..does it show I hate mainland? hehe

It does... While I am very happy on the mainland and would never consider to rent. Too many spooky stories about sim-owners that "misbehave"... and no, I don't say all sim-owner who rent land are bad people. Far from that.... but the stories have been here on this former and other forums. So they are out there.

I rather keep thing in my own hand.

As for lag, it is not an issue on the sim where I have my land. Plus to that I have a good connection and a very nice computer (don't underastimate the influence of those two things on lag).

Griefers? I haven't had a real griefer on my land (I own the spot more then a year now and it has only grown). The people that annoyed me somehow on my land I can count on the fingers of one hand.

Hi,

I have some land in Dimidiata and a tiny bit in Benham. I've got more than one house, depending on the mood I am in, I have an Irish Cottage, a Gorean Tower, and a Modern skybox. I also rent in a Gorean village. Each of these has their own purpose depending on what I am doing and who I'm entertaining. I use my skybox a lot for changing and building, for example, and to get away from the mood of roleplay.

The best thing about owning on the mainland is the total control and the chance to build your own. As long as you're paid up, the Lindens are very consistent. The worst thing is the risk of ugly neighbors.

If you can, get a chance to look at the evolutionary history of the mainland, or get a midbie or oldbie to explain it to you. The older the mainland sim, the more stable and expensive it is. There is always the risk of what amounts to visual spam, however, and parts of even the older mainland have gotten ugly lately. I build on the ground for looks and in the air for privacy and function, so I always have at least two builds on any lot, and usually some "prim land" in the same sim to give me enough prims to do this. I once had three builds on the same 512, a ground house and two skyboxes 300 m apart, with prim land elsewhere on the sim.

Another possibility that people overlook is going underwater. There's an art display at the bottom of the reservoir in Barton where I once had a Mermaid Tavern. You could have a boat at the surface and a hideout at the bottom, and a skybox high above both!

Right now I am very lucky to be on the west side of Dimidiata, sandwiched in between a close friend, a nice mall owner who has a good looking park on the ground, and the ever friendly Dr. Who club, plus a radio station. Except for the northeast corner, Dimidiata's gotten pretty stable finally. That's the sweet spot for buying mainland, before it gets SO stable that the landowners will pay just about anything for land in a sim to get those precious prims.

It's also important to cut a deal with yourself about tier. I'm currently enjoying all this for 15 a month in tier plus a tiny amount of rent. I made a commitment to myself once never to go over 25, which I have kept. I don't "get" the need some people have for massive huge empty builds that are only homes. If you have a good eye for decor and attractive neighbors, you can live quite well on smaller lots.

Have fun!

:D

Hi All

Morwen and Bilbo99 - I tried to catch you online last night but I must have missed you both :( sorry!

Well I went and viewd around 6 different sims and my head was buzzing at the end of it!!

I really am in a bit of a quandry as to where to go although I am swaying to one particular sim, the parcel on it is approx 3904 sq and $24 per month with 893 prims - is this reasonable??

hi there, good luck with your first steps on the land market :-)

I myself am a very happy owner of a 4k plot on a private estate with covenant, and I think that's quite safe when you go with a respectable landlord... In fact this is cheaper for me the going premium and paying tier for a 4k...

The land I have is from the otherland estate, http://www.otherland-group.com/
Very helpfull people, and I can recommend them!

IM me in case you're interested to come take a peek or want some extra info, i'm usually online from 20 - 23 CET

I'd highly recommend mainland rent for a first 'investment'. You won't have to pay any initial 'purchase price', you won't have to commit to anything with LL, and while the lack of control does mean you could end up with a club or casino as a neighbor overnight it will also give you the freedom to try a couple of different things with your home before you decide exactly what it is you want to do with it-and then when you are ready to buy mainland or buy/rent private you can aim for something which you know suits your tastes :)

If you would like to try mainland rental, drop me an IM in-world and I can show you a spot with a very reasonable landlord and decent performance :)
