aw great that makes me a crusty old spinster too :P

ah well knew that anyway hehe

I hate gesture spam, I don't mind animations at all but ya, I'm one of those lifeless dolls just standing there (or dancing, don't mind dancing) I don't use a series of poses, and when I am enjoying the music and shout "woooooo!" I'm typing it

and the last thing I do after dressing up for a nite out is say 'bling off' and it's gotten so my partner will remind me. Like, 'did you lock the door?' and 'did you turn off your bling?'

It is actually, at heart, a good idea: if you want to mute someone's spam without muting everything they say, guessing that they wouldn't be bothered to type all the spam in by hand is probably a good bet. So if a feature could be used to "mute automatic chat", which would mute gesture chat, and any chat line where copy+paste had been used, but not typed messages, it could work... although bots could fake it.

Headed straight over to vote!

The number one reason my partner and I rarely go to clubs anymore and when we do it is a VERY select few is the inane gesture spam. And even in those clubs, as soon as the Hooo and Howlzzz starts...we're gone.

From: Joshua Philgarlic
I think one of the most annoying features in SL are gestures! Normally I leave most dance clubs after a while 'cause of all those "HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" noise and chat spam.

So I started a feature request in JIRA to get the ability to disable the use of gestures on my own land and in other places. The first one should be available in land settings, the second one in preferences.

I'm aware that gestures may be useful in many cases, e.g. to start scripts. That's why gestures shouldn't be disabled in general. Some kind of "mute spam on chat channel 0 and gesture caused noise" would be sufficient.

If you like to support my request vote for it at http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8800 !

Hmmm... I actually *like* gestures, and a certain amount of gesture spam. And I'm not young in either worlds. It can be overdone, of course. The gesture spam I really dislike is the kind that throws a conversation off the screen. If a real conversation is going, and a huge HELL YEAH throws it completely off the screen - hell yeah, that's annoying.

I guess it has to do with keeping the energy level up in a club. Conversation is best, of course, but there are times when the club staff is a bit tired, or there is a stall in the conversation... or people are new and not sure where to lead the conversation... having some gestures thrown in during that time is preferable to the dead silence which can cause people to TP out ASAP. Also, as someone else mentioned, when a favorite song comes on, it helps inform the DJ that s/he is going in the right direction.

Sorry, but the jira won't work. Even if there were some way to disable client-side gestures from the sim, there'd be no way to disable *sim*-side gesture-imitating *scripts* (at least not without totally b0rking scripts of all kinds). So the end result would be that annoying gesture crap would be replaced by laggy annoying scripted crap.

Besides, without gestures, we'd have to check profile rezdates to know who's a clueless newbie. :p

Oh, one other comment: The person using a gesture containing sound experiences it totally differently from everybody else in the room. Sounds take absurdly long to download, especially in an avatar-crowded area, so on the first play of a sound gesture, what the gesture-user hears as (loosely) synchronized sound typically occurs for all other listeners several *minutes* later. That is to say: if you know what you're doing, don't even bother with gestures that include sounds.

I see what you did there. Checking your sales for that listing would give you an instant pre-emptive mutelist for any clubs you go to :D (Although to judge from the review you got there, some people just don't understand the principles of delicious irony...)

I use gestures all the time... to tie chat commands for boats to function keys.
hitting F7 in a race is just so much faster than typing /1 m +15, then /1 s +15 and then /1 j +15.
so,
a definite "no" for disabling gestures, unless there's a distinction between gestures that talk to open chat and gestures on hidden channels.

OTOH, anybody who floods a club with "WOOOOOT" + sound more than once in a lifetime should be tarred and feathered.

Gestures are like anything else, they must be used properly
08-30-2008 08:27
As long as people don't over do it, I'm fine with firing them off gestures, I even tend to join in with my collection.;)

I tend to be in some of the same regions as Immy as well as in the Raglan regions and gestures get fired off like crazy, but not a single one is an irritating one.
During tiny events we tend to use the boing and tiny river dance gesture alot, plus what ever else we have in our active sets.:D

I even have gestures that control scripted attacments like my 7Seas fishing rod, and a series of them that are AO controls that I made (some even have confirmation sounds) so I don't have to manualy type the commands.

My gesture arsenal my not be as big as other people's but I only fire them off when appropriate, and most are short sounds and/or simple text. My longer ones are fired off once or twice then I'm done and only in places where they don't interfere with the audio in the area.;)

Sound emitted by gestures can be muted separately at your end

Unless things have changed recently, the slider that controls gesture sound volume controls the volume of all object sounds, too. I'd like these to be separately controlled.

I didn't vote for this because it would be irrelevant to me unless I could mute it on my client if I went out.
Out of 5 years my first alt and I have been around I never used gestures more then five times never found them amusing nor have I have been able to get them to work since FD first joined.
Some guy thought I was laying about being around that long because I don't know or can't get gestures to work.
I find them in annoying in clubs but even if the jira thing passed it would help me to avoid gesture spam if club hadn't disabled it or was fond of it I still subjected to gesture spam where ever it was allowed.

Muting usually works for me. I was in a great club recently, but this bozo had me hitting the mute button after the first couple of minutes:

From: someone
[2008/07/19 16:27] Muted Jerk: ...Don't Mess with Me...
[2008/07/19 16:27] Muted Jerk: ...I got ATTITUDE !!!
[2008/07/19 16:27] Muted Jerk: ...Don't Mess with Me...

[2008/07/19 16:27] Muted Jerk: ...Don't Mess with Me...
[2008/07/19 16:27] Muted Jerk: ...I got ATTITUDE !!!
[2008/07/19 16:27] Muted Jerk: ...You're Silly !!!
He then proceeded to repeat the following:

From: someone
[2008/07/19 16:30] Muted Jerk: ...I'm cute...
[2008/07/19 16:30] Muted Jerk: ...Yes it's true...
[2008/07/19 16:30] Muted Jerk: ...I really can't help it, but what can I do ???
[2008/07/19 16:30] Muted Jerk: ...When you're cute...It just shows !!!
a grand total of TWENTY-ONE TIMES (trust me, I spared you: I could have pasted them *all* in a quote from the chat log...) before I managed to open my mute list and type his name and thankfully silence him for good. That's twenty-one times in three minutes, because his first yell of that "I'm cute" started at 16:30 and the last one before blissful silence came at 16:33.

I enjoyed my night a lot more after that...

Ralektra, if you have items with bling that you always turn off, you could try using the Anti-Bling Script from the FabFree store. I had a great medieval cloak that had a jewel clasp with a tiny bit of bling in it. I loved the cloak, hated even that small bit of sparkle, but someone told me about the anti-bling kit and I put it into each prim of the clasp that I found with a bling script in it, and it killed the sparklies.

No, I'm not against animations! I'm only talking about sound and chat spam.

um, you can turn your "sounds" off...thats what I do
but I gotta gree about the chat spam... and usually its the hosts doing it... I do not mind one or two lines... but....

you know with a smaller chat window half of those things just look stupid.

Of course it can start a fight, but its probably more helpful from a social engineering point of view, if you announce in open chat who you are muting.

If you don't like gestures don't go near a large group of tinies
08-31-2008 08:28
If you go to any event in the Raglan regions, be ready to get blasted with gestures from all the tinies who are there.:p

If several of us have the same ones we wind up setting of a chain reaction with them such as the tiny river dance and boing getstures. And new ones tend to be made on the sopt and passed around.

Most of our getsture arsenals are complete with sounds, chat, animations, and most of them are crazy ones!! No matter what the event happens to be, we tinies aways will go nuts and may rapid fire our gestures!! The reason behind our maddness, ITS FUN!!:D
