From: VooDoo Bamboo I would bet my life that everything is logged if only to save their Linden Butts if the law needs those records for some reson. They may not keep them log but I bet they have them. Yes, my thoughts too. Also, when compressed that text chat will be manageable and occupy just a fraction of the uncompressed space.

It would be smarter to have a strict retention policy. All logs and emails are deleted after 1 year on a rolling basis. This way, when a court subpoenas records from them, they can safely say "we'd love to, but we deleted them just like we do with all emails and chat logs over one year old. nothing special about THESE logs at all... move along."

From: Zaphod Kotobide Off topic, but since this thread isn't good for much else anyway- I find it really difficult to believe that every chat and every IM is logged by Linden Lab's servers. That would require an insane amount of storage capacity in the database. Is there anyone who can confirm that all of it actually *is* logged? 40,000 plus residents all yammering away 7 days a week 24 hours a day? Even if over 24 hours it averages 30k.. that's astronomical. If my experience with chat logging is any example, I agree. It seems rather an insane waste of resources to do this, because even with only 20 people chatting it and having that chat converted into a timestamped word file, I ran my game out of storage after two days. But here's the thing, in my case, I wasn't required by law to keep some form of record of all 'chat'. I think Linden Labs is required to, in case of prosecution. It wouldn't be stored on the asset server, but probably a smaller system that sorts and stores everything in the most efficient manner possible. The program I was using wasn't efficient at all Do I think they read all these logs? Only if they were extremely bored. I just set my word program to search a specific name and didn't bother with anything else. I imagine they do the same, except again, they might have a program to do it for them.

From: Kitty Barnett [...]On-topic: Don't ever buy anything from someone who isn't well-known, there is absolutely no protection for consumers. This is completely understandable, and completely discouraging to anybody with a creative idea for a new product. Ultimately, it's not the fault of the "consumer" focus of that quote, but that of disreputable merchants and their abuses. But it's really the most disheartening thing I've seen in or about SL, ever.

With all due respect to Kitty, it's bad advice. Rather, do your homework, avoid disreputable merchants, and spend your money where you feel confident you're getting a fair deal. There are MANY content creators out there less than a year old, with hardly any reputation at all, who are doing GREAT things. They deserve our business.
