So... since we had all the hype, and "so many people" were clamouring to use voice... I can't seem to find anyone anywhere using it.

I can't even be sure if it's working properly, although I hear myself in my headphones.

Any suggestions for places to go where Voice is always being used?

Try the Ahern or Waterhead welcome areas (but be prepared to tolerate a bit of usually-harmless voice griefing ... there's always the "Mute" button if it annoys you too much).

Ideally you shouldn't be hearing your own voice through the headphones unless you've specifically configured the OS mixing options to do that.

Hope that helps...

Pi.

I finally found some people 'voice enabled' at Ahern ... and nobody using it.

I'm kinda guessing that... it's not the overwhelming, desperately wanted by the majority of players, success it was claimed to be.

Probably better to wait until it's been added to the main viewer before passing judgement on how popular it is perceived to be ;) I'm guessing most people don't trust or don't know about the FirstLook viewer yet (I've personally found it more reliable than the main viewer but I know others who haven't).

You're probably on way too early in the day to see many people using it much. Try later in the evening, then you'll find a lot more people chatting.

I finally find someone using voice... in french, and I can't understand a word of it. Typical.

Voice isn't all it's hyped to be. I don't have it, don't intend to. The sim I am at most of the time, has; till further noticed, banned it. Due to more verbal griefing going on then anything else.
Then you have a number of people that wont ever use voice due to the fact it would give their age and sex away. It is my opinion that voice; like weapons, will only be enabled in certain areas. From the opinions I have been able to gather, quite a few people think it's more an annoyance then anything else.

and I am on the opposite side of the coin, I love voice
it is enabled on my land, and so far only once have I seen(heard) griefing in voice

overall the experience for me as been a very good one, and I think it will be widely used as ppl get used to it

also I feel it is going to be a very helpful way for businesses to communicate to the customers, and for those folks who have a difficult time typing, to be able to further enjoy the experience of SL

I'm usually open about what i am IRL, because so many people seam to be so concerned about it for who knows why...

I use voice most of the time, unless my client is lagging and i need to disable some things.

The unfortunate thing I expect to develop from widespread use of voice is the inevitable partitioning of the user community into those who can use voice, and those whose RL environmental constraints preclude its use. Those of us in the latter camp (plus all the Linux users) will simply have no choice but to ignore the voice-users... and the voice users aren't gonna want to type out stuff just for the "deaf-mutes" who cannot or dare not enable voice.

I suppose it's no worse than partitioning by language, but I know I'm gonna lose friends to the "new language" of voice, with whom I'll rarely if ever converse again.

If you lose friends...you never really had them in the first place, IMHO. I CAN use voice...but my experience with it has been more of a "wha?". It's good for a few things...and an interesting option...but, unless I can find a REALLY good modulator that makes me sound like Barry White...fuhgedaboudit....

I am happy using text since it reaches everyone in SL. If I am ignored by people using voice so be it. I preffer not to.

I had started another thread asking for a comparison between the SL Voice feature and other chat options - such as Yahoo. I don't talk with a bunch of peeps at a time and Yahoo works well for me. I can see where this is not convenient generally for in-game interaction with peeps u don't know, but as a one-on-one option, it is something to consider.

Avatars I've seen around for the past year....whom I never spoke too much but admired from afar. Avatars whose real lives I'd apparently made all kinds of subconscious decisions about. They built the most fantasic things...dressed with such amazing style....I'd "overheard" conversations which suggested excellent taste in art & music. Young, hip, talented, sexy....adjectives which don't even begin to convey the mental image I had. None of us are fools of course, we know what reality is more likely to be like, but suspension of disbelief is as important to Second Life as it is to a Hollywood Film. So when I bump into these people in a voice enabled world, but the voices that come out sound more like Joan Rivers' or Les Battersby's (and that's just me :p) than Angelina Jolie's or Brad Pitt's....well, I can't help but wonder if a big part of the dream is over.

We've been able to leave so much of our RL selves behind for so long...to impress people with bodies and clothes that were dreams even for those who weren't prodded with the ugly stick at birth; we've transcended all kinds of social barriers to indulge in relationships that might be controversial in real life, but which didn't require a second thought in this one; we've been able to experiment with identity in ways not available to us when we logout. Voice puts SO much distance between avatar and RL person, that at the very surface -- even a choice of clothes and shape previously seen as 'cool'...suddenly appears VERY incongruous.

I feel like lighting a candle or planting a tree to mourn the end of a very special era.

I understand what you mean, Object.

I have known folks on a different forum for about a couple of years. We talk everyday and exchange thoughts and life's occurances, etc. Recently several of us discovered SL and have naturally added some commetnary on it there as well -we have shared pix from around SL and pix of our avis. The other day, after reading a thread here somewhere where peeps were posting a pick of themselves compared with their avi - I did the same.

Someone commented soemthing close to what you said - how her idea of me was blown - she thought I was tall and skinny - I'm 5'3" and do NOT have my avi's abs! But excepting for some obvious vanity, I tried to make my avi look like me. I gave her my hair, my eyes, my height. Yes, she is thinner, she has longer hair and is younger - isn't everyone about 20 something in SL?

But I didn't deserve to hear her say - ugh - she says it refered to the concept being changed for her, but it did bother me - what can I say? So, maybe we all need to realize, "we are seldom what we seem and hardy ever what we dream..." and in SL, we can live our dreams.

Best not to share too much I guess. It just doesn't ever end how one would wish.

I share those sentiments.

Fool On The Hill

(The Beatles)

Day after day, alone on the hill,
The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still.
But nobody wants to know him,
They can see that he's just a fool.
And he never gives an answer .....

But the fool on the hill,
Sees the sun going down.
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning around.

Well on his way, his head in a cloud,
The man of a thousand voices, talking perfectly loud.
But nobody ever hears him,
Or the sound he appears to make.
And he never seems to notice .....

But the fool on the hill,
Sees the sun going down.
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning around.

And nobody seems to like him,
They can tell what he wants to do.
And he never shows his feelings,

But the fool on the hill,
Sees the sun going down.
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning around.

I have my RL pic on my profile so no one will be disillusioned by thinking I look like my AV hehe

I also DJ so my voice has already been heard, voice just enables me to hear voices of others

ppl whom I never once thought I would get a chance to converse with because I tend to not butt into conversations ended up becoming friends, new friends but friends none the less, all through voice. and I think we will remain friends because of the ability to convey our personalities via voice and have things in common

some will not like voice and that is fine, others such as myself will enjoy voice and that is fine too

I just dislike reading posts that (to me) try to make me feel guilty or badly for wanting to and for using voice...

I do not ignore text chat, I can multi task I will still chat with ppl in text even if they are not in voice :)

Important point, yes. Just as important, a non voicer should not be made to feel he is being disingenuous, or dishonest by his choice, and should not have to defend it.

brenda very true and I hope that I never make a non voice user feel that way

I know it is not for everyone and I would not dream of making someone feel badly cuz they do not use voice.

I do not come to the forums and rave about voice cuz I do not want ppl to feel as though I am shoving it at them, but truth be told, I love voice and I love the chance to converse with like minded people, however if they choose to not use voice, doesn't mean I will not text chat with them

I hope to god I am making sense LOL
and yes I ramble on endlessly on voice too (there is a reason my husband nicknamed me Rambling Rha

hehe

never! you sound lovely. i wouldn't say i was 'anti-voice'. i just have reservations about it. whatever my views, you're entitled to yours, and if I ever made you feel bad for expressing it...well...i'd feel pretty crappy about myself.

and Brenda - what a very appropriate Beatles track! ;)

I'm curious to see how widespread the vox feature will be...and what that'll mean for me wandering around a landscape of text-silent zombies, gesturing away. Perhaps, then...I'll have an *inkling* of what it may mean to be deaf in RL. *smile*
I'm also curious about how people will react to the "texties" among them...if they'll be annoyed by the text pop-up on the screen, when one of us neaderthals decides to post something....kinda like the irritation I feel when my group IM's just won't shut the hell up, regardless of how often I "leave" a session.
I share the reservations of those a bit suspicious about vox...but, I can see the inevitable, glacial approach of the juggernaut anyway. Soon enough it'll be ubiquitous...and we'll either adapt...or fade away to living lives of mute desperation, lurking in the shadows, watching...waiting...ostracized by this once-egalitarian virtual society. Scrabbling to survive, we'll form into gangs of wild, squatting avi's, lean and hungry-eyed, living in the sewers, sleeping on the heating grates, and reduced to mere digital shadows of our former selves.
But...one day...using a clever network of group-IM's through a twisted network of alt accounts and with the aid of a few, sympathetic "talkies"...we will rise up. An army of silent, angry zombies that will begin a reign of subtle, mute terror the likes of which the metaverse has never witnessed.

Or not.

very very reserved about voice...

firstly, not english speaking, several years ago i gave it a try with TS in eve, didn`t understand much of it with all the accents and when i spoke, they couldn`t make out much of it either and had to type it in corp or group chat, had it muted nway with the rant i wanted to hear all day and just listen to music

griefing will be unprovable and unsure if they`ll ever get the sound distance set so u dont hear 1 person from the otherside of the region or 50m away
also with all the non english ppl in here, most of it wouldn`t be understandable and just be annoying like hell

enabling it for my tenats or i`d just skip it at all
SL is to escape reality abit with daily doings, atleast ppl get tired of typing at a point, use voice and u`ll just get an headake after half a day

i like my peace&quiet and intend to keep it that way, voice, never :)

yah im waiting for it to be added to main viewer. No specific reason other then no one else is using voice right now so im not feeling pressure to change my game.
