From: entropy Nikolaidis You folks do understand that the folks that work on the asset servers are not the same types of people that work on features such as Voice Chat, right? It's not like if Linden Labs decided to drop voice now it would result in a massive manpower freeup allowing them to repair all the problems we've grown to know and love. With all respect entropy, you don't know what you are talking about. I am a software development manager. If I have a system in major disrepair, and I have a bunch of people working on esoteric features and not enough working on the real problems, I have to make some tough choices ... like laying off the people that are working on less than critical systems so I can put more resources onto the real issues. This is long over due.

From: entropy Nikolaidis Hey, I hate to tell you this, but you can trust me, i'm a PC tech.
Something is wrong with your computer.
If you are not exagerrating becuase you are upset at the grid problems (and who is not!) then you have something really weird going on. If you are crashing every 15 mins, you have a problem, and it has *nothing* to do with the Second Life client. There's 4 PC's here in my home, all running different configurations (Vista, XP, 2000) with totally different hardware. One of them is really old, one really new, one kinda in between. They all run SL just fine, I crash occassionally but never more then once a day generally. The only time i've seen some serious crash action from SL is when I happen to be using the First Look Client.
Anyway, crashing every 15 mins = not the grid. Drop me a IM in game, I can give you a few pointers and perhaps help you solve the problem. Thanks Entropy, and honestly I thought that too but I've got a guy sitting across from me that is a computer guru and he's torn our network apart looking for any issues. All our computers are running different configurations and not all of our characters are having an issue.. only two of our characters crash constantly.. you can run those characters on any one of the 8 computers here and they crash constantly.. but run any of the others and they stay online for hours without crashing no matter what computer they are on. Unfortunately for me, the character that is crashing constantly for me is the one I use for business / building / and running the sim =( So its totally pooched me from being able to get anything done. And others on the sim are having the same issue. I just donno anymore and I'm honestly tired of trying to trouble shoot LL's mess for them =P I'll give you an IM in game just to make sure we've covered all the bases here but short of buying new network hardware, we've done everything we can think of and our network hardware is almost brand new so I see no reason to change it out. and.. I still can't log in LOL

This is long over due. No disrespect taken. I also work in the IT field, and the guys that I work with, we handle new access point setup for the network we run. Other guys are hired to do database management, other guys are hired for programming, etc. I understand the concept of laying off people that are working on non-critical functions to free cash to increase the number of man hours you can put into resolving critical problems, I just don't think it's relevent here. I'm just taking a stab in the dark here, but from what I can tell the problems that Linden are facing now are the really annoying kind -- the kind that involve their programmers and database developers pouring over line after line of code, and lots of work finding choke points on the network and moving servers around to distrib the load better. I'm resonably sure if we took a look at Linden Labs budget for the month, we'd find that the amount of money getting funneled into the rollout of voice just does not compare at all to the amount of money getting spent on critical repairs and upgrades to improve grid stablity. VOIP technology is simply not *that* complicated. All i'm saying is that Linden Labs firing / laying off / moving the few folks that are working on voice features is not gonna make much of a difference at this point.

and.. Drop me a IM, i'll give you a few ideas that your resident guru might have missed. Also, I know this sounds like a silly silly question, but on the characters that crash regardless of which PC they play from: Have you tried removing *all* attached objects (espically HUD attachments) and all scripted objects from those characters?

I wonder how many Lindens are on salary as opposed to hourly? If those salaried people are staying over their weekend, right now's gotta SUCK for them...

The point isn't that Linden Lab needs to lay anybody off right now. What they needed to do a long time ago is make the appropriate investment in people on infrastructure. These problems have existed for a long time. You are new here. Talk to me in a few years, when you have as much invested here as some of us do. Telling us to chill isn't helpful entropy ... honestly. We know more than you think we do.

The crosschat information was actually something he and I hashed around as a possible problem but (smirks with womanly "i told you so"-itis) he didn't think that could be a possible problem with SL so we never pursued it. I'm still trying to log in.. and this actually would make sense because I started to log in and his character crashed.. then I crashed to desktop and he logged back in and now I'm stuck still unable to log in LOL. At any given time I can have more than one character logged in and so does he.. add to that my son logging in as well on the Teen grid and maybe we just have gridlock going on here. I have tried the attachment removal, but he hasn't. He's trying it now but it really didn't improve anything for me i'm afraid Oh hey look! i'm logging in.... And.. he crashed.. lol /me bangs head on desk a few times and gets hammered by Captain Morgan (and by hammered I mean drunk and by Captain Morgan I mean Yummy Pina Colada! so get yer minds out of the gutter =D)

I managed to log in and talk to entropy for my usual 10 minutes or so, then crashed and now I can't get back in lmao. So Entropy, if you are seeing this post.. thank you very much for trying so hard to help us with this mess. We are trying those suggestions now, or will as soon as SL allows.
I have no idea when i'll be able to get back in, the blog says logins are still restricted.
/me plugs blender in right next to computer for ease in getting hammered by Captain Morgan

From: Persephone Milk Thank you FD. I am sure it will be okay. I mean that. And I am sorry that I am whining so much. I will try to be positive. I'm positive, too! I'm positive that things are throughly pooched!

From: entropy Nikolaidis Yo, the grid = often messed up before voice. the grid = often messed up after voice. You folks do understand that the folks that work on the asset servers are not the same types of people that work on features such as Voice Chat, right? It's not like if Linden Labs decided to drop voice now it would result in a massive manpower freeup allowing them to repair all the problems we've grown to know and love. Blaming voice for current problems is akin to blaming Mega Casinos for lag. It's a wives tale, it has no basis in reality, and it's not helping anyone. Too bad you gave up so quick. grid is back online. login server seems fine @ 10:34. Less then 30 mins downtime. I know it's frustrating, but try to take a deep breath Inventory/building has been screwing up at *least* since March and getting worse, so I don't blame voice. And it's funny how that lag is just as god-awful even with the Casinos gone -- sort of an eye-opener, that.

Really Disappointed
08-11-2007 00:08
I just woke up and try to log on to Second Life.. after waiting at the 'Second Life may appear frozen please wait..' or whatever it says, I finally managed to get in. I got in and I was ruthed, my inventory was completely empty (NOT ONE FOLDER!) and then, my avatar disappeared completely.. just had the orb above my head for voice and I was completely invisible.
Now I have cleared cache and am trying to get in and it says 'Second Life logins are temporarily being restricted for your account due to maintenance being performed. Sorry for the inconvenience.'
If I've lost all my items that I have paid for, I will not be happy.. had no problems before they started to fiddle again. I am getting so very annoyed that we all pay out money for something that doesn't work well a lot of the time.. and why do we do it? Because we've all got sucked in.
I usually don't complain about these things and just figure 'Oh, it's Second Life.. things don't work again.. that's nothing abnormal.' However, I've never logged onto a clean inventory.. I'm praying that my stuff will show up again when they have fixed whatever maintenance they apparently are doing.
I think I'll stop whining now, at least I have managed to voice frustration to you guys.. I bet the Lindens don't even read what we put up here though.
Anyways, anyone else experiencing problems? I read through this thread before posting and read a couple of other people have had the inventory loss problem (I hope all our items return unharmed!)
*** WooT, had these problems.. now managed to get in.. inventory appears unharmed and my avatar is present! I hope everyone else in this thread managed to get in and had no further problems when getting back in..***

If the Lindens set out to deliberately destroy SL and turn every resident against them they couldn't have done a better job.
In just 12 months LL have managed to completely flush all the goodwill residents used to hold towards them down the toilet.

This folder does not get completely cleared out on clearing the cache from game prefs, nor does it get wiped on uninstall and reinstall. I have seen several difficult problems solved by deleting all the contents of this folder and letting SL rebuild it on the next start.

My inventory problems persisted though this morning.
I contacted Data Linden and he offered help. He took care of my duplicate folders, had me go to Cyclops (a completely empty sim), clear my cache and relog. During the login, I saw a message "Performing Account Maintenance" or something similar. My duplicate folders were fixed. Then, I did a simple inventory search and my entire inventory reloaded. The only problem I saw after that was that I still had a number of odd items in my Lost and Found folder (activated gestures).
Thank you so much Data Linden!
