discovered a bug at a casino that pays out to much

hi there,

i have been playing a casino/camping system and have discovered a bug that causes the creator (all payouts are handled by creator not the owner) to pay me more than i am supposed to get paid.

Now its not because ive been trying to hack their machines, i wouldnt know where to start. Its some sort of problem with their code.

What should i do? (i am tempted to keep playing and teach them a lesson about making sure your code is in order but at the same time i dont want to get any trouble for abusing somebodys poor coding)

Would linden labs kick me out of secondlife if i were to keep playing these machines that pay out more than they are supposed to?

SHould i report this to the lindens or perhaps the creator (maybe i should charge them a fee for testing their machines for them, LOL)?

What are your thjoughts about this?

Other than the imminent temptation to carry on and keep quiet .. I guess conscience would suggest contacting the creator.
Morally and in the spirit of community I think that the best thing to do.

P.S. I don't think Lindens would be interested basically.

I would simply IM the person paying you to tell them about the problem. What goes around comes around. If you like to camp/gamble, in the end it will do you no good if one of the honest places goes out of business.

Also I wouldn't dream of charging them a 'fee' just because I happened to stumble on an issue with someone else's gambling machines/vendors/whatever. I would dream of it even less if I actually benefited from stumbling on that problem by getting more money than I was owed.

Let the creator know.
If you are lucky, he might give you a tip for telling him, since you telling him will save him future expenses. That happend to a friend of mine. But I wouldnt expect anything. To keep playing them, is basically intentionally stealing.

my thoughts are :

A) did you really need to ask this question ?
B) its morally wrong to keep taking the money and you should let him know
C) are you happy exploiting money from someone knowing its obviously a mistake they are unaware of ?

its all too easy to think this is just online so who cares but we are all RL people, if everyone kept that in mind more often maybe SL would be a more plesent place to live in

LOL!

Jen, easy answer... If they were your machines, would you appreciate the honest SL citizen or the dishonest one who bled you dry?

Thus shines a good deed in a weary world.

Aren't Casinos illegal?

LL will care as little about it as they do about casinos who don't pay out when they should.

Casinos aren't moral, so why should you be? Enjoy.

95% of all gaming machines in SL are rigged and unfair; they do not function as their RL counterparts do. Bleed the crooks dry.

But if we make our moral choices based on someone else's bad actions, then what is moral will be decided by the lowest common denominator and all hope of a good community vanishes. Just because someone else's mom lets their kid jump off the railroad bridge doesn't mean you have to.

Perhaps the owner had tried to change the code so they paid out less than they were supposed to and made a mistake? In which case surely it's best to bleed them dry?

Re: contacting Lindens; They've expressly said that they won't have anything to do with inter-resident monetary issues, so that's not an option.

95%? Really? Do you have any facts to back that up, or is that just PFA? I personally suspect many are rigged, but I wouldn't care to speculate on the percentage.

IM the creator and explain what you have found. It never hurts to accumulate a little good Karma.

Morally it's the right thing to do. Using the morality (or lack thereoff) of the casino business as an excuse to cheat (as some others have suggested) degrades oneself and makes the world that little bit worse.

Hehe a rhetorical question. Obviously there are no facts to back that up. Just pure speculation. The fact is even if none of the games were rigged most people would still lose their money gambling in casinos just like in real life casinos. The odds of these games always favor the house and the house never loses at the end of the day.

I would IM the Creator and let them know. After that it's their responsibility to inform all owners of the potential bad coding.

this is a little like the other thread where the lady put out camping chairs and then complained that they were being used.

they put up the casino, and now it's paying off. they really can't complain.

but, i agree that you should 'at least' contact the person who's actually footing the bill. at least once. to ease your conscience and be a good human. if you use it until they fix it, oh well. it's you, or someone else. might as well be you.

just like the camping chair dilemma.

To you and those others who are in the "milk-it-dry" camp: Is this just because it is a casino, or would you just as willingly exploit any other mistake made by your fellow residents?
