I'm compiling a list of things a newbie can do to get some of those much needed lindens as soon as they get off Newbie Island.

I already have SLprofiles Vault down, as well as SLexchange referral, and money trees.

Please add to this list, I beg you.

Anything a newbie can do that is relatively easy is good.

Thanks much :)

The best way a new player can earn money is to get skills.
I recommend taking one of the many classes offered in world, as well as watching Torley Linden’s videos on Youtube.com.
Without skills there is not much more than camping, working as a customer service rep for a club or store or maybe escorting as a last resort and even that requires skill.

Guys, I DON'T MEAN skills and etc.

Just something to help them get on their feet after they arrive.

After that they should learn skills, of course.

But meanwhile....

Visit money trees first. Then search for clubs that have sploders. Go to the club with maybe 20 lindens in your account and play the game. Never put more than the minimum in (usually 5 lindens) wait the 300 seconds and play again. You seldom get less than you put in if you stay at 5 lindens. Over time you can come out ahead. And if you find a lively group that are friendly chat it up.........get people to like you. You will have fun and so will everyone else. And then when they have events, enter...you could win!! :)

Admittedly, I didn't start out flat out broke like the newbies coming in now but I built my account up to over 20,000 lindens over a span of maybe 2 months that way. I believe I started out with my weekly stipend of 500 and with the winnings off the sploders and a couple event wins I bought some nice clothes and skins and all the stuff everyone needs to survive..........and still got my account to over 20,000!!

Now I just spend.................LOL

Thank you Peggy - that is valuable info :) I had no idea sploders were worth investing lindens in.

Another place for newbies to get some L$ and have fun/learn at the same time are some of the in-world games that pay some L$ as prizes.

Two such games are:
- Tringo
- Primtionary

I'd advise against any sort of gambling as a means to make money. Only a minority of 'sploders pay back your minimum bet, most of them go below. And with a sploder paying back L$2 where you had enter L$10 you would easily lose your hard-earned money. Sometimes you MAY hit the jackpot, but in the long run you WILL lose, especially with slot machines and if the club owner or the event host doesn't pump lots of money into the game of chance.

Camping chairs as a safe, reliable way to make money come to my mind. Yes, many people may scoff at them, but sitting on a chair or using a dance pad doesn't require you to be idle... sorting the inventory, IMing or chatting comes to my mind as reasonable activities that don't require moving around.

Other than that, going beyond some starting money to upload some textures or animations... There's no way around picking up a trade.

Also, gambling is unregulated, and with an LSL scripted object you have no idea what the house take is in any one case.

Camping works, but probably costs you more in electricity leaving your PC on. Using your credit card is a better way of getting started. Certainly if you want to buy anything substantial.

It's a shame there aren't more earning trades (other than prostitution). I don't see why one shouldn't be able to offer more inworld services. Private detective would be fun - take a job tailing someone's partner to check their faithfulness ...

Learn a skill? Even assuming newbies take the time to read these boards, what's the payoff on leaning a skill, timewise? With a month of hard work learning the skill you might come up with a product, and it might sell and you might make some money?

A newbie has to get out in SL and explore in order to have any chance to have a clue what kind of product might sell, or how to market or sell it.

Sploders? I have seen sploders take all the money a few times, and be the big winner often keeping the money. You are better off playing blackjack.

Escorting? LOL! You need to put 6000L into your avi before you can dream about making a nickle as an escort.

I think I may have made 40 or 50 cents off my SLEx referball. It says in big letters right on the top of the screen people get when they click the referball, "Sign up ingame at an ATM instead of this way- it's way easier." Most people are going to do that.

As an escort, I get alot of newbies who want to make money quick, and I have some interest in helping them. I think there is no better way for newbies to make money than Hippie Pay. This is only true for US residents, however.

I researched about SL before I came here, and it seemed HPay was a good way to make some quick money. I'm not saying people should fall for the whole HPay scam, but I am saying there is no better or quicker way for a newbie to make 500L's than Hippie Pay. I think even the dumbest person should be able to clear the easy offers in 2 hours.

The deals on HPay change all the time. Another problem is that you don't figure out what deals are ripoffs until you do them. So going in blind, with no assistance, a newbie could waste 4-6 hours trying to make the most money.

This week, completing the best deals on HPay is worth about 800L. HPay is all about generating spam and consumer information. If you make a freemail account and don't use it for anything else but HPay, you scam the spammers. If you don't use real data, you screw the data minors. It's almost like guerrilla consumerism.

I am not going to put the details of how to get the most from HPay on an open forum, for reasons that should be obvious. But I will post some general guidelines.

Don't fill out offers that offer you free stuff. You have to buy something with a charge card to win those xboxes and laptops. But you can fill out the ones that offer you a "chance to win". Those are like raffles, and most of them pay for basic info. The survey companies pay consistently, except the first one. You will never get offered premium surveys. The key element is to check your email and reply to the verification email as soon as it comes, rather than continue filling out screens you don't have to fill out.

If you wan't to email me $1 in paypal, I will email you exactly which HPay deals actually paid out this week. (gianniarossini@yahoo.com).

People that pay the $1 and use my HPay machine, I will also split my comission from HPay money with them, and they can make an additional 25% of every payment, in kickback from me. (http://slurl.com/secondlife/VoronezhIrkutsk/105/112/99/)

So that means a newbie can make 1000L, worth about $3.50. It might take 3-4 hours without my guide, but for a $1, I can tell you how to cut that time down to about an hour.

Or they could just spend $20 or ever $10 and have enough L$ to get them their initial purchases, if someone isn't willing to do that they're just not worth your time.

If you convince a newbie that they should spend their first time in SL doing nothing but hunt for a few measily L$ here and there, they're not going to be terribly impressed with SL. Instead of exploring, socializing or learning they'll be filling out forms, idling in camping chairs and otherwise being a worthless zombie addition to SL.

Agreed

Secondlife is free to join. Can you say that about most computer games? They usually cost $50-60 US
(sorry, I hate to use the term "game" ...SL is hardly that)

Spend $8 US and buy 2000 lindens. Then go enjoy Secondlife instead of locking yourself to a camping chair for a couple of weeks (for the same amount of money)

Or spend more and REALLY have fun fast.

I have a feeling that is exactly why my roomie Nimue is trying to compile a list of better ways. Too many newbies fall in to the trap of feeling like they have to camp forever just to make enough $L's to not look like a stupid newb. I almost fell in to the same trap... thankfully someone I met convinced me to spend $10USD and after that advice I was far happier.

We can probably all agree on this.... but newbies aren't being given that instruction when they enter the world. I went from signing up, going through the entry islands and in to the SL landscape without ever knowing how I was going to get $L's.

Between freebies and lucky chairs, there are a lot of things available to newbies. What newbies need really is not a list of where to make a few Lindens here or there, but a guide to finding the true freebies and avoiding the scams.

Camping is not fun. But with a dance pad that lets you stay on a while, and an orb of anti-idle, your avatar can be earning money while you sleep. (Of course, camping will only remain a viable service industry as long as searches are ranked based on traffic.)

My first week I wandered around a bit...found some of those dance pads and tried it for about 10 minutes....oOoo...3 lindens...
mosy'ed over to some sort of gambling thing and used 10 lindens to make 5 lindens...ooOoo
Most of the time just checking things out...noticing the cool avatars and noting the prices to get that look.

then I got smart and moved my cursor up to the top right of my screen...Heyy...hmm..."buy" lindens?....eggsellent!!

The fact that you "Can earn real money in Second Life"

Often over-shadows the fact that the real money comes from other residents.

People need to lose the idea they wont spend ANY US$ on a "video game". Otherwise the system doesnt really work.

If they dont want to spend ANY US$ at all. they will need to get a SL job. Doing something thats worth money to their employer.

Getting those Lindens
06-22-2007 09:42
I've been known to hand out money...500L to the last girl I met who wanted a new dress! I've also given money to those cleaning floors and things..

I tried them but I don't want to waste my valuable time not being able to enjoy SL..so I ponied up the money...for the price of a couple of videos a month I now have a GRAND time!

What I liked when I first started was the money trees. It got me to go out and explore several different areas of SL and I was also able to meet many of the owners. That's why I have 2 of them now.

One big thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is freeplay gambling machines. There are many places that offer some low stakes machines for free. Especially slingo machines. There's a ton of freeplay machines out there that pay out lindens. There's even some multiplayer games that have freeplay.

Assuming the newbs have a halfway decent skin and some prim hair, they could work as a "live model" mannequin. That requires an initial investment on a skin, though.
