$54 million, to be exact. He lost. The presiding judge (not the suing one) dismissed his suit with prejudice, ordered the plaintiff to pay all court costs and the defendants' legal bills. LL sholuld take note of that outcome.

Usually you try to sue the pants OFF someone...........

I mean, do you do it in the road? Do you conduct your critical business strategy meetings in your competitor's office? Do you set out in public your exact opinions of people who have any sort of power over you, like professors, work supervisors, superior military officers, or even local cops, where they can read them at will? Do you post your whereabouts and the whereabouts of things you own on public bulletin boards where random criminals or psychos can find them and track you down? Do your post the whereabouts and intimate habits of yourself and your wife/girl friend/sister/mother in public places where stalkers and weirdos can read them and come after you and those female relatives? If you do, what do those female relatives think about it? Do you want to be in a reality where such disclosures are not only ordinary but universal?

Yes all that is very true, but the context here is taking pictures and somebody reading your chat.
First of all your conversations privacy is always safeguarded by the IM feature for example (you CAN conduct a meeting in the competitions place.. with the IM - ahah!) - and that psycho thing... well... that can be anybody you know - even that cute little girl that you suddenly trust because she just opened her heart to you and oh you want so much privacy with her. oh no, she's a psycho, damn hard on!

Second .. Sex in SL is simulated, and almost everything else is simulated , from the personalities to the overall aspect of the animations. You can "look like" somebody else, heck you can have clones all over!!!
And besides, pictures nowadays are more photoshop than the real thing so you can always say "Oh no that's not me, that's photoshop!"

I admit i like privacy while building for example, and i look for that privacy myself in a sky platform, but i'm not expecting to have it just "because". or demand privacy and say something like i've read a couple of times in these foruns: "limit the ALT feature" - this is quite absurd. but just like people are willing to abide lack of freedom for a false sense of safety, you also have many who are willing to go blind just so nobody sees what they are doing. this is the real psycho-ness IMHO.

I like privacy too. For some things. At some times. Mostly, I don't mind if people wander up to me, or drop in. I love the company. And meeting new people is awesome. One problem though...

I have a beach house on a private sim. Beautiful, and the plots are well spaced away from each other (im me in world, I think there are some left) Anyway, new neighbor pops by, does his hi, hiya, hellos, all nice and polite. Which was great. Then he started dropping by more often. Just to stand there and watch me build. I didn't really mind, because he seemed to chatter AT me, instead of taking my concentration. Flash forward 2 weeks later.... His house is set, he's decorated, he pops over to ask if I want a walk thru. "Sure!"

Apparently he had taken quite a few snapshots as he stood and chatted at me. His living room had 2 picture frames up with snapshots of me doing one of my builds, as well as a viewer that had an add'l handful. It seriously creeped me out.

Ick... I had someting like dat happen to me, too. This person had gotten themselves into our in-world family, then later I visited their house: A whole wall of photos of me, and a room for me, all set up. That was creepy, to say the least.

Linden Labs isnt likely to give US privacy at all, but if they think business is going to use SL as a Virtual Teleconferance system, they will need to Address THAT issue.

Maybe I'm missing something, but if I were a business and I wanted this in SL, I'd just buy an isolated private island and limit access to those involved in the virtual teleconference. That is what the company I work for did.

Some grey in this issue, but really, most of SL is a public place.

Scott on the Canon Digital Photography Forum, back in 2004 poignantly
wrote this:

Legally there is no expectation of privacy in a public place. You can take
pictures as you please. You are only limited by your own sense of what
is proper, your respect for others, and your need to provide for your own
safety. People will generally let you know if they don't want their picture
taken. It's best to honor that or risk geting your a** kicked. Avoid
flash as that's particlarly irritating to people.

(Hey....we need photographic flash in SL!)

I always ask permission to take and use photos before I snap them.

Any of the photos I take could be used to create my erotic entertainment for the web. I have to make sure my playmate is o.k. with that.

You should have an expectation of privacy in the virtual world, and others should respect that privacy.

It's a simple matter for others to invade your privacy.

If others don't respect your privacy, there's not much of anything you can do about it.

Technology is grand, isn't it?

Everyone should at least ask before they take a pic.

Maybe I should date you, Brandi.....at least I'd know when my pic is taken. :D

How about if your taking a picture of a large crowd?

In RL you wouldn't go round and ask a crowd at a concert if you could take a photo, so what about in SL?

No, but if you were to publish it you MAY have to get a release. It's all about context. in a "Public" area (SL Terms) you wouldn't necessarily ask to take a photo. But even with the lack of actual privacy, if you were to photograph people inside a residence, especially engaing in some sort of intimate act without their knowledge, that is just rude, obnoxious and flat out creepy. and even worse if you shared that photo without consent.
