Well...I'm glad my lack of knowledge concerning proper grammar and use of pronouns has managed to derail a good many posts in this topic, thus distracting everyone from the good natured and unselfish act mentioned in the first post.

Excellent......exxxxceeeelllent.

*steeples fingers evilly*

I'm sorry I mentioned it. From now on I'll keep my thoughts in my own head....and Colette's.

*sighs*

Sorry about my participation in the grammar discussion. I had no intention of derailing the thread. I just wanted to clarify a thing or two.

I really appreciate seeing threads like this. We get plenty of complaints on the forum. It's nice to see someone who has had a positive experience in SL and wants to share it.

Oh, and welcome Rat :)

Now, I am a full-monty anti-feminist - man-on-top all the way - and even I have always thought it was unfair to lump both sexes under "he." I mean, I LIKE women. But all the work-arounds to deal with it are flawed.

"He/she" is the most effective, but awkward-looking on the page.

"He or she" is effective too, but gets pretty tiresome when you have to repeat it several times in a paragraph.

Alternating he and she is confusing to many readers and gets in the way of comprehension.

"They" sort of covers it, and I frequently use that formulation myself, but yeah, it's a completely inconsistent usage where you really need a singular pronoun.

The English language needs an upgrade!

Id be all for using "She" in these cases for the next 300 years, then "He" can have a turn again.

This is second life, maybe we need our own language?

Anyway, way back when I was new, people were nice to me and I got a few freebies here and there. Now, I try to give back to the new people in the world. Random act of kindness never go unnoticed.

Worry not Chloe. My tongue was planted in cheek when I posted that one. As an educator myself, I understand the urge to chime in. In fact I am resisting the urge to chime in on the Historical side of the debate. :p

I considered quickly listing 5 to 10 male dominated cultures that predated the catholic church, as well as 5 to 10 that rose independent of it -- but I felt wasnt worth the effort.

lol people shouldnt get their history from Dan Brown.

LOL. Don't worry, you weren't on my target list. But you already knew that.

Good. I just wanted to let you know that I had absolutely no desire to shift the focus from the original post. I generally try to avoid being pedantic (trying to police discussion boards for grammar would send me to an early grave), but I occasionally feel the need to offer what I know :)

Now, to get things back on track . . .

Just last night, I was going to skip going to a club to hang out with one of my friends because I was running low on lindens and didn't want to spend what I had on tips (sometimes, I'm cheap). She immediately sent me 500 L so that I could come. I sent the money back to her and decided to quit being such a miser, but that she did this freely without being asked just shows what a good friend she is. I've also received numerous articles of clothing, etc., from my friends, some of which they gave me before we really knew each other.

There really are good people on SL, and from my experience, you don't have to look too hard to find them :)

My significant other posts to a message board with a large number of male, female, bi, gay, neuter, trans and don't-want-to-say posters. Their invention of a gender-neutral pronoun is: he/she = ze, him/her = zir, his/hers = zis.

Since I've started in SL I've had free clothes, shoes, skin, textures, and more LMs and help than I can count. I'd like to publicly thank you all; you're all wonderful, and rest assured I'll be trying to pay it forward wherever I can.
