I think I must be utterly slow, but what was this buisiness on the blog about--

"We’ll keep less exact information as a way to allow Residents, if they should so choose, to share verified aspects of their identity with others in Second Life — ie, not an exact date of birth, but an age (over 30) and not a specific address, but a city and country."

Surely, they aren't going to use 30 as the cutoff point for mature sims, are they? Or is this just a way to allow residents to detect "mutton dressed as lamb"? It strikes me as a bit silly, if that's the case.

I think he was talking about additional info you could put in there, if you want to.

Like, if you want to say in your profile that you're over 30, they will now have a way to do that and have it validated. If you don't want to, you don't have to.

I'd pay the devil himself to validate me as "under 30"... just saying!

A little bit pointless though.
People asked for a voluntary way to have certain info verifiable for business transactions and such, LL give them age verification and fuzzy details. I sometimes think LL speak a different form of english.

It was an example. If you want, you will be able to show an aproximation (not exact because of privacy concerns) of your verified age in your profile. If you are 33, it will show "over 30". If you are 23, it will show "over 20". That's it. Nothing there about adult places being restricted to 30-somthings.

Have it verified when you are 29, and then never update it. 8-)

Surely if you are over 30, you are by a process of mathematical elimination over 20 too...

I can see the advantage of using the over 30 flag -for potential dating partners LOL.

I have had some bad experiences with 20 year olds.

so basically between voice and 'verification' of various details they have managed to merge rl into sl.

I was just wondering, as the point (I thought) behind age verification was to ensure that underaged children weren't sneaking onto the grid.

I suppose they are trying to add another "feature", which might be useful for those who think SL ought be a "pick up zone". Each to his/her own, I suppose. Then again, perhaps lack of said information on one's profile might discourage unwanted attention.

It's like watching Utopia crumble right before your eyes. I'm starting to wonder if it's time to roll up the carpets. This really is getting rediculous. I loved this platform when I joined, but it's starting to feel a bit like the New York political system. Make it pretty, sweep the dirty bits under the rug, and wait for everyone to start pouring in. Problem is, everyone starts puring out too and you're stuck with a bunch of tourists looking for a flavor that no longer exists. Me thinks LL is getting to big for their britches.

The “over 30” designation is voluntary so you won’t be forced to label yourself if you don’t want to. How does a voluntary label ruin SL for you? Don’t you label yourself when you join groups and such?

As for the age verification, which is a separate issue btw—I think that does more to protect the utopia rather than ruin it. LL labs could face a potential shutdown or legal action if doesn’t take reasonable steps to try and prevent children from accessing inappropriate material. I think the only people who would likely be upset by these things are children who are prevented from accessing the adult grid.

No, but there is an "early bird special" login guarantee and a special "extra fiber" teleport feature :D

It's funny how people latch on to examples and take them as a literal "facts". I believe that statement was put out as example of "non specific age" if you so choose to put it in your profile. Let's say you are 50 years old and verified..........you could put "45 years old" and LL would allow that to be entered in the profile. You could also put over 20 and it would work too. But if you put in over 60 it wouldn't allow that. But if you are unverified and attempted to put any age in your profile I don't think it would work. Or if you are barely 18 (and verified) and put over 20 that wouldn't work either.

I just didn't see any indication that there would brackets we would have to fall into.....such as over 20 but under 30 or over 30 and under 40. We can still lie about our ages.....as long as we are verified. But, of course, the assumption could be made that each verified is over 18. And by the same token each unverified would have to be considered to be under 18 if that person is to try to participate in "adult" endeavors.

The fact of the matter is that we do not know for sure..........and ranting and raving about what was taken literally when obviously set out as an example is really silly paranoia. Or "trolling". I'm waiting for facts.

Im hoping its not as you describe.

"Allow" me to put it in my profile?

sounds kinda messed - I should be able to say what I want in my profile as long as it doesnt break the Offensive type rules.

I assumed this stuff was more of a flag thing - such as "display over 18, display over 21, display over 30" and it would display the one you chose, as long as you qualify

and "display country" "display city" , etc.

Or were going to police what people say in their profiles now?

"Wow - she said she liives on Hawaii but i know shes in Denver - I'm going to AR her. "

Hmm can't say I 'm wrapped at the idea of wearing an "old fart" sign above my head beacause I'm 39, though never lie about my RL age, I feel it certainly destroys the illusion of your SL avatars RP appearance. And still behave like I'm 29 anyway :P

as long as you know I am over the age of consent in my country... nothing more is any of your business unless I elect to reveal it.

So if you are, say, 60, and get age verified, can you list your age as 22 in the first life tab of your profile?

That's the way I read it Suezanne :) And you don't have to put anything in any field if you don't want to either. Put what you want......but it will be checked against the verification system for accuracy. My bet is most will not a thing in the profile.........but as long as they are verified you can make the assumption that they are at least over 18 (or whatever the legal age of consent is for a particular country of origin).

I'm failing to see the reason people are getting their panties all waded up over this. :)
