My question is people are selling illegal lindens on Ebay why are they allowing Ebay to even do it in first place?

Well, no one can really stop eBay from allowing people to sell L$ if they want, it's upto eBay to decide what they will allow. However, as a general rule, eBay seem to take quite an ethical approach to what they will allow, so if this sort of thing continues, expect eBay to announce that they will start removing all sales of L$ from their site.

Just a thought.... what would happen if someone with "illegal" money (illegal because it was bought from another source than the LindeX?) walked into my store and bought products worth hundreds of thousands L$? Would LL lock me out and steal my revenue, for being the recipient of "bad bytes"?

that issue bothers me too. I can't control who buys stuff.

Anshe Cheung got her account frozen for trying to start her own currency, I think.

Black market currency gets people arrested RL. How is this any different?

I do empathise tho. Not being able to buy Linden until yesterday was severely knocking over my bees.

(No ... I don't know what that means either ... so don't ask me ... make it up ... go hog wild with it)

Do Not Buy L$ On Ebay
06-21-2007 09:18
It seems that every day I read about someone else getting their lindens removed and their account optionally disabled.for receiving stolen L$.

In every case, they purchased the money on ebay or used an unapproved exchange.

Sometimes Linden Lab will take back more than was received resulting in a negative balance that the resident then has to pay back to even get back to a zero balance.

As far as I can work out, all Lindens for sale on ebay are fraudulent. I can't see any reason why anyone would sell them there as there is the Lindex and SLExchange for trading currency at the best prices.

The worst thing about this is that the scammers and fraudsters are profiting from it. When LL take back the Lindens, the scammers still get to keep the real money and the scam is worth continuing. This means the scammers will continue to obtain lindens by fraudulent means, whether it is hacking people's Second Life accounts using keyloggers or pickpocket scripts or brute forcing passwords or using stolen credit card information to buy them.

If you buy lindens on ebay you are ensuring that this sort of activity will continue and the hacks will get worse and more frequent as its an easy way to illegally make money. I really think we should have a blog post or sticky topic to let everyone know the risks of using ebay for this.

Well, if you knocked over a bee, it would get angry and the consequences would be dire, as it would get all it's bee friends to gang up on you. Therefore the phrase implies that not being able to buy lindens made you angry and could lead to unfortunate consequences for the party responsible for angering you. However, bees die if they sting you (sometimes) so that also means that your rage will have unfortunate consequences for you too.

Yes, that sounds good.

Yes, it's pretty much the same as buying gold in World of Warcraft and thus supporting the gold farmers and people who steal accounts.

Not everyone reads forum.
LL needs to make official post notifying people where it is safe to buy Lindens and not who has the right to do so, who doesn't.
Btw the last time I looked at Ansche website the one with her forums she was advertising her own money still. Wonder if it changed because that was over six months ago?
