I just lost INV again today, even after a cache clear and relog. Everyoen I know has also lost INV at least once in th elast month, some 4 times now!

If there are 4 mill+ accounts and everyone liost only a 10L item, that then means that all these updates are costing residetns over 40 MILLION L in losses each month!

Some vedors will replace items, but some are a real pain about replacing lost items.

I totalled my loases this last month, and I'm lookin gat over $1700 L in lost items this last month alone!

And if each resident is loosing even $500 L a month in lost items, that means that we are now talking about a a half a BILLON L in lost INV items each month!

With these numbers, LL really NEEDS to store INV databases locally, instea dof relying on a system that worked when there were 1/4 of the number of current accounts, and 1/3 of the peopel online regularly.

I just don't look in my inventory. Too scared.

Also, I think many of us are realizing our bitching doesn't do a damn thing.

I bitched about land bots for weeks and weeks and they have made it easier for them to operate and there are now more bots automatically buying up the cheap land than ever.

I bitched about lag and the lag is worse.

Done bitching.

I have never lost anything from my inventory, so I have no reason to complain about it.

If I lost things from inventory, I'd probably complain more. Since I don't, I don't. The only time I've ever lost things is when I've put down a no-copy/no-transfer object just before a sim crash..

Why would a cache clear help with losing inventory? /me is confused..

Clearing the cashe will cause the client to redownload all the information. Sometimes when items are missing, they just aren't showing up in inventory, but are still listed in the DB. If the DB is requeried, the items may reappear.

First, to assume that this problem happens to everyone is quite unreasonable. It absolutely doesn't happen to everybody. I obviously don't have any data to back this up, but I suspect it's only happening to a very small percentage of residents. It just happens that they have found the forums, and are vocal about it here. It's never happened to me, however I certainly don't lack sympathy for those to whom it has.

As far as storing inventory locally, that isn't without risk, for a number for reasons, not the least being security of other's intellectual property. This is a very highly (and thoroughly) debated topic here in the forums.

I would suggest going back and reading the transcript of the last townhall with Cory Linden - alot was said about what is in the works for this year, and they have already began to roll pieces of the plan into the grid. Expect 2007 to remain shaky, with slow, moderate improvements until it's all in.

I'm not without sympathy, but I've never permanently lost anything either. Both my Lindens and my inventory always come back. I suppose if they didn't, I would get upset, and I would be less likely to buy things or keep Lindens on hand.

How often are things *permanently* lost?

There was a thread on the blog where a lot of people were crying tremendous foul about how they had lost all kinds of stuff and how terrible it all ways.

However, it was right when the grid was experiencing problems. Everybody was having trouble accessing their inventory. Later, everything was back.

My *impression* is that most of the "ak! lost inventory!" cries result from people who can't find something, but not from people who *permanently* lose something. How often does *permanent* loss really happen?

Permenent loss happens quite frequently. I have lost a number of items and I deal routinely with customers who have lost a recently purchesed item and never and I do mean never have it show up in their inventory. Many also try to rez something to world only to have it disappear completely. This is a known and long term problem that LL is not doing anything about. Actually if you look at normal trends the number of people complaining is typically a small percentage of the people who actually are experiencing the problem.

Many people also are losing things and may never know as it is something used infrequently or they think they may have just misplaced it or forgotten its name. This is a large enough problem effecting enough people that it should not be made light of. With SL's direct relationship between L$ and $USD people are losing real money, if it continues and or worsens a good lawyer may be able to make a strong case against LL their TOS not withstanding.

People keep saying they will get a lawyer, yet no one does. There was one lawsuit that I know of against LL for lost land that was gained via an exploit. I would guess that the TOS is pretty good. I am sure they don't want lawsuits against them.

As of lost inventory, what good does it really do to complain on the forums about missing items? Does it happen, yes. Does whining on the forums get it resolved? No. When I have issues I take it up with support directly. Sometimes it takes longer, but I have found as long as I keep up with ticket, I will get an answer. Sometimes I don't like the answer, but I will get an issue resolved.

Sometimes it will cause the client to do so, yes. Unless you tried that during this last week. Yesterday, for instance, it took 4 hours for my client to finally download everything again.

And, of course, everything that has gone missing on me over the last 9 months is still missing :/

And with the stupid "Failed to rez object" and "Failed to create object inventory" errors so ubiquitous, and merchants who insist on making "no copy" items and never replacing them, people are losing inventory at a faster rate than ever.

I'm on the other site of wall compared to others, I have more copies of my inventory than less. Which is why i really dont post about it. Even though i was told by a Linden that it would be fixed within about 24-48 hours (24-48 hours, 2 Weeks ago) I still dont post about it. Because I'd rather have more copies than less.

I have had over 3k of items permanently lost, none through any fault of my own. You don't hear more residents complain because the chief public avenues of complaint have all been closed. All you can do is leap into the abyss that is "support@" and fade away from view.

So complaints are effectively erased from public hearing, and attempts to share one's experiences in this forum are subject to attack by other residents who downcry anyone pointing out any shortcomings in the game they venerate, out of some misguided, slavish loyalty. Perhaps the BDSM community can shed light on that dynamic. :p

Am I happy? Nope.

Have I given up on the recovery of my lost inventory? Yes.

Has this impacted my decision to remain a non-premium member? You bet...never going to happen.

Do I recommend this game/platform/medium to my friends? Not a chance.

That's about all one can do. Don't trust LL to store your inventory. I'm sure they would love to guarantee your inventory data (god, I hope that's true), but sadly they simply don't have the technical know-how or resources to do so.

Basically, all our inventories could be empty tomorrow....forever....and they would not hold themselves in the least responsible. Naturally this hurts business in SL, because the things you purchase are stored at LL and LL can't/won't guarantee safe storage of that data, but you won't hear about that anywhere in the media. More than the issues of scalability, this inability to retain and retrieve data (or respond to customers whose data has been lost) is what will keep Second Life from fulfilling the grandiose dreams LL has for the platform.

something else VERty interesting, is even though I subscribed with instant email notification, I got no bot announcement of a reply.

So far, I've lost things from spider productions, The Neko ear and tail set, some of my OWN wip products, my dance chim with 4 purchased dances ($1800 right there! Thanksfully, owenmations replaced them for me), and today, a bare Rose outfit I had just purshaded, to name a few.

The transaction completed, the product was delivered, bu tI couldn;t wear or attach anything.

I relogged, and was only hair n fangs.. and the new outfit was totally gone from my inv! Not one or two parts of it, the entire thing, which was a folder, and 12 items.

I cleared cache twice, and relofgged more then that until i could finally get my avi to appear, but the inv never showed back up again.

I don't mind th elosses if the vendors replace the lost items, but with the huge growth we're seeing, in a short time, they'll just stop doing that, because of the massive number of issues.

And to those who's never lost anything.. count yourself very luck.. I know of at LEAST 30 people who's lost inv items.

I think Sweet Primrose nailed it pretty squarely on the head. I haven't lost nearly as much as some..........but I have lost inventory that has vanished forever. I've had things wind up in my trash folder that I never deleted (found those with a search while looking for other lost items.........don't empty your trash without looking first, ever). It's stupid stuff like that that I see no reason for being so widespread and chronic..........."cutting edge" or not. There's a blog just today about inventory, tp, avis not loading, etc that have been chronic since I've been associated with SL.............Torley Linden all but admitted that they don't have a clue. This "platform" is way too deep in developement to still be having the same problems for at least the year I've been here...........someone (or some group of someones) is in way over their heads.

And on the reasons people don't bitch. They don't bitch because it does not do any good at all. The SL excusers will tell you that all day long.........they are right. But the sad thing is that when people quit trying to tell someone something over and over with no clear, honest answers it means they've given up. And any company or business that has a client base that has given up on them is destroyed. The loyal will stick with them but they cannot save them. The first virtual platform that comes along with even remotely similar features will take all the silent, disgruntled SLer's in a heartbeat. The mainstream members in SL will settle for a little less if they don't have to deal with the hassles of just "playing the game"........when it's not fun then why "play"? Then all the willing "beta testers" will be happy with a dying virtual world.

Pretty sad in my eyes.

I've had it Look like I've lost inventory but the only time I evere really did lose it was when I deleted the folders I thought empty, otherwise it usually all comes back again when the problem is sorted out.
I was missing $6k worht of stuff last night, but it's all back now, it was always there I think, I just couldn't see it.

Tegg, I've had that happen too. But I also have lost stuff that has never showed up again. I've lost uploaded textures...........about 10 that I can remember. They have never showed up and I did pay the $10L each too. I've lost whole outfits in folders that were not deleted by me. I've lost parts of outfits within folders that were not deleted by me. On occassion I have found things in the trash folder that I didn't even know I was missing..........but sure I did not delete them. Like I said, I've not lost near as much as many but maybe about $3000L worth (what, 12 or 15 USD?) but it's all real money in the end. Plus it's a bad thing to have the company you are forced to trust your stuff to just blow you off with "sorry, but read our TOS and you will see we are not responsible". It's a problem that needs to be addressed and fixed.

But, I've stated my opinion already. :)

Don't upload textures during a lagstorm, or take anything no-copy to inventory.

I've lost texture uploads and whole builds due to that problem. Your stuff works ok while you're on the sim you uploaded/rezzed but you'll find it was really some twilight zone episode where everything you thought happened, hadn't.

No black cats walking across the floor, though, so who knows.

Anything you "lose" due to rez failures, go have a nosey underground at the 0,0,0 coordinate of the sim you're on.

Oh, and hope that the Lindens don't do an unannounced rollback of your sim and wipe out $2k worth of nocopy stuff you just put out :)

I've only had two instances of lost inventory. Once, I was unable to find a skin of mine...come to find out it was in the Lost and Found folder...not sure how it got there, but I also found a couple of other things there too.
Another time, I was setting out a Greedy table at the same time the Lindens decided to do an un-announced Sim reboot, and I lost that. I waited a day to see if it would re-appear or perhaps the creator had it returned to him for some reason. It didn't, so I sent the creator of the table an IM explaining what happened and he gave me a new table.
