It does make me think of how dependent SL is on SoCal's lousy power supply. Is this the future for SL? Brought down by lack of electricity?

They need to move their server farm to someplace with secure power...soon. This is the second time in a month that San Fran seems to have problems.

*sigh* well I am not losing business cuz business sucked anyway

but others are losing my business cuz I still shop...

GRRR I assume "temporarily" is about as long as that piece of string right?

may as well go play some wow

The grid will be back up the second after you give up and stop trying :p.

*wonders if one/some of the asset servers lost power and couldn't shut down cleanly*

One solution would be for LL to buy it's own wind / solar / nuclear(!) power station and move the colo facilies there. Bomb-proof power FTW!!!

Oh how I wish they would have made that announcement an hour or so earlier.

I had spent way too much at a shop a few hours earlier and nothing...I mean not a single item showed up in my inventory.

*sigh*

/me is just hoping the items are sitting out in the vastness of cyber space waiting patiently to come home to her inventory

Even Google is moving their server farm to the Omaha, Nebraska area because of the bandwidth available due to the Air Force Base. Perhaps SL could follow suit and do it before it becomes a band wagon situation. Only thing to fear in Nebraska is a tornado or two. lol

Ok solution to Problem
07-24-2007 17:18
Therre is a simple solution LL open offices in more then one city and have enough servers to cover this. I am losing money like there is no tomarrow. But LL does not care as usual. They just worry about how many residents and the stupid voice system. And if you think about the voice coming to game u are now going to hurt people who cant talk, are from multiply countries and those who cant hear. LL fix what the known issues are then worry about adding stuff. Christ I have not seen color in game since 1.15 and they dont care. Call the main office and get the operator and she hung up on me. Nice LL i would file a complaint with the BBB id SF but u all not a member. Go figure.

"Termporarily."

We live in an "interglacial" period, which is a geological term. This interglacial period has lasted approximately 10,000 years so far. Geologists regard it as "temporary."

This outage will last until the geniuses running San Francisco figure out how to turn the power back on.

I love San Francisco, BUT:

Don't hold your breath.

I need my Second Life more than I need the First!

Temporarily means until Pacific Gas & Electric can restore power since it seems like Linden Labs does not have an adequate UPS system in San Francisco to maintain operations during a power outage. While it may not be a sound business decision given the historical problems California has had with power outages they seem to be in good company with several other tech/online based companies such as Six Apart, Technorati, and Craigslist that apparently either neglected their infrastructure in a similar manner or assumed the risk so that they could reserve or otherwise allocate resources to other aspects of operations.

For all those naysayers that say the only purpose of a UPS system is to safely shut down the system you're engaging in a convenient fiction. It is more accurate to say that many companies that have a UPS system have only set it up for that purpose, but the current UPS technology available can maintain operations for systems indefinitely provided that a company is willing to lay out the expense.
