Vending machine called "HACKBOX ALL" dropped by ZHAO Yiyuan

Cost: $L2999

Claim: * New IM-Spy * Read instant messages from other people. Undetectable.
No distance limits. Works in all areas. (Only 1 person at a time)

Documentation:

Hello and welcome to the SL-Underground,

Thanks for buying this tool, to read other peoples instant messages. Have you ever wondered, what your girlfriend is really thinking about, or whether she dates other men? Well, here's a tool to find out, whether you can really trust her without beeing afraid to get detected. Be sure, you follow the Instructions step by step.

1) Get the ID of the person you want to spy from the profile, or use free keygrabber tool.
2) Rezz the IM-Spy on the ground and press Ctrl+Alt+T to see/hide it.
3) Enter the ID in the _avatarID notecard from its content folder. (don't rename it)
4) Save the notecard.
5) Close the content and restart the IM-Spy to read the _avatarID notecard
6) Take the IM-Spy in your inventory and attach it to whatever
7) Say "listen" on secret channel 777 (the other person has to be in close chat range) and a new chat window will open, where you can read incoming and outgoing instant messages of that person to other people. DO NOT WRITE INTO THIS WINDOW!!!
8) To stop listening, just close the window, or detach the IM-Spy.
9) To change the person you want to spy, simply start at 1) again and enter another ID. You can only listen to one person at a time.

Have fun!

Troubleshooting:
Sometimes it can happen that due to lag or whatever, the IM-Spy can't connect at the first try. Just give it another try, or try it on land that is not as crowded. It's working 100% (Second Life v. 1.14.7 (1)).
---

I was unable to make it work. And I expect it wont ever work. Any ideas? Should it and the person be warned?

Sounds like a scam - about $US 12 per scam. Is there one born every minute in SL as well?

Looks like Psyke did just that, and couldn't make it work. There's nothing that I can think of in LSL that would enable such an exploit directly, as it would likely require the ability to do TCP socket connections. If it works at all, there's an off-grid component to it doing the dirty work, and sending the IM data back to the script.

Unless someone confirms through a reproducible experiment that this really works, I am pretty sure that it's a scam.

As already stated, there is no function in LSL to overhear IMs other people are exchanging.

No need to get agitated over a rumour ...

You should get a Linden to take a look at the source just to rule it out as a potential exploit. Time to get Brent Linden out of bed? :p

Edit: As those snot-noses say in group IMs. "Reported!" I fired an email off to Brent rather than file an exploit AR because according to an ancient blog post, those things interrupt his sleep, and I suspect this is really a scam.

It's a scam .. I came across this "object" a day or so ago .. along with two others .. one each of three colours Red Yellow and Blue .. the second one claimed to be some sort of uber copybot and could take a copy of the contents of any vendor in SL .. the third I can't remember the claimed purpose I was laughing so much .. one thing they all had in common was the free floating text clock script they were running.

On the upside, anyone who is enough of an asshat to actually buy this product with the intent of spying on people deserves to lose the money :D

Actually, there are such things, because I have worked for a PI who uses them. There is also a bug detector, sold here, that finds them. And I have found a few.

So there!

This one is probably a scam, but such bugs do exist.

The thing is, this guy is dropping them everywhere. I had a bunch of them on my land the other day.

Just placing vendors wherever you want... if that's not a sign something's shady, I don't know what is.

Hehehhe, a PI in SL? What does he/she investigate? Can see it now, instead of getting in a cab and saying "follow that car" it'll be "follow that teleport" Are there even taxis in SL.. Sorry, got totally off topic :p

Bullshit. I'll give you 10,000L as soon as you prove it by providing me a notecard of any one of my IM conversations.

Yea these things are being dropped everywhere. Anytime I find someone has placed something for sale on my sim that is either not a renter or a crap tool like this, the people get banned. Since ARs dont even get replies, I havent bothered. I'm one of those that is pretty sure its a scam, hopefully people arent falling for it.

just because LL doesn't reply to you doesn't mean they don't do anything but they cann't do anything if they don't know about it

But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Because I have seen the logs of tapped IMs, when they have been relevent to cases I have worked.

So you are not only aware of an exploit, but have seen first-hand evidence of it in the form of unlawfully obtained private conversations, and even used that compromised data to further your in-world career?

Let's hope no Lindens are reading this thread.

Edit: Actually, let's hope there are.

this admission, if true opens you up to many TOS violations.
