Technical changes to the new Support Portal made it necessary for us to change some passwords. If you have not already done so, please go to the website and reset your password. If you are unable to, you may call us at 866-476-9763. International residents may file a ticket through the guest login and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you
Linden Lab Support

am i correct by assuming that LL is using a 3rd party help center and that our passwords are now being strethced across multiple websites?

Or am i just really confused about whats going on.

I agree. I can't understand why a third-party website is telling me to reset my password when such a request should originate from Linden Lab itself especially as Linden Lab has warned us in the past not to trust requests regarding passwords from third-parties.

Guess we'll just have to wait for Linden Lab to make a clarification on the blob.

It's also interesting to note that per the e-mail "international residents" are encouraged to submit a support ticket using the same possibly-breached/possibly-malfunctioning support system though we have no idea as to why we need to change our passwords other than we had the misfortune of using the Support Portal. Does this mean we have to reset our passwords everytime we use this "support" system?

They need to go ahead and allow us to use separate passwords for the grid/website and the JIRA/Solution Portal. Period.

Which is basically what I said in a reply email. This would prevent issues occurring if say, they need to deactivate/change the password system for the Solution Portal. We'd still be able to get onto the grid. And visa versa.

Which of course, failed.

Uhh... that would actually make sense and as it makes sense it would be contrary to the standard Linden Lab policy of treating customers like mushrooms: Keep us in the dark and cover us with... eh... you can figure out the last word on your own.

The above quoted e-mail is actually the last straw for me. There's been far too many problems in far too short a time for me to believe that Linden Lab has any idea what customers are (we give them money) and how we should be treated.

Funny that LL is paying these guys for some sort of service and they don't even know how to spell their own client's name:

Why is the e-mail "LindenLabs@parature.com" when the name of the company is Linden Lab (singular)?

Maybe because of the law suits, Linden Lab sold everything to Linden Labs?

for those curious about the full headers of this email...

other than editing the domain part of my email in the received field, this full email with headers has been left alone.

from a quick review, this almost seems like a spoof email, and with no word from LL about all this, I am unsure about this entire password issue.

That's very funny. What makes it hilarious is that my support ticket never did result in a resolution to my request and now I have to change my password (again).

All I've learned from this experience is to never use the "Support" Portal again.

I received three copies of that same email - several days too late, of course, as I've already been through the password change.

Agreed, it does look very fishy but I do think its genuine. Now all we need to do is figure out quite what it was went wrong to cause it in the first place.

A blog post would be a good start.

LL has to really let us know what is going on.

parature.com
Help Desk Software Solution, Customer Service & Support Software

dunno if it will help anyone but a few days ago LL wouldnt accept my PW so instead of going and trying to reset it myself I clicked on 'Forgot Password' I had to give a answer to a verification question then they sent me a email giving a link to change my PW I made the change just the same as the old one and Ive had no further problems.

At a first look, it's good old Phishing. At a second look, parature does
'Help Desk Software Solution, Customer Service & Support Software'.
But why should we trust them ? I dont. Passwords are a Matter of LL
and myself. Nobody else.

Aww, and here I thought I would be the first to post about this. Missed it by *this* much... :p

If it were Phishing, they would have a link to go to to enter your login info. Since there is no link given, I take it to be real, but they probably forgot to configure their own email adddress, so it defaulted to the one displayed.

It doesn't matter whether or not any of us think the message is "genuine." What matters is such a request needs to originate from Linden Lab.

well if it's phishing it's a poor attempt as it tells you to go to the site but doesn't give you some random IP link for a webpage.
Upon getting this email and trying to login to my account only to find my password isn't accepted so I've reset.. I believe it's a valid email. People get busy doing work and sometimes one group gets ahead of the other. I'm sure LL will post something up about it.

It is a valid request to fix some problem they encountered last night - but they have chosen a strange way to notify us all, using an outside company, and not explaining it on the blog.

I crashed last night. When I tried to log back in, the login page said that due to support changes, I would need to reset my password. Of course, the directions they gave me to follow did not work. No big surprise there. I figured it out on my own, and they sent me an email so that I could reset my password. Fortunately it worked right away for me, but I had to do some digging on my own to figure out how to do it. My friend crashed, and got the same message, and she could not get back in for hours. And then my husband wasn't asked to change his password at all, and encountered no problems using his account.

Customer service, anyone?

Added on edit: do you think I have to do it again, since the emails were sent today, and I reset my password last night? And why did they take 3-4 hours to appear in my inbox after being sent? Although that may be a gmail problem. Who knows.

Dunno.. since Gmail is pretty good at letting things go through after a quick virus scan. Maybe it was backed up from all the other accounts getting the mail?

A few months back when they notified a limited number of people that their credit cards might have been compromised and that they better get in touch with their bank, they also used a third party to send that email.

The first few posts mocked it as a phising attempt until it later turned out the email was indeed official.

They've definitely farmed out the support, and one hand doesn't know what the other is doing. It's also clear that the support-vendor is more interested in closing tickets than they are in solving problems. Check this:

I had the password reset problem, and before we solved it here, I had put in a support ticket. I finally got my answer a few minutes ago. My graphics card is not supported, so there's nothing they can do. Of course, the graphics card has nothing to do with it, and thanks to the people here, I was only out of world for a short time. If I was depending on LL Bangalore, I'd be screwed.

Are they going to try and tell me that my stipend didn't get paid because of the graphics card? Are they deliberately keeping the support people in the dark about the password issue - or are the support people just retards?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Ticket Description
Summary: Can't log in

Details: I can log on with alt account. It appears that my account name has been corrupted because the system logged me in here as Giannia Rossini Rossini. I can still access my account info and forums. I last logged in around 3pm sl time. The client seemed ok, but when I rebooted my machine, and started the client again, a crash report was generated for a previous crash.

(6/6/2007 5:13 PM EDT) Hi,

Thanks for your inquiry,

Unfortunately your crash reports or logs show that your graphic card, ATI MOBILITY RADEON XPRESS 200, is not supported, or at best not tested, as listed there: http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php

What you could is to visit your manufacturer's website and update your drivers to the latest [yadda yadda]

Well it looks like the email is real (after some digging). Parature is a Helpdesk and Support site, and it looks like LL have started to use them for handling support.

What is scary about this is the *lack of any word* from LL about what has happened, the *similarities to last year* when we last had to reset our passwords, and that the location that we are logging into and providing private Second Life details is *an external site* to LL (ie. NOT Linden Labs, unless they have purchased this company too, without telling anyone).

PLEASE can someone show me where I have made a mistake, because if I haven't then this is very troubling news.... No word, an external company, and password resets. Make up your own minds about what you think this means, I know what I think...

The site that we go to to get support now is support.secondlife.com IP( 63.236.106.150 ).
parature.com is IP( 63.236.109.204 ).

Now we do a reverse lookup on these addresses to find out who *really* owns them:

parature.com = [ 63.236.109.204 ]
CustName: Parature Inc.
Address: 11600 Sunrise Valley Drive
Address: Suite 470
City: Reston
StateProv: VA
PostalCode: 20191
Country: US
RegDate: 2004-09-21
Updated: 2004-09-21

support.secondlife.com = [ 63.236.106.150 ] (CNAME=d3.parature.com)
CustName: Parature Inc.
Address: 8201 Greensboro Drive
Address: Suite 610
City: McLean
StateProv: VA
PostalCode: 20120
Country: US
RegDate: 2006-05-03
Updated: 2006-05-03

Both are hosted at Qwest Cybercenters, whereas www.secondlife.com is

secondlife.com = [ 66.150.244.169 ] (Note: One of the load balancers)
CustName: Linden Lab
Address: 577 Second St.
Address: Suite 200

which is through Internap Network Services.

This e-mail is confusing for me. I too got that e-mail. and from the words they use, I get the impression that *they* changed some passwords. "Technical changes to the new Support Portal made it necessary for us to change some passwords."

Then they ask me to change the password "If you have not already done so, please go to the website and reset your password."

But my account still works, and my password was not reset. And after reading all the password change problems, I think twice before I change anything.

I got my alt's password changed (obviously this one I am using now), but not my main account's (the old one didn't work, I checked). I just wonder when they will answer the support ticket I sent, since I really don't feel like paying for my main's premium and land tier if I am not able to log her in. Kind of warm welcoming back to SL after my internet connection was broke for few days from my end.
