It does make me think of how dependent SL is on SoCal's lousy power supply. Is this the future for SL? Brought down by lack of electricity?

They need to move their server farm to someplace with secure power...soon. This is the second time in a month that San Fran seems to have problems.

San Francisco in SoCal?!!

You did NOT just call me a Southern California girl! Dnali, them's fightin words!

:p

My sister actually knew someone in Santa Barbara who thought they were in northern California.

I've always considered the southern extent of the coastal redwoods to be the border, but I guess you could also judge by the waiters in your local restaurant. If they aren't trying to give you their script or headshot, then it's probably northern California. ;)

is there any kind of outline as to what is consider temporary?
over an hour ago they posted on the blog that logins were closed "temporarily"

I do not like this timeframe so far :(

lost time lost sales and GRRR I know not their fault but I want to get back in, got some ideas to try! GRR GRR and GRRRRR

Temporary means "Not Permanant" meaning it WILL reopen, but they are Not sure When. The word it's self does not attempt to convey a time frame beyond the ensuring the Log-ins Will Open. Could be an Hour, a Day, Or a week, but it will be some time.

Course the best solution is to have the vital infrastructure in the UK.

Whilst SF seems to produce power outages regularly UK can maintain power even when the substation is practically underwater.

For those who don't know, huge swathes of the UK are currently underwater, 1000's of homes flooded, but only 48,000 out of power (for a short period of time), and a sub station feeding 500,000 was saved despite being under the flood water level ( came withing 2 inches of flooding over the emergancy defences ).

I bet the whole power failure was caused by some PG & E employee spilling Pepsi on a console. :D

I am aware of the meaning of temporary, I was merely venting like many many others do on the forums

thanks for the info just the same though

I think it was a bad storm that caused the power outages, sometimes it happens. Of course there is no excuse for the colo they use to not be able to provide power during the outage.

The ideal colo would be in located Mclean, VA, USA. SF is the other part of the country, plus maybe NY that has central backbones all connected. Colo's in the UK and the DS3's would probably be cost prohibitive for LL.

There at times when SL goes down for maintence. This is generally a 3-4 hour deal, sometimes less, sometimes more. It's totally unavoidable.. SL is supported by machines, and these machines need to be maintained.. both hardware and software. Generally this only happens once or twice a month, and runs (generally) from 7 am to noon pst. You can't "get back in" through some exploit, as logins are completely disabled for everyone except those with a Linden account, and, at that, it's generally only a few techie Lindens, or no one at all (the whole system is taken down).

Nope, no storm, it was warm and sunny in the Bay Area today. Perhaps a little foggy in the city at times, but that's not unusual for San Francisco.

I'm actually surprised that a power outage took out a colocation facility. I live in London and my brother ran a small telephony / VOIP company (since been bought up as a result of another company's expansion plans) which had its' switches and hardware set up at the TeleCity colo in Canary Wharf. We're not too likely to be hit any major disaster here but they have a massive diesel generator parked out the back of the building (in its' own purpose-built shed) just in case there's any glitches in the mains power supply. I thought that having adequate backup power was part of the remit for a colo facility (aside from the security).

One solution would be for LL to buy it's own wind / solar / nuclear(!) power station and move the colo facilies there. Bomb-proof power FTW!!!

LMAO at the thought of LL with their own nuclear plant.... "And next wednesdays software update should sort out our power problems, all being well we'll be back online after six hours !! " :P

Regarding the UK, actually probably wouldn't be as they have a UK development office so some of their infrastructure is here already.

Storms... have you SEEN the floods in the UK? UK has had months of bad rain/storms and lost power.. ONCE.. to a town that is now an island and about 2/3 it's normal size.

Agree, any serious facility like this should have a backup generator. Might not be law but it's common sense, as it locating it in a region that doesn't have a flakey power grid.
