I just through away my anti-idle because the Client/Character/Character Tests/Go Away when idle option when unchecked allowed me to be AFK for hours without getting logged off. The latest viewer update broke that feature. Does anyone know of a work around without going out and buying another anti-idle device?

What is the purpose of a device that keeps you logged in while you are not using SL?

What is the purpose of a device that keeps you logged in while you are not using SL? Only thing I can think of is camping. I'm sure I am somehow wrong. _____________________

The answer is within your question.
![]() I will often keep myself logged in while at the office, drag the viewer onto the other monitor. It's nice to be able to peek in periodically when I'm at my desk, check on IMs, whatever, without having to go to the hassle of logging in. What is the purpose of a device that keeps you logged in while you are not using SL? _____________________

Only thing I can think of is camping. I'm sure I am somehow wrong. Given the current state of the viewer, it's safer to stay logged on most of the time. Use the right program, and you can minimize without getting logged out. Of course you probably want to be in a private place while your avi cools her heels. _____________________

What is the purpose of a device that keeps you logged in while you are not using SL? I just started using this function recently, luckily I haven't upgraded to the new viewer yet. It seems that since the last upgrade, my av will sometimes go "away" after only a few seconds of not touching the mouse, even though I have my prefs set at max. I was tired of having my head slump down when I wasn't really away. Also, lots of times, I get involved in reading the forums or browsing on my second pc, but I also like to stay logged in to listen to my radio station and not lose touch of whats going on in world. I've even left SL logged in while I've made a quick run to the local store for cigs or coffee. |

I can understand not wanting that annoying "Away" thingie to turn on when you are actually there, but why do you want it to not display why you are at the local store? I'm probably just confused. _____________________

Character tests/Go Away/AFK When Idle broken
06-26-2007 15:25
Getting back to the original poster in this thread, the question is if this is a bug in the latest version of the SL application, or if it is an intentional change?
I've reinstalled the prior version so I can sit at a paying bench when I am AFK in RL. |

I think it is a bug, I remember when the feature is installed in the first place and I haven't seen anything about removing it.

I am not sure if its still happening but with every upgrade you need to disable away which is in character test, client but even doing that if there server or isp issue you'll still crash sometimes. Some people don't like the afk slouch and turn off away for that reason too.

Some people don't like the afk slouch and turn off away for that reason too. Yes, with the new upgrade I indeed unchecked (disabled) Client/Character/Character Test/Go Away--AFK When Idle. And no dice, the feature no longer works as it had in the past. It is either a bug with the new release, or some undocumented and intentional change. I would think it's a bug, and I've already reported it. If anyone reading this is also affected by this, I'd send in a Bug Report to Linden via Tools/Bug Reporting/Report Bug... or the equivalent. |

It's broken. I have the same problem. Tested it 5 times by idling with Go Away/AFK When Idle unchecked. Reported it too.

Character tests/Go Away/AFK When Idle broken

It happens on 1.17.1.0 and 1.17.2.0 viewers. I got logged off after 30 min every time even the Go Away/AFK When Idle was unchecked. It was a system message warning me I was about to be logged off. Someone already posted it as an issue on <https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1406> under VWR-1406. I left my comment there too.

Well I guess this going to be a very unpopular opinion, but I think you SHOULD get logged off if you aren't actually using SL. You are using up system resources and causing lag to the people who ARE actively online.
Are you guys really having such massive problems logging in on an ongoing basis? I've been here for five months, logging in 2-5 times every day, and have only failed maybe five times total. I realize that's probably unusually good performance, but it makes it hard to believe that everyone else's logons are failing more often than they succeed. |

I guess we weren't all lucky enough to have the option of choosing the special golden "membership of good fortune" like you were. There are a lot of pessimists concerning the stability of the grid, or don't you follow the forums on a regular basis? _____________________

You are using up system resources and causing lag to the people who ARE actively online. For example, there are times when I have to reduce the SL window temporarily (which also reduces the load on my computer) to work on some other stuff, visit a web site, answer a Skype IM, etc., etc. The act of reducing the window without unchecking the "Go Away/AFK When Idle" causes the avatar's head to drop and the "away" message to present. This is annoying to other avatars, especially if it happens over and over and over again. |

There are a lot of pessimists concerning the stability of the grid, or don't you follow the forums on a regular basis? Yes, Jannae, I follow the forums very closely. This is a place to ask for help with problems, so problems are a lot of what we see here. That doesn't mean everyone is having these same problems -- it's just that most people don't feel the need to ask for help when everything is working as expected. I am not a pessimist, but I am concerned about the stability of the grid just like everyone else. My point here is that I feel the act of staying logged in when you are NOT using SL actually HURTS grid stability by putting unnecessary strain on the system. If you need to check back in every few minutes, that's one thing. A 30-minute automatic logoff time would certainly allow you to do that without requiring a special effort to remain logged on. But if you are keeping your av logged on for hours while you are away the whole time, I feel you are acting in an irresponsible manner with little consideration for the stability of the grid or the people actually using it. |

Well, this goes beyond using the feature (that currently doesn't work) for sitting somewhere and not get logged off for inactivity. Kell, I agree this is a perfectly legitimate use of this feature, and support having this aspect of it fixed. ![]() |

I am not a pessimist, but I am concerned about the stability of the grid just like everyone else. My point here is that I feel the act of staying logged in when you are NOT using SL actually HURTS grid stability by putting unnecessary strain on the system. My own SL experience has been fairly good except for the loss of some very expensive no copy items from my inventory a few months back, and a recent problem with payment info on file (aside from the occasional teleport disaster or griefer assault). I myself have had few log in problems, and those have been related to mass problems on the grid, affecting everyone. Perhaps I have the special golden "membership of good fortune" also, but I don't remember signing up for it. However, I can see from many of the forum threads over a long span of time, that this is not the case for everyone, and that more than a few people have log in problems. My original post was not to advocate staying logged in forever, but a pithy comment on grid stability. I get like that sometimes. By the way, I am also a North Coast CA girl. ![]() _____________________

I can log 2 or 3 AV's in at once when I want, from Australia, state of some peoples connections & computers is more likely. the other 34,000 people and bots seem to be online just fine, maybe it's just a hundred or so people. _____________________

Lindens! Please fix this bug, I want to continue camping for lindens! I can't do it without this feature! You got it easy, think of the guys with 100 camping bots you are competing with, not being able to even login because latest SL is crashing their pentium 2 and freebie internet link........ Put some petrol in the tank too mate if you want to come for a weekend drive to the coast with us............ _____________________

There are a lot of pessimists concerning the stability of the grid, or don't you follow the forums on a regular basis? More likely the few pessimists do a lot of comlaining, you considered how many people/bots are online and not having problems? Why is it some people here have had continual non-stop problems for 9 months whining daily that "SL is offline" and others only randomly or none at all? How many years can someone keep saying "nothing wrong with this computer it ran SL fine in 2005", "I'm not changing ISP's this one is free"....... _____________________
