Scripting Rumor about DeeJay Voom

There is a Rumor going around about me in SL, that I have some type of Script that if I give you a gift it will take your money.

1st I would like to say you should never take gifts from strangers.
2nd I do not know how to script like this, so it is not me that has that script.
3rd I do not know who started that rumor or why.

I just know that I have now been banned from a lot of places in SL, and have been receiving loads of nasty IMs, or IMs asking for the script. People please read the above, if you have banned me, please think again about it, I have done nothing but spent my SL life helping people.

If you want the script, please read number 2 above.

If you where the person that started this, I do not know what I did to you, but you have won, you have destroyed my SL life.

I hope people understand not to jump to conclusions when it comes to these things.

I am deeply sorry about this. I have heard countless stories of people destroyed by allegations and rumors in Second Life. To me, the people who spread rumors and take allegations at face value without hearing both sides and looking at the evidence are even worse than the scammers/griefers. The amount of witchhunts in SL is unbelievable.

To attempt to correct this grave error, I suggest you collect lists of the major sources of the allegations; most likely it comes from sources such as the Justice League, Banlink users, and other "security" groups. Then face the accusers and tell your side.

1) the script to do this (steal someones money) is posted here in teh forums in teh scripting libary, skills or not anyone can cut and paste it

2) someone could have edited a object you made an put the script into it to make it look like it was you

3) tell people who accuse you of this to look at there transaction log on secondlife.com it will tell you the name of the user you 'gave' your money to, once they look ask them if it is YOUR NAME in there and when they say no, tell them to stop accussing you of these things.

its very simple to see 'who' you gave money to or 'who' stole your money

there should be no way anyone can accidently say you did it.

and BTW nameing names in the forum is a big NO NO so you might get banned for accusing yourself of stealing and naming your own name.....

The problem is there was a mass message going around SL with my name in it. I can not fight that. The message was being sent in Groups, and I was being banned from group locations. I only found out, because people would stop and read my profile and find out what I am really like, then see it was not me. I have never made anything, so that could not be it.

seriously though, that sucks. I'm in constant fear of someone doing this to me as I sell many items in SL and I assume it would not be that hard. The only steps I can take as of now to try & prevent it are the following::

1. NEVER NEVER give out boxes when you sell things. Why? Because someone can nab the box with MY name as the creator and put bad stuff in it (like that script), they can pretend to be selling my items (with my ad texture on the box) but instead of having the real thing in it only have "crap" in the box that isn't really it, and of course there is more that could be done with a box. Any of these things happening, people take a look at that box and see my name on it, they are gonna come to me for answers I don't have. This gives me a bad name in my business if this were to happen.

2. Never Never give out a freebie script in world. Post it in the scripting library or put it in a notecard the way the Particle Lab owner does, that way if someone uses your scripting, they must make their OWN script to do it with and will never have a script with YOUR name on it.

3. Finally, always double check your permissions on things you give out or sell. The wrong person getting the wrong permissions on your things can not only turn your business into the big new business in a box scheme, they can also put things with or in your items to do bad things to the grid that could result in YOU being the one kicked out over it.

Moving on, it urks me to see people ban others over things they just "heard." That'd be like Wal-Mart not letting me come shop because they "heard" I knocked over a pyramid of cans at some other grocery store or "heard" I stole something from another store. That just seems a little goofy to me.

In short, you will not be banned from my island EVER unless I KNOW you do wrong.

DJ - if you're innocent in this matter, I feel for you. If you're banned by an array of places due to a rumor, its very difficult to determine where those places are or who to contact to try & resolve it. That's what sucks about forum witchunts - its impossible to tell what action lurkers are taking.

If you were banned via BanLink, you could lookup exactly who is leveling these accusations, along with a contact name of who to discuss it with. Unfortunately (or luckly, i guess) - you're not banned by anyone that subscribes to BanLink - so that's not going to help in this case.

I'd suggest this: Its tedious, but the best you can do: When you encounter a place you can't go, try to IM the owner of that parcel individually, and have a friendly chat with them. If they wont listen to reason - at least you tried .

Its probably of little comfort to you considering this situation - but if you speak to the landowner in a reasonable manner, and they still refuse to reverse your ban, are you sure you want to be a guest in that place anyway?

the thing I do not understand is, how can a script steal anyone's money?

they have to accept the money transfer, authorize the debt thing, I have yet to see anything that bypasses that and takes your money

Doesn't matter, really... Seemingly most of Second Life's citizens have no idea what scripts can and cannot do... If someone were to say to a thousand people "Rhaorth Antonelli has a script that will eat all of the cheese in your house", it'd still be a hard rumor to stop. I know, silly example, trying to prove the point about the power of witch-hunt rumors.

A couple days ago there was a storm of 'ban this evil scripter he took my money' messages in the many groups I belong to, and get this, it wasn't about you, Deejay! So either you're talking about an alt of yours or (more lilkely) you have a brother victim out there somewhere ... i looked up the guy's profile and he's been around for quite some time, payment info on file, didn't seem a likely scammer. I wondered at the time if the whole storm had actually been started by some P.O.'d teenager instead of a truly ripped-off noob. (And wouldn't it have to be a noob who was ripped off, who else would ignore the debit permissions dialog?)

I almost objected to these 'evil scripter' messages when I saw them, and from now on I think i will.

I'm gonna become an evil scripter and steal these rumor-mongerers' keyboards!

Welcome to first hand experience with "The Big Lie". It's a common propaganda tool, basicly "If you shout a lie long enough, and loud enough no matter how preposterous it is the great Unwashed Masses will belive it to be true". The problem for you now is, Even if you are able to prove with 100% certainty that you are not guilty of creating or passing this script, a large percentage of the population will STILL rather believe it to be true. People tend to latch on to the First idea they receive, and will Ignore any evidence to the contrary no matter how Certain that evidence is.

In your case it's probable that your name was associated with this phantom script that no one has ever seen directly during some peoples discussions of it. After that, parties to that conversation, in passing on information continued the association until in thier minds, and in the minds of those Listening You became Indisputably the inventor.
It's is also probable that you will Never know who first linked you to this Fictional creation because the person who first made the association by now has convinced themselves that they did not originate the idea, But merely passed on what they had heard from another "reliable source".

Unfortunate.
You are D*mned without trial, and no amount of protest or proof on your part will completely clear you.

DJ, Going on the assumption you are innocent; I would ask those that banned you if any of them still have the object in question which "stole" money. See if they can ask through the same channels spreading the accusations for that object to be turned into LL for investigation.

Why? Because while the person may have taken your prims to place scripts into, the scripts themselves would be tag with the actual "thief's" name. While this may not clear up your bans (at least not quickly), it may very well get the #@$%@$# that used the script to steal perm-banned and out of SL.

I'm working on tracing the originator of this false information in order to clear the name of my brother Deejay Voom - if anyone here has received any messages inworld pertaining to this issue I'd be grateful if you could contact me.

I have one name already, but surprisingly they're not bothering to respond to my polite IMs.

Funny that. Wonder if they'd respond if someone circulated 'unsubstantiated' claims (by their own admission) about them?

This sucks, but Deejay Voom is innocent and will be proven so.

If I were you I would be reporting all the people who had IM'ed you wanting the script.

This sucks if you are indeed innocent. I've banned you from my land as well, i get names of griefers sent to me through a group and you were on the list.

Personally i think you really face a huge uphill battle to clear your name. As your AV is less than 12 days old I think your best bet would be to abandon it and start a new one. Put it down to bad luck.

12 days old???? I was born over 90 days ago (4/2/2007). In that 90 days, I have become a paid member and my DJing business has made over 50K, and now you want me to walk away???? I am a legitimate Businessman that is trying to save his SL business at the moment.

the forum signup date is different than your birthdate in SL.

Really? Mine is the same and I don't think I ever ventured into the forums until a few months ago.

i happened to be with a "friend" at a mall. i tp-ed away just before he started a fight with the owner. both he and i were banned.

another friend saw me on the ban list. i IMed the mall owner talked to him. we got the whole story sorted out and i was de-banned.

so, deejay, talk to the owners of the establishments where you are banned. if they are reasonable (and there is no reason to believe they are not), i'm sure you'll get your good name back. slowly but surely.

Where do you get this list from? I guess i need to work at getting my name off this list. This is getting worst and worst.
