Getting some kind of job that does not require to many skills is probably a better route to go than gambling.
Gambling is o.k. if you are gambling for fun, but if you are counting on a payoff it's kind of counter productive in my opinion.
I tend to agree with all that said just buy 10 or 20 US$ worth to start out. It's not that big of an investment.

This is not a plug (no. Honest it's not).
There are places that have free competitions with cash prizes. Bowling Bandits have regular 10 pin bowling competitions, sponsored by Redux Technologies and Castles in the Sky, which have prizes that always include cash to beginners.

best in contest? i run them and find that the newbies get voted to win if they are outgoing enough to talk to the other patrons compliment and have a good time.
the first 2 months I was in SL I did buy 1000L and enough to buy land (first land remember that ?) but made over 10,000L in best in wings (using free wings) best in crazy clothes (making insane outfits) and best in leather (freebie pants ) as well as the other newbie I was exploring and playing with. a team effort so to speak she was cute (even as here freebie newbie skin and little goth pony tails) and very out going as well as I we had fun and won!
We started at a free Linden free play small casino with coin hunts and free play and raffles, that is now over crowded with dance pads and click to pay web stuff, but another option.
I do believe in "certain brands" of sploders mine NEVER pays less than the initial 5 but will pay less if you pay 10 or 200L in. I can only set to pull 10% max as owner, and I guess it always pays out at least what your 5L in was because someone will up it if not the owner almost always someone pays 20 50L to it.
hosting is another option, I offer at my $ tree jobs, only 1 taker so far, 200L +tips to host sl AM events for 2 hours, basically chat and run the best in contest (making them up) and having a good time making friends , getting people to play the sploder, (so I recover -50% instead of -80% lol yeah thats recover negative clubs are money pits ! lol

Issue is even if you do already or some how can acquire skills really fast its still hard to get noticed or even get people to buy your product. Even if you do have talent the learning curve and information you need to know is so steep it becomes overwhelming and leads to burn out. Camping isn't fun but it helps when you can't for whatever reason buy Linden. The real question should be is where do you go to actually met people to hang out with and have fun if you're not interested in shopping or making content? If people focused more on pleasant places and things to do then business, and provide places for new players had actual things to do and people to hang out with that didn't require Lindens there might be more people sticking around. But I seriously doubt anyone or very few would do that. Also the very new who sign up but don't stick around often is become of their computers and not people able to move around. There isn't much to do about this one though. I wish it was possible to fix, then maybe more of my real life friends would come to SL

Some clubs have 'sploders that when they trigger, they do a large winner, several smaller winners, and a bunch of random minor prizes for anyone nearby. That kind, you need to pay to get the big prize, but the 'chaff' of free money for anyone in the area can go to people who have not entered the raffle at all. Best bet on any sort of "money ball" is to go to a club that is having an event - where the club owner is likely seeding the ball with funds to increase payouts and crowd excitement. Also, go to clubs where they have a 'sploder or money ball active, but don't have a lot of actual guests present. Better odds with fewer participants. The best starting skill for a newbie to learn is making t-shirts. They are easy to make, are usually decent sellers for a while after you make one, and are a good introduction to making clothes and working with textures in SL.

From: Alderic LeShelle I'd advise against any sort of gambling as a means to make money. Only a minority of 'sploders pay back your minimum bet, most of them go below. And with a sploder paying back L$2 where you had enter L$10 you would easily lose your hard-earned money. Sometimes you MAY hit the jackpot, but in the long run you WILL lose, especially with slot machines and if the club owner or the event host doesn't pump lots of money into the game of chance.
Camping chairs as a safe, reliable way to make money come to my mind. Yes, many people may scoff at them, but sitting on a chair or using a dance pad doesn't require you to be idle... sorting the inventory, IMing or chatting comes to my mind as reasonable activities that don't require moving around.
Other than that, going beyond some starting money to upload some textures or animations... There's no way around picking up a trade. Well will camping chairs still be here when they change traffic and search? If they disappear we wil all have to pitch in to help newbies more... Although I agree that camping is the best way for a newbie to make money tell them to also look to money trees. And as simple as it sounds search for nice freebies and lucky chairs... you can actually get a lot of very nice clothes and hair and other things to use in the game that way for free so many of your in game wants can be met... From: Nimue Galatea I'm compiling a list of things a newbie can do to get some of those much needed lindens as soon as they get off Newbie Island. I already have SLprofiles Vault down, as well as SLexchange referral, and money trees. Please add to this list, I beg you. Anything a newbie can do that is relatively easy is good. Thanks much i can't help with making L$ besides camping or creating an item for sale and renting a store.... but on the other end, it would be nice to compile a list of stores that sell stuff cheap... from $1L-$20L for example, so they can quickly get out of that newbie look. i have such a store, as do many others. make that list too.
