That's true. When files have been modified to suit the needs of the particular forum, you can't just upgrade the whole forum. You have to go through any new files that replace the modified ones, and make the same modification to them. That's *if* the same modifications work with the replacement files. If they don't, then the modifications have to be worked out again. It's nowhere near as straight forward simply upgrading the software.

How many files? I manage technically some forums, one with high traffic and I do not deny that it is not easy, but doing tests on another server, controlling and performing the update itself, I just took no more than 4 days to do so.

The update process itself, after the necessary tests performed, demand as much, putting the forum off line no more than 4 hours. Let's say there's a drawback, one day offline, but no more than that and being pessimistic.

So, I think that LL can update this forum with only two operators and no problems.

SaludOS/2

PS: Next week, as every year, coincidentally, I will start testing to update the largest forum in view of its fifth anniversary on 26 February.

I've had a phpBB forum for a lot of years, which I made modifications to. I stopped upgrading because it was too much of a hassle to make sure that all the mods worked ok. Upgrading forums is fine as long as you don't modify it.

The current vBulletin as used by SLU/SCII etc. seems to do pretty much everything very well without any significant changes other than adding some themes. I think that almost everyone would put up with having to login twice here in order to get truly great forum software. They could work on the integrated login at a more leisurely pace. I mean there are no integrated logins yet for XStreet or the Blogs.

Personally, I would plump for great software with one glaring deficiency rather than mediocre software with a multitude of deficiencies.

Ultima Online doesn't have official forums. The reason is the management grew tired of users complaints and they took them down. They transferred control to a 3rd party for a time, stratics IIRC.

That didn't do them any good but at least they can sleep at night.
