None of the scripts that produce "!quit" include in the text they produce the name of the script's owner and the object's position and key, do they? I wonder why not? Since what they are doing is a good thing, the people and object responsible ought to get proper credit, don't ya think?

This all sounds insane.
Do I really want to come back with all the stuff going on these days? (I dunno ... I lose my phone line until they finish digging up the road and it all goes even MORE gaga!)
**edit**
Eva have you tried uninstalling and doing a fresh download? Hi Cherry, Thanks for your advise, but yes i'v tried that several times... Any other ideas? Eva

Hehe i downloaded that IMResponder bot. Used it on my own defeater script i had in my inventory. I love the message it tells the owner. It's exactly what i would say.

I encountered my first "quit" message two nights ago. Admittedly I don't go shopping often.

From: Joannah Cramer Uhmm no. The handler for !quit IM was part of code of the 'original' copybot which was put in the libsl SVN repository and consequently got out from there in compiled form, both in world and slEx. That version of copybot never asked for persmissions to copy, btw.
As such, the !quit messaging did work on the initial 'public' version of copybot, though re-compiling the excutable with support for that particular command changed or removed was fairly easy so that's what (presumably) eventually happened. Oh, I see - my encounters with CopyBots have all been with ones that asked permission. My mistake.

I wonder why not? Because the copybot code (used to) compare received text specifically with the phrase "!quit" and altering it in any way would render the command unrecognizable. The owner can be found the usual way, through right-click and edit.

I've never *seen* the silly things - I just keep hearing them. These days I figure out who owns them when they show up as muted.

The owner can be found the usual way, through right-click and edit. Not true at all. Here is the output from one such device: From: someone [15:22] Copyright Protection Version 3.001020: !quit [15:22] Copyright Protection Version 3.001020: CopyBot Protection Mark III [15:22] Copyright Protection Version 3.001020: Featuring:- Dynamic Protection with Low Spam. This includes a good bit of text beyond "!quit". The additional lines of text could include the object owner's name, and location of the object, but don't. Even using one line of message, the object's name could be changed to the owner's name plus the object's location. The objects can only be right clicked if they can be found, and finding them is not the easiest thing to do, particularly the ones that move around and change names. There is no technical reason the "!quit" senders can't identify themselves and provide the location, key, etc. of the sending object. I suppose those using the devices must be so modest they don't want to take any credit for their public service.

I wander if LibSL scripts can be written that will automaticly add those spammy things to your mute list, AR them, and open the dialog for you to purchase the item you came for at the same time.

Does anybody know why people operating the copybot defenders always seem to make them invisible, tiny and hidden inside something else? It's almost as if they don't want legitimate people to be able to find them.
I had an amusing situation a few days ago, I tracked down one of these items and IM'd the owner, he replied saying he was aware of how useless and annoying they were, but he was still looking around to try and find his own defenders so he could remove them!

Ran into similar problems in Tangna. The neighboring sim had a mall on the border. They had a "I will only IM you once" copyspammer. It detected me in the next sim and SPAMMMMMMMMMMED me to death. Too me forever to track them down.
I have taken to alerting the owners of these objects that they offer NO protection and only drive away legitimate customers. Most are unaware... others just ignore the complaints.

From: Domneth Dingson you can mute it by name and it will never bother you again at your own residence. Sorta. Each individual object has to be muted seprately. So if your neighbor(s) have more than one (and knee-jerks always do)... you will get no peace.
