I stopped playing WoW when it ate 3 months of my life. Whole months. Wake up, eat, play WoW, stuff some hygiene in there somewhere (I wasn't one of those disgusting people who never showered, thank god). After 3 months I stopped, looked back, and realized that I had done nothing constructive with that time. As far as bettering myself, it was a blank slate. So I canceled my account.
I have the same thing here (slightly less obsession, I do other things with my time too, now), but I get the benefit of actually learning skills I might be able to use outside the game, such as 3d modeling, texture creation, sound editing, and it never hurts to learn another language (LSL). So while the addiction's the same, the benefits are greater IMO. |

I filed for an extension on my taxes because I would rather be in Second Life than rooting through my paperwork.
The only defense I can offer is that I almost always file for an extension because I'd rather eat barbed wire than do my taxes. Second Life is just a whole lot easier on my teeth. _____________________

I KNOW I can stop anytime I want, because I do it several times a day. Every day. For months now...[interrupted by convulsive twitching]...

I was starting to wonder if Second life is becoming my 'first life'....lol
In real life, I look at a pair of shoes and wonder "Can I get those in Black?" only I am not thinking of that for my RL self........... I also am getting annoyed at those little RL things that pull you away from SL......like sleep! I can only imagine that after a while the 'newness' wares off and you start to interact with RL again.... _____________________

When I was searching for trees for my land (in SL, of course), whenever I came across a nice tree in RL I had the urge to right click on it to see who made it and how many prims it was.
Nope, not addicted. But thoroughly enjoying and RL won't let me get THAT obsessed... but I do see SL in RL everywhere now. _____________________

I really mean to logout of SL and do my housework someday. My RL apartment has become a disaster. All four of my SL residences are tastefully decorated and in pristine shape. Yes, I can stop anytime I want to... next year.

For a period of time, I played an online roleplaying game so much that it affected real world responsibilities. For me, though, it's not the game that was addictive; I had other problems that caused me to seek an escape from reality, and online games happened to be an available outlet. Since addressing the other problems, I have not spent unreasonably long periods of time online. In fact, even when I have the available time, it's difficult for me to want to stay in SL for more than a couple of hours at a time. Something in my brain has limited tolerance of virtual reality.

Since I live in SL, I can't be addicted to it, can I? But I've spoken to the RL agent who sent me here and they admit to having been addicted at times, but claim it has only eaten into time they would have spent doing other things on their computer.
I find living in SL is better than RL in some ways and worse in others. Food is much easier to find in RL, for instance. |

I spend a fair amount of time in SL--on the average about 3-4 hours a day, more if there is a major event going on, less if I have something I'd rather do in RL. And my work allows me to pop in from time to time, so add an hour or two there.
Is this addiction? Well, most of my time is spent in one of two pastimes--making things via graphics programs or chatting with people I genuinely consider friends. And what on earth is wrong with that? (yes, I have RL friends. A fair number in fact. But that doesn't make my SL friends less so). I don't watch TV or many movies, I don't play other videogames or surf the web much, so I don't think I spend more time in front of a video screen recreationally than most. SL is a hobby. A good one, I feel. It actually even gives me a bit of pin money. And there is the potential for more than just play and chat. I've helped put up educational displays, and an online museum. Recently, my sim has been working towards raising money for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. I see little wrong with SL, and much positive. It's like RL. You can waste your time you have, or you can be productive. But you have to decide what productive means to you. |

I chose "No, but i play it everyday"
Im on often, usually making things and such. but theres definitely other things to do. I wouldnt "cry" if it disappeared. It would be unfortunate because SL is a very good outlet for design, but I could live without it. |

Among addictions there are others that are far worse.
Just as in real life it is what you make it. _____________________

OK, who here is addicted to RL? Do you find you just can't stop? Every day, you have this compulsion to wake up, get out of bed, do stuff ...
SL is a way of breaking that addiction. |

I am not addicted to sl , but i do use sl every day, I love this game, for i can build my virtual home to show my some work on computer technologies, and my father and wife's artwork. I possiblely provide tech support or training via sl, it will be very interesting.

It's only an addiction if it interferes with the other things you need to do to be happy and take care of yourself. Or if you suffer withdrawal symptoms when it's missing a day.
