If it was really a 'protected' waterway all of it would be Linden property. If people own most of the water privately, then its not 'protected waterway,' Dana, so get the definition right.

Its alright Tiberious- I have autoreturn. I'm talking about if SL screws up and you don't get it back.

I remember being a newbie. I also remember I always respected people's land and privacy.

Between 200m and 700m is clear. Use that, and be glad I gave you some passage.

Tell us all oh great sir where it says "waterway" is defined as either 100% protected or 100% private plz. Combinations of the 2 exist all over SL. Also, when i used the words "ALMOST completely block" one would assume it means to make it ALMOST impassable yet pointless to try and navigate it.

Simple. Look at property lines. If the entire waterway is Linden owned - and they often are - then its public. If you see a waterway by a parcel but its border goes iunder the water, that SECTION of water within the border is 100% private. If LL did a bad job on borders, blame them. Its not the landowners fault. You know I could drop the ban in flavor of a 100L toll to pass for 2 minutes.

As someone who's started sailing and flying lately, I can honestly say ban lines and the people who put them up over areas with "reasonable expectation of freedom of movement" suck ass. Nothing like trying to sail in between ban lines down a narrow, zig-zagged 8m wide protected path in the middle of a 60m+ wide river cuz morons on both sides decided it was their "option" to almost completely block a protected waterway.

The people to plame are the Lindens or the sim constructor who didn't leave enough public waterway in the centre, the other possibility I've seen is what starts as a narrow creek is widened by landowners who drop their land levels to extend the water to moor their own boats etc. Either way it their land and their right to do what they want with it, you can always make them an offer for the water part of it then donate it to LL.

Or the best comprimise I can see here for all is those with water land should split the water parcel from the main, prim usage will still be the same but this allows them to leave ban lines up on their residence without putting bans on their water property.

Well, the last time I made an alt, I got through the 4 mandatory lessons and onto the mainland in less than 2 minutes. I didn't have to move more than 30 Meters total before I was done. So I didn't find it very annoying. (I made one and checked all the new stations, and later made a second where I zipped through as fast as I could.)

I was through in around 15 seconds, I just sent a home Landmark from my main char :)

People HAVE to navigate down that thin little Linden strip in the middle because people have done just that... purposely make it nearly impossible to pass. But why tho? Unless their house in right in the water where i could see a need for keeping people back, what's the point of blocking passage on the water? Just to be an ass? or is it an ego power trip thing? An orb could do the job just fine... especially one with a 15-30 second eject warning. I DO blame LL for making many of the protected areas too narrow to use if landowners throw up banlines, but i also blame landowners who KNOW their banlines over river waters act more as a trap and a grievance to passer-bys than anything to do with security. For these types I imagine its quite the source of amusement too.

What fundamentally is the point of ban lines?

We don't have any in Otherlands 40+ sims and everybody is much happier as a result. Sailors can sail wherever they want ( assuming there is sea ) and AVs can fly around wherever they want.

If you don't like somebody ban an individual - not everybody.

to keep persistant and troublesome jackamoles out.

My guess is, a large bunch of us are just plain snobs. We're forgetting that we once were newbies. I have to admit that when I started my life in SL I wasn't aware of property lines, private homes, estates, etc. Hell, there is no SL manual that indicates this. So I did, walk into somebody's home without asking, but not to be rude. Simply because I hadn't been briefed on roles and regulations for land, public or not. I now own several homes in the mainland and PIs. I don't use ban lines because I hate to run into them when I'm flying around in my balloon. Every now and then, I get unexpected visitors dropping into the middle of my builds, and I treat them with respect and courtesy. I answer any questions they may have and then inform them on privacy issues and land ownership. So far, I haven't had to ban anyone, because once they are informed, they simply leave. If I want privacy, I simply tp to my skybox above 700 mts, very hard to find. It's up to us to educate newbies because LL won't do it. I say Bring Down The Walls!

can understand that logic, but we (partner and i) are not snobs. we help as often as we can when we can. however, after renting a spot where the nieghbors brought thier little gang wars, prim garbage, nudity(one kept propositioning our in world daughter for cybersex), being orbited for no reason( when we asked, we were told and i quote" sorry we were bored";)and having random jacka$$es treat it like it was thier private sandbox, we put up the bans lines until my partner got a security orb(something else people are complaining about ::rolleyes:: ) until the sim owner sold it. so, ban lines while ugly have thier place.

never assume because someone has ban lines up its because they are "snobs".

I guess there are people who don't know the mores of the place they have come to yet, and people who don't want to know the mores ever.

We have to try and sort them out if we want SL to grow well.

trespassing is serious business and a federal crime, and then if they still resort to terrorizing me by stepping one foot on my land, I have a script that teleports them home without warning

I can't tell for sure... You *are* kidding, right? I just have to ask, because I would be utterly astonished if anyone *actually* believed you could make a federal offense out of trespassing in SL :)

wow, a ban line thread!!
04-27-2007 18:36
Some folks hate them, and other folks love them! Thats why we have a never ending supply of threads such as this. I like em cus I dont like orbs. The only time you should need an orb is cus your ban lines dont go high enough to secure your build. 100 meters is plenty high for me, it locks down the house but doesnt blow away passing aircraft. I tend to compromise between my own delusional privacy needs and assisting in the abililty of tourists to fly/boat over or past my properties. No, I have no desire to charge somebody 100 bucks to drive by. Im a big fan of mobility, and enjoy travel myself.
