Fight against gesture spam!

I think one of the most annoying features in SL are gestures! Normally I leave most dance clubs after a while 'cause of all those "HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" noise and chat spam.

So I started a feature request in JIRA to get the ability to disable the use of gestures on my own land and in other places. The first one should be available in land settings, the second one in preferences.

I'm aware that gestures may be useful in many cases, e.g. to start scripts. That's why gestures shouldn't be disabled in general. Some kind of "mute spam on chat channel 0 and gesture caused noise" would be sufficient.

If you like to support my request vote for it at http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8800 !

...so you don't use gestures to trigger animations at all and prefer to look like a lifeless doll that goes through looped motions of your stand AO?

No, I dislike misuse of gestures and unreadable chat spam just as much as anyone, if not more, but I don't think this is the way to deal with that.

No, I'm not against animations! I'm only talking about sound and chat spam.

Agreed, and you can't really tell, server-side,what's a gesture and what's not, because it's just chat, sound triggers, and animation triggers. But we do need more options... I'd vote for the ability to disable the use of SoundTrigger (primarily used for the sound part of gestures), but really I'd like to see *alot* more landowner options. Not so people can just disable nice things for the heck of it, but so they can effectively create the user experience they want to.

Sound emitted by gestures can be muted separately at your end, and while it isn't something I'd like to do often, in particular in a club you are probably listening to the music anyway. Now, doing something about chat spam would make sense...

...but maybe writing a script that detects it and warns people by IM, and ejects them if they don't stop would be easier than pushing through a JIRA. :)

I'm still not sure exactly whatyou mean by "gestures"... but I do hate the chat spam/ASCII -FLOOD-crap that fills up the chat window and destroys all conversation.

More rules is never the answer, but I sure would be happy to have simple flood protection for my chat window - you know, like we've had in IRC clients for a decade or more.

For those of you who may not remeber IRC: Any more than x(user adjustable)-number of rapid consecutive carriage returns in the chat from the same source woudl cause the client to choke that source for a predetermined period.

We have MUTE that should do it.

There is absolutely no reason this should be a Jira or any focus of LL's time.

What Briana said.

While I don't mind putting up with the occasional WOOOT during my travels, in a club the person using that tiresome wolf ascii art would be muted instantly. My theory is that anyone who needs to resort to chat gestures isn't able to carry on a conversation, anyway, and is not someone I need to see on my screen.

I'm constantly peppering my chat with gestures... But they're mostly subtle. Nothing with more than 2 or 3 seconds of sound. They mostly have meaningful chat text, or none at all. (^_^)

My most obtuse one is a "LAWL" that triggers a small particle poofer of "LAWL ^-^" around me for a split second. The best part is that it's a no-scripts enabled script. It quickly turns into a conversation piece in welcome areas. (^_^)

The fun part is that my chat is always ended with a smiley... People have requested that I "turn that gesture off". I tell them... They're all hand typed. Usually followed by a string of OMG! from the people around. (^_^)y

I haven't been able to get the / gestures to work for long time, not that I miss it.
I think it is bugged on my version for months. Personally I wouldn't want disabled on land just disabled on user or some type of selective mute for gestures certain type of chat spam gestures..

A very sweet guy made me a "LittleMe Blows Kiss" ascii gesture that I sometimes use, though not very often. It does take up quite a few chat lines. I have only ever used it at the Hangout with folks I know and have never used it more than once on any given visit there. I use it so seldom and it is so cute, that I really don't think most folks there mind.

I have been around you a little bit. The only thing I can say that bothers me about your emotes is that I can't figure out what they mean.

Would you mind issuing an Immy Emote Translation Guide?

I personally hate those club goer emotes. The howling and10-20 lines of ASCII art. For the most part i no longer go to 'regular' clubs anymore where that kind of crap is allowed. I try to only go to gatherings with more mature residents who all feel the same way about club going chat/gesture spam. PMG Cafe on Tuesdays and Radio Free Darkmere all through the week have gatherings with a bunch of people who never engage in that juvenile behavior.

I figured since this was 2008 I would just be more accepting and that maybe i was some old crusty spinster who hated fun, but no...the truth is that chat gesture party spam sucks.

And while you people who do that are reading this, how about ditching your K-mart looking blingtardia as well as the gesture spam. k? thx bai.

/me throws up her arms and yells "Hooooo!!!" for the OP

The clubs I usually go to tend to encourage the hoos, howls, growls, and woots near the beginning of a song you like, as way of showing approval and giving feedback to the DJ for the song selelction. I've been told by quite a few DJ's that they like to use that feedback to help narrow down what direction to go musically (tempo, era, genre, mood, etc..), based on reaction. It's not always just a bunch of overly excited, immature monitor lickers going off again.
Sometimes we have a purpose :p
And yeah, anything done excessively is annoying. But then a good venue manager should also be speaking up to keep the bigger offenders under control. If not, there's always a local sound volume slider, and/or mute if the text is bothersome. I would support a local viewer-based filtering of stuff originating from gestures, but not any kind of parcel based allow/disallow. I don't see any point to disallowing gesture use at the parcel level if a local filter would work for those who wish to have things sanitized for them.

Side note: I never understood why some people go to crowded clubs full of partygoers, and then complain when their intimate little cyber-moment-for-two is interrupted by the goings on.

EDIT: added the word "immature" above because, apparently, gesture users aren't mature.

When I was new, I thought the gestures were cute. I also thought bling was cute. Now, I find both annoying, which means this must be a symptom of old age.

Rather than howling, I use "great song," "love this song," or "good choice," as my comments on musical tastes. If I don't like the song, I'll keep quiet or say something, "not my mood." One time, another said something about a song, and it sparked a long conversation about music vs moods. Which is the kind of feedback I'd rather see.

Hoooowwwwlll ^.^!!!!!!111!!! does not spark anything but the, "ah, to be young and dumb!"

Now, get offa my prim!

if something bothers me I simply leave instead of trying to force what I like or dislike onto others. its rather easy :)

your K-mart looking blingtardia ...

Hahaha, THAT's what that blingy stuff reminds me of! K-mart jewelry! The sort you can buy for 5.99 in those little fake velvet packets. Great stuff for a present for an 8-year old.

Someone ought to talk to K-mart about marketing shoes that beam sparkly stuff into people's eyes. Considering its popularity in SL, there ought to be a market for it.

The key to bling is to make it subtle.
The key to gestures is to turn off sound.

Joshua, I understand your frustration.
If you disable gestures all together, someone could do the same thing by cut and pasteing from a note card and double-clicking the sound files. Besides breaking convience guestures (like ao off for one button easy) I would be worried that the gesture spammers would see that it was turned off and make a double effort to spam away even harder in such areas.

Hahaha! In school, we didn't even call that stuff "bling". We called it "plink" (from the sound it makes when something contacts it)!

If lots of us send them emails and such, we might be able to talk them into this.

.... (and if anyone actually does that, I might have to hunt you down, strap you to a chair, staple your eyelids open and prop you in front of a table containing lots and lots of blingy crap, making sure that you have your particles turned all the way up).
