I haven't seen, or heard, a squeak from Philip Linden for absolutely ages now. Am I just missing things, or is he MIA?

Just curious.

Oh ok, so nothing really actually relating to Second Life in the slightest, and the job we're paying him to do... figures.

All this talk of open sourcing the servers ASAP must surely worry all land barons out there.

I still remain opposed to 'open source'... it won't be the saviour of Second Life, it'll be the death of it.

The beauty of an Open Source Server client is just.... beautiful!!

Folks with programming knowledge can now add in fun stuff- like lil' bits of code to see & take L$, spyware, etc. You'd have a nice private connection to someone's virus & spyware filled computer. :)

Not sure how much I trust someone to literally be ON their computer, sitting in their house in who knows what country.

Plus- does everyone have enough bandwidth to support everybody coming onto their system? Do you have a computer to handle it?

I DO see a use of it for being able to work & experiment "offline".

I can see me making a private offline sim or five just to play building in, and occasionally invite people over to see - but much of what you say is likely to happen, and worse, if LL don't keep very close reins on it all.

Given their experience with simple things like protecting a credit card database ... I shall probably hold no money whatsoever in SL after that point.

Not me.

Of course, I rent space on a cheap server to host my website. I expect when SL server software goes open source, tier will drop as various server providers compete with LL. Some sims then will be slow and kludgy, but others will be _very_ fast.

He's finally made enough RL money to buy a RL island and now he's shopping. Even
Philip knows that the lag issue is better in RL than in SL (as is the weed). lol

wonder what that would do for gambling, ppl hosting a server would I am sure host gambling related things, how would LL keep a handle on that

Well assuming the open source sim's could connect to the grid, you'd still have to go by LL policy and if ya dont, they could just disconnect you pretty simply. I doubt it'll be just a "connect to our grid!" type deal. I'm sure you would have to provide some sort of payment, asurances on speeds etc etc. (By that I mean hosted at a datacenter not a home computer)

Course if you host your own, not connected to the main grid at all, its yours to do with as you please :p

I've been wondering dat for a while. I su'pect a lot of the day to day stuff is being handled by Robin, and he's serving more as corporate spokesman nowadays.

Re: Philips comments on open sourcing the grid.

Those statements sound more like "promises promises" than anything else. They said they would 6 months ago and now they are continuing to just to not get branded a liar.

Frankly, the best part about them opening the server will be the ability for people to be 1-2 years closer to creating grids COMPLETELY INDEPENDANT of SL in ANY WAY. The asset/login and other grid support services are technically rather simple if you are not trying to host 50,000 users at once. The server will be the last hard part of the puzzle and once the client and server are available... goodbye LL!

A HUGE number of people could care LESS about connecting to the LL grid, they want THEIR OWN GRIDS, and handing out the server will be pretty close to handing out your own private SLs.

The fact is, most people I know spend an awful lot of time in an awful small number of sims. Being able to explore a vast virtual universe is nice.. but in reality most people seem to want to just build and socialise with their circle of friends over a vastly smaller area of the grid. I think the 100 sim mini grid idea is going to go over quite well.

I think LL surely must realise this, I sure wouldn't be handing out the family jewels that easily if I were them. Though because the client is already open sourced, people are already working on a sim clone and in about 2 years, maybe less, it will make no difference anyway, they might as well hand it out THEN.

I'm on both sides here. I think it would be stupid of them to do it now and potentially lose even more of the population at such an early stage in growth, but I sure hope they do! :)

Heh. They are handing out the family jewels so that the customer base won't want to kick them in them so often...

Well,
I used to host game servers for games like Operation Flashpoint, SWAT and VBS1. VBS2 server is now on the way but I wont even go there and bore you with the details on VBS. I also used to host voice servers (teamspeak) and do webhosting.

Since I signed with SL I'm kinda hoping for the server code to be made available. As some said before, this will change sim prices and tier costs by a lot but it will also allow people to create larger connected regions that are very well designed on high-end servers.

I can't see the problem in fraudulent actions if the actual transactions and other things will go through LL servers. And I'm sure LL will do soemthing like this to (A) keep some business and (B) prevent illegal actions and fraud.

So yeah, amke the server code available but fix some bugs in viewer and server first... and nvm voice, we got that already :-p

So P.L. dissapeared roughly about the same time as the new "gambling policy" is announced...

Perhaps he is somewhere saying hello to Luca Brasi?
