Thought I'd add some good news to the thread for anyone thinking of getting one of the GeForce 8800 cards- Sometime around April or May of 2007, Nvidia is supposedly releasing the GeForce 8300 and 8600s. The estimated price of the higher end 8600s is expected to be about $180.

So there's some good news for those who want a bleeding edge card without the high price tag! ;)

oh this just saved me money i got the bleeding edge mother board and the bleeding edge ram and CPU but only a 7900 video card (i skimped ..) and was waiting to get the video card when i saw oo i need like 800 watt power supply too? bah okay well then lets wait and see for another month as well. My power supply is 600 but i'm not sure its good enough for these 8800 cards which also require 1 meg of ram minimum onboard in order to operate hehe

now what will be the difference between 8300-8600 and an 8800? it can't just be price tag can it? if so i will get two and use dual cards everything else is "dual" might as get cards to match hehe

The 8800GTS only requires a 400W power supply. I am running on a 550W PSU.

Before you spend money on a motherboard, buy more RAM to upgrade to at least 2GB. Unless your existing mobo is maxed out, and you HAVE to buy a new one before you can get more RAM. I would expect memory to be a much bigger bottleneck for you right now than the CPU or motherboard are.

1GB is only barely adequate for SL these days under Windows XP. Vista is more memory-hungry, so I would expect 1GB to be inadequate. It's really pretty easy to tell if your computer has a hard disk light; if the light shows more than an occasional brief flicker when you run SL, you don't have enough RAM. The occasional flickers will be SL hitting the disk cache. More than that means the system is hitting the swap file, which you never want it to do if you can possibly avoid it.

I installed another 1GB of RAM a few days ago and now my computer will slow down if I'm in SL for more than 30 minutes at a time then speed back up after a few minutes and there has been very little improvement in the fps of SL. I even went and uninstalled and re-installed SL and it still has the same problem.

Help

I have a super charged system with a Geforce 8800 dual core chip etc etc runs like lightning on everything but in SL about once every 15 min it feels like my frame rate drops to 1per sec then takes about 1 min to regain itself. Are there any setting I should consider to fix this? I cannot figure out what is wrong. This never happens with my 3year old setup.

This is an update to my post above:

A couple of days ago I took out my 8800 GTS video card and put in my old card, a 6800, and now the slowdown has stopped. So I'm guessing it is my motherboard that is the problem. The next time I am able to I'll be getting a new motherboard and might also have to get some more memory since mine is only DDR RAM unless I can find a motherboard that takes it. All I can find, so far, are motherboards that take DDR2 RAM which is probably what I need to get anyway.

Update: After some research I found the solution. Using DriveCleaner I was able to clean out all of my drivers and get it to working well.

Second PC From CyberPower damaged
04-11-2007 12:05
Just thought I'd drop a line to let everyone know that the 2nd PC from CyberPower arrived in worse shape than the 1st one!

I even tried to reset the Graphics Cards that were jarred out of their PCI slots in a hopefull attempt to get the PC working. WRONG! After being on with CyberPower Support for almost 2 hours, there were so many error messages that we were never able to get the PC to boot up! The Tech felt that the hard drive was damaged along with some motherboard issues.

I have requested and already received a full refund! Needless to say, now I'm totally gun shy as to ordering any other PC that has to be shipped! CyberPower evidently is use to this kind of thing because it evidently didn't rattle any one in the Tech support or Customer Service departments. No apploigies were given and their attitude was more or less,,, "ah well,, these things happen some times!" So much for dealing with CyberPower in the future!

For now I'll just stay with my slow PC and maybe,,, just maybe, I'll buy a new PC from a local vendor that I can pick up myself!
