Real life business being ruined by attacks?

Please give me your story. If Second Life's grid attacks have affected your business, let it all hang out! Tell us.

So please let me know your opinion, and feel free to let the fur fly. The only word not allowed is the word 'bashing'. Because to explore topics in depth with honest debate is hardly that. So, if you feel that you cannot enjoy a lively topic, please feel free to chat in the Prayer and Meditation area of the forum:) I'm sure this will be a very instructive thread!

This is not a place for discussion or debate overall, unless it pertains to an actual question about or related to SL itself.

This is not a general discussion forum.

Hi Seola , where do you suggest this be posted?
10-14-2006 11:48
The thread about the Electric Sheep Company's fees went well here. They've discontinued many forum areas. If you could, please give my your suggestion:)

There are no more general discussion forums (unfortunately), so the best place I can think of is a 3rd party forum.

well, we'll try it here to get some resident's answers

Want a great cross section on HOW people best deal with this. And how we can protect our RL businesses in SL.

The resident answers here should be very good, they were great in my last post!

oh, it seems whatever questions I pose today they are great!
10-14-2006 11:57
I do like lively debate, but more so, would like the real, hard answers residents have for all, not just me, on how to deal with grid attacks in reference to their RL business.

The main thing today for me was the cost basis, but wow. It really should have been focused on this issue!

Thankyou, House! You're very supportive! Appreciate this very much :)

I'm just trying to keep this forum good. As I've stated before, I like this forum when it's has productivity. I know is asking A question, but it's not the right one for here. It's a good rule that if you wouldn't post it in LA, then you shouldn't post it here either.

She's basically asking for people to complain. I know it's a good topic and I even have my own story to tell, but I know here isn't the place to do it.

That is not what I've stated I wish here. You seem to wish to be disruptive. but if you wish to add your ideas about how YOUR RL business deals with grid attack issues in SL, pls go ahead!

You didn't ask that though sweetie:

You asked about if had ruined, not how do you deal with it.

Charles Bronson: "I'm just trying to keep this forum good."

You're trying to keep the forum good for who? You?

Charles Bronson: "It's a good rule that if you wouldn't post it in LA, then you shouldn't post it here either."

She didn't want Linden answers. She wanted resident answers!.

Also, seeing as you're so obsessed with control and rules. The Linden Anwers forum is there for residents to ask questions and have them answered by Lindens. So why the hell was you answering a resident's question in Linden Answers? :)

You probably mean well. But you're coming across as a little obsessive lately. Just relax! :)

I'm trying to keep it good as in keep it available as a resource m'dear. And I'm glad you can go through my post history and keep an account. Nice to see you use resources available to you. And obviously, you missed the mark on Resident and Linden answers, Resident answers is a place to ask the questions where you'd get a better response, quicker response, and more responses than posting in LA alone, not to use it as a general discussion forum to post whatever.

It's to help them as well as us.

As for the question of how to deal with it:

There is no way but to accept it. We can't force them to do anything about what's going on because of a cleverly devised ToS. The bigger companies out there will take a huge hit, and I hope in their case they have a backup plan for income if they've solely based it on SL or have some sort of backup money.

While my business is hobby, I do make decent money from it, and I have noticed sales down (more so because people can't buy).

in answer to your question Tina.........

Yes my business is sorely affected, 90% of our rentals occur on the weekends, so id say this day off line has taken at least 45% of our weekly income, you can bet yer ass im not happy

Not good for the larger business then!
10-14-2006 12:39
SO since it may be a percent loss type of thing, it does stand to reason that the larger companies would lose more.

But I really think that even though the TOS doesn't allow compensation for downtime, that a remedy is still in the making!

House, I'm not too sure about Paris, myself:)

OK, so it's affected
10-14-2006 12:42
What do you plan to do about it? Give your own customers a rebate so they stay with you, perhaps? Tell people who are new that this sort of thing can happen and that you do offer such a rebate?

Perhaps even hold discussions to allow people to vent a bit to gain peace and perhaps more of a dialogue to deter future griefing?

Right now, if they are losing so much without the grid being up, offering sales and rebates for sole dependent owners is losing even more money. The ones who take the biggest hits are the ones who can't afford it the most.

Not long ago i felt compelled to insert this into our pre rental information:

"we assume no responsibility for the instability of Second Life, and hence no refunds for lost rental time during grid downtime can be offered"

Yes, it'd be hard to start the rebates
10-14-2006 12:54
But might be a good business move in the long run. Businesses really don't make money for a while. But I was wondering if there is a lag time between startup of a RL business and profitability in SL.

IF there is, then profitabilitiy wont be the issue at the moment at any rate. I'm seeking more long-term solution ideas than short-term. And long term policies may take a while to see their best outcome, financially as well.

Well, House, at Seola's next open house party, I bet she invites you over with that video in tow:) Not too sure where she'll place the video though heheheh

Well, Cinda
10-14-2006 12:58
That seems to follow the TOS, then. Do you feel that in the long run that's a good idea? And, an aside, do you feel that your RL business will 'grow' despite these and perhaps future grid attacks and other issues which interrupt service?

Well, not satisfied, but want to know how you managed it.
10-14-2006 13:00
And if you've suggestions for less fortunate RL business owners in SL. Thankyou :)
