For the past 4 days I cant log into Second Life, or I should say it akes about 100+ tries to log in.
It always says...."You are being logged out of Second Life. Your account will be available at (gives a time) "
Some times if I try 100 or more times, I keep getting that message over and over and over abd over and over and over....then BOOM I can log in! Well as you might imagine it is like a ray of light in the dark, through tears of joy at last I can log into Second Life! Oh my God then I stay on as long as I can , I fear logging off because I know Ill not be able to log back on, but o dear I sometimes fall asleep at the keyboard and it automatically logs me off. Then of cous=rse when I try and logg back on I get this lovely message....
"You are being logged out of Second Life. Your account will be available at (gives a time) "...over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and overr
Is this noraml and does everyone experience this when logging into Second Life? If so, why do NONE of the other games I play do this? They usually log me right in no problem first time evry time.
PS I have tried deleting Second Life and downloading it again but the same thing happens....

No, it's not something that happens a lot to everyone. It does sometimes happen to almost everyone. The problem even has an unofficial layman's term........"ghosted". The problem happens when, for some reason, your avatar is not immediately logged off by the servers when you quit or get logged off for whatever reason. The two most frequent causes of that happening are that you lost your connection to the servers or that your viewer crashed. Those two situations often leave the servers to believe you are still logged on when you are not. A "ghost" of your avatar is even present at the location where it all happened. The servers should log you off shortly after the event that triggered the problem but that does not alway take place so you are left with your problem. Most of the time the mere fact that you try to log again kicks the "ghosted" you off and allows you to log in again.........that's why the message is telling you to wait the 5 mins or so. I've been ghosted before (gotten the same message). In almost every case waiting the 5 minutes worked and I was able to log in again..........in the couple cases that it did not work I found that repeatedly hitting the log in servers with requests to log in while you are ghosted only lengthens the time it takes to get in. If you can't get in after 1 or 2 attempts (waiting the requested 5 minutes between trying) you should consider requesting a sim restart. Something's wrong and only two things will fix it.........time (which could be a very long wait, such as days) or a sim restart.
All that said there is little anyone can do to help you with your seeming chronic problem. It appears that even if you log off properly you still get ghosted. That could stem from almost anything. But the first thing that comes to my mind is that you crashed during the log off process......that can happen and you won't know it simply because you arrived at your desktop like you expected. But the servers did not get the proper information that you are now logging off. Some computer specs would help. What veiwer(s) are you using? How current are your video drivers? When was the last time you reset your modem or router (if you have one)? What operating system are you using? How fragmented is your hard drive (if you are using a Windows machine)? Your ISP download speed (tested, not advertised)? What's going on background wise on your system while in SL? Anything that will give a clue as to what may be happening.
You really are giving us nothing to work with. Just a problem you are having and asking us if it's normal.........well, it's not normal. But I think you want help getting it resolved. So give us something to work with.

ugh....that's a very annoying issue....but the WORST thing you can do is continue trying to log in every minute.... Walk away....let the system complete the log-out for a good 15 minutes....THEN try to log in. This was an issue I had a few times when I first begen my SLife.....and it drove me absolutely bonkers until someone finally told me to stop trying to re-log so quickly. LOL Every time you try to re-log....it delays the time it takes for the system to log you out. So in effect....you're prolonging how long it will take before you can successfully log in again. (at least this is how it was explained to me) Once I stepped back.....stopped re-logging like a maniac....and waited a while.....I was able to get back in. Usually the ghosting will resolve itself....and I have rarely ever had that problem again. If I do see that message....I don't try to log in for at least 20 minutes and I've never had a continued problem. Hope this helps.

PS I have tried deleting Second Life and downloading it again but the same thing happens.... You've definitely got a ghost somewhere in world. I know this won't help you at all but there are LOADS of ghosted avatars dotted all over the grid currently - a sign that SL is particularly unstable. When I ghosted, LL advised me to do the following: . Get the Second Life log in screen up . Click on the Edit tab at the top of the screen . From the drop down menu you get preferences . From there, click on network and clear group cache. . Next step was to ctrl and quit the log in screen and wait for 15 minutes. . Then I was told to get the Second Life log in screen up again. . Change the log in point to Pooley But if this doesn't work (and it does apparently work for some people, but it didn't work for me), the only thing left for you to do is go to http://www.secondlife.com/support and submit a support ticket. Explain: It always says...."You are being logged out of Second Life. Your account will be available at (gives a time) " ... and that you believe you have a ghost somewhere in world. LL might be able to locate your ghost, as I would think you are showing as inworld somewhere. And then they would have to do a region restart to clear your presence. And good luck!

I know SL is having a bit more than normal issues lately (mostly with lag, not crashing viewers) but the problem being as persistant and often as stated I don't think it's SL that is causing the issue. Something else is going on in addition to the lag problems grid wide.

What kind of internet service do you have? ( I see now that you have cable)
Are you on a network?
If on a network, is it wired or wireless?
What is the brand and model of your router, assuming you have a router?
Are you in a college dorm, workplace, or anything other than a private residence?
If you have a wireless network, try using a cable instead.
What kind of anti-virus and other anti-malware software do you use?
Do you use a firewall?
Have you configured your ports properly?

this has been happenning 3 days, sometimes I CAN log in after about the 70th try As near as I can tell that is a 5 year old graphics card. I read the reviews for it when it first came out........pretty close to the top of the line at that time. But, today it's a dinosaur........a slow one at that. As I implied in my first post there is a very distinct possibility that you are crashing on log out, which gets you ghosted, therefore making it difficult to get back in world. I don't know which Windows platform you are using so I picked XP 32 bit for my search at nVidia's driver download site and came up with this as the most current driver: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_175.19_whql.htmlThat driver is almost a year and a half old. That means, in my mind, that nVidia has stopped support for that card. I did a search for a Vista 32 bit machine: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_96.85_2.htmlThat driver is almost 3 1/2 years old. That definitely shows nVidia's dropped support for that card. About the only thing I can offer right now is that you check the driver version you have installed now and if it's different from the drivers I found think about downloading and installing whichever fits your Windows platform.

It would seem the sim may have issues, have suggested he speak with the owner and request a region restart, see how it goes. I just wonder why LL aren't doing more to support people, though, actually; Linden Homes aside, they don't really seem to be doing very much to keep their long-term residents (and maybe this is for another thread)!!!

Just the other night I got LL to restart Leda (or whatever sim Yandni's Junkyard is located in) within 2 or 3 mins of me contacting them using Live Chat. That is not the first time I've requested sim restarts and had a successful response in less than about 5 or 10 minutes. I don't see a problem in that particular area of customer service. On mainland sims it appears LL doesn't like ghosted avatars any more than the ghosted avatar likes being one.

The owner is very interested in his sim's performance. You'd be doing him a service to advise him of the problem's you are and have been experiencing. He might not know of the problem and if everyone remains quiet on the subject it just gets worse.......he could lose customers over it Definitely tell him and ask for a restart.........I'm 99% sure he will appreiciate it.

Everybody knows SL can get a bit weird at times - as long as you don't make it sound like you think it's his fault, he might be thankful. (then again, I've never heard of the guy so I have no idea)

From: Marigold Devin I think we should appoint you official negotiator for sim restarts ) I don't want that job...........I'd rather model my mermaid tails. I just have not seen any reluctance what so ever in dealing with LL on sim restarts. They seem extremely eager to get ghosts off the grid.......I'm not exxerating either. A polite Live Chat request stating the location, who's ghosted, how you know they are ghosted (or why they appear to be ghosted) is all it takes. I've Live Chatted with both Linden avatars and what I believe to be "hired" help.......all have been quick to solve the issue. Perhaps because it's so easy to do if I've already done all the hard stuff like locating the avi. I don't know........but, so far, my batting average is 1000. This goes for mainland sims only........I've never had the occassion to deal with a private sim owner.

I will review the advice given above and see if I can try something else. Oh well there goes another 45 minutes trying to log in over and over.... Steve, as you're using up loads of time already, please will you try something. It will test everybody's theories so far in this thread... Please create an alternative account. It will only take you a few minutes to do so, and to go through the orientation process. And then see if your logins are normal with that alt account. If they are then it means its highly unlikely its your "dinosaur" (!!) system causing your current log in issues. You will be helping me too if you do this and I will speak to you later inworld, if I get the chance to be on the PC for longer than 5 mins at a stretch today. Also, if you do get to log in as Steve again, please amend your friends list, so that I can see where you are inworld, and maybe I will be able to locate your ghost that way. Anyone else who wishes to call in a Linden friend and help out a fellow resident, please feel free to do so. I am sure LL have the technology to simply be able to locate someone if they are showing as online inworld, even if only as a ghost.

But my main account Steve Atlanta requires about 100 tries to be able to get onto second life That sort negates my guess that it's driver issue of some kind.........which is good in the sense that your card apparently no longer has support from nVidia. But it does offer some more ideas that come to my mind. First I would go to preferrences again. In addition to clearing the cache (yes, I know you've done that numberous times but do it again) also clear your browser cache (believe that in on a tab called "Web". You might also change which browser you use (if it's set to the built in browser, change it the external browser or vice versa). Something is different in your primary account which is causing your problem. It also is telling me that your issue is not with SL but something that set or different in your viewer preferrences and/or set up.

Could it be some sort of attached item? I would think something like an RP hud or something else worn that is communicating with the system could hang you up?

Of that I am 99.9% sure. My online tracker has been sending information to my email, telling me as Steve Atlanta he is online for 14 minutes, then offline for 1 minute. "Typical" ghost behaviour when a person is unable to log in until -- Pacific Time. The issue is therefore with SL, although maybe ultimately not caused by SL... (to be continued)

The symptom is that Steve is ghosted.........the problem is why? SL is not going to trouble shoot Steve's computer setup, installation, connections, hardware or anything else. That's what I am trying to help with. Continually putting the blame where it is not, does not fix a thing. Whimsycallie's suggestion is a very good one......one I had not thought of. It would be worthwhile to try detaching all and try logging off and back on again.

I thought that it might be an attached item, but I had none! Unless you count my hair, but thats nots scripted and never caused a problem before...
I have examined my avatar, what hes wearing, where he logs oput, and next time I get on I might try and delete MANY things from my inventory as perhaps I just have too many things, more than 50,000 items.
In any case it is still a mystery to me, and Second Life wont help via a normal ticket because apparently I am not a "member" which is weird because I pay abot $40 a month tier on my land that I own.
I might try to become a "member" just so I can get some help from SL, btw I dont think re starting the sim will help, because I set my new home to Orientation Island, which is a totally different sim which doesnt even run scripts, and it does the same thing.
I did talk with the lady who sold me my land but she speaks French so I didnt make much progress there.
Since I log in so easily with my alt, I am convinced something is wrong with my main account, but I just dont know what. I wonder if there isnt some way to "re boot" my account, but isnt that whays supposed to happen when you log off then log back in? Man I just dont know what to do.
BTW I researched my video card and installed the latest drive and it didnt help. I had a n=ew driver installed a little while ago it is...GeForce 9500GT and the guy told me it should run SL no problem

This is very possibly likely, in some cases. I remember one of the Linden support people did advise me when I ghosted on an alt account, that it was probably a HUD I was wearing that had caused me to crash during a teleport. This is a very useful point you make. Obviously, because of all the users being able to add content all of the time to Second Life, there are bound to be constant glitches in the system. But its impractical to remove all HUDs before teleporting ((

You can "reset" you account by uninstalling SL from your computer (again). But before you install again do a thorough search of your hard drive for anything related to SL and manually delete the files. You might have to show hidden files to get them all. That should get you back to where everything is new again for preferrences you might have set previously. You'll get the pops and tips like you did when you first joined SL
That might help.......and if it's something you've set or changed since beginning SL that is causing your problem it will help. You can upgrade your account to premium and try Live Chat if you want. But, I'm afraid LL won't be able to help you at all. It's NOT something that SL is causing. It could be something in anything you are wearing that is causing your problem......but, if that's the cae, you need to find it (LL can't do that for you). It's possible with such a large inventory you could be having a problem like this.........large inventories have caused crashes for some people and crashes often result in ghosted avatars. It's something to try anyway.
