, that would work fine and I am quite happy to oblige. But this isn't about age. This is about selling a demographic. Selling you. Selling me. Selling us. And I will never comply. I'll find some other outlet for my imagination. If I were the only one gutsy enough to resist, so be it. But I won't be alone, not by a long-shot. I am part of a vast throng who will not give this entertainment venue such privileged information. And our decision to march out of SL will set in motion an avalanche of departure until the whole experiment crumbles, and the Lindens wake up one morning with the sudden realization that they've ripped the heart out of the goose that laid the golden egg. Of course they'll have sold SL to someone by then, so it will be someone else's problem. |

I thought it was the Mennonites who would use those things, not the actual Ammish. It is, the Mennonites will use powered tools, ect, to a limited degree. They even drive cars, but they have specific rules about them; no radio, no ac, and the car has to be black. -- On topic; Again, this crap is getting out of hand. Exactly how much pull does this group actually have?? How likely are they to succeed in winning a case against LL, and if LL implemented the Age Verification immediately, would it curtail the lawsuit? This is getting insanely stupid. Second Life is for adults, 18+, period. They need to bring it back to that again, and soon. EDIT; To all the people who are against age verification; meh! I am sick of wondering if people are freaking kids! I am sick of hearing about "this is going to be taken away" and "they are going to sue us because of the minors gaining access" and people worrying if they are going to be banned for wearing a freaking leather collar around their neck and having someone call them slave! This is ridiculous! Second Life isn't for freaking kids, and I don't want to play with a bunch of kids. Kids are obnoxious little know-it-alls and have no place in my Second Life. _____________________
