From: Rhaorth Antonelli open source
wonder what that would do for gambling, ppl hosting a server would I am sure host gambling related things, how would LL keep a handle on that
sure ppl can "agree" to a license thing, but how many really would LOL
and I too have yet to meet Philip, either or out of world BLAH one day! My wild guess is the Lindens will not allow Linden$ payments to open sourced land / sites that provide gambling somehow. That way Credit Card companies wont cancel payments to Linden Labs for violating the gambling policy. So I imagine someone will have to make a way to take alternative virtual or real currency to host gambling in their 3rd party SL land casino place.

LL's last publicised injection of venture capital was March 2006, and they just bought a pile of technology and are hiring. Ergo, Philip Rosedale may be on the road closing another round of funding.
Also, I'm sure he is already wealthy enough from RealNetworks, but he won't be making any huge amount of money from LL until they reach endgame -- acquisition or (imho more likely) going public. Tho they certainly are well-positioned for acquisition as well.
Personally I wouldn't open source the servers until after endgame -- I would selectively license the code, but that's all -- but LL knows their business a LOT better than I do, lol.

From: Broccoli Curry I haven't seen, or heard, a squeak from Philip Linden for absolutely ages now. Am I just missing things, or is he MIA?
Just curious.
Broccoli I think he went THERE.

*grins* lol Play Dough mebe. ------ Actually when the idea of open source servers first was talked about that I remember (2 years ago. ) Many speculated that when servers go open source the Linden would switch Second Life over to a US dollar economy. You would have an account like paypal where you just purchase things from the various places directly without the Lindens having a stake. Of course this was before they co-opted and stole the GOM idea to make LindenX.

My guess - When you're a defendant in a lawsuit where much of the complaint centers around things you've stated in public, you operate under the advice of your attorney, and you do fewer public appearances/keynotes/speeches until the dust settles.
It's disappointing, as Philip's engagement with the public has always been something I've greatly admired about him.
