From: Giannia Rossini Because I have seen the logs of tapped IMs, when they have been relevent to cases I have worked. The use of spy scripts is against the TOS, heavily so - not to mention kind of a nastily stupid thing to do to other people. Would you appreciate your privacy being violated in such a fashion?

From: Object Pascale So you are not only aware of an exploit, but have seen first-hand evidence of it in the form of unlawfully obtained private conversations, and even used that compromised data to further your in-world career? From: someone
Yes, I am aware now. No, I was not aware of the exploit until it was a done deal.
Yes I have seen evidence. No, I have not used the information, but was shown it after the case was closed. They wanted to show me that my assessment of the situation was wrong.
No, I have not advanced my career. No, I do not work for the PI anymore.
If somebody comes to you and says, "I robbed a bank, here is the money I stole," does that make you a bank robber?
By US law, it makes you an "accessory after the fact". However, I am unaware of any provision of the TOS that requires me to report malfeasance committed by others.
So piss off!

You do know that IM logs are very easily faked.

From: Chris Norse You do know that IM logs are very easily faked. *nods* That's what Notepad is for and why LL (not to mention other users) don't encourage the posting of chat logs in here or in world. And as for reporting the exploit? Giannia, I would, if it could be proven 100% that the chat log wasn't faked. Right now, I'll say, I think they were faker than a Halloween wig!

By US law, it makes you an "accessory after the fact". If you accept the money you are a receiver of stolen goods. If you hide him knowing that he has committed a crime, then you are an accessory after the fact. They're separate offences, but being found guilty of either would make you a criminal, so I'm confused about the point. From: Giannia Rossini However, I am unaware of any provision of the TOS that requires me to report malfeasance committed by others.
So piss off! Predictable.

No, I am pretty sure they are genuine, because the upshot of the case was that the PI successfully used the information to persuade the target to release some captives. If it was fake, why would it have worked? Plus, the actual details are such that nobody would have made this up, and the tapped IMs reference a webpage that was disgustingly incriminating for the target.
Do you think that LL has no way to tap your IMs? If they do, then there is no reason to believe that somebody could not figure out how to access that same information

From: Giannia Rossini Do you think that LL has no way to tap your IMs? There's certainly no such functionality built into the client, even for Linden accounts. Go peek at the source Luke. From: Giannia Rossini If they do, then there is no reason to believe that somebody could not figure out how to access that same information If employees of Linden Lab need to check on our conversations (public or private), they have months and months of them archived on digital media for legal reasons. That archived data isn't accessible via the SL client for obvious reasons.

If they do, then there is no reason to believe that somebody could not figure out how to access that same information Frankly, one would be stupid to think that LL doesn't record them. But for someone outside LL to access this, it's called an EXPLOIT. Heck, I think this could be called a hacking offense and if LL wanted, they could prosecute the person who did it. And 'ignorance' of the crime at the time doesn't save someone from being an accessory or a receiver of 'stolen' goods.
