I received this watch notification today from JIRA: Yoz Linden resolved WEB-1185. ----------------------------- Resolution: Under Advisement Unfortunately, it's not that simple. The forums have been modified to enable SL login and other features, which means every upgrade requires patching work. Maintaining third-party software has been an ever-more-painful thorn in our side - the plan is to move these responsibilities to external vendors. Please watch out for an upcoming blog post on the topic. > Official SL Forums - Update vBulletin Software > ---------------------------------------------- > > Key: WEB-1185 > URL: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-1185> Project: 3. Second Life Website - WEB > Issue Type: New Feature > Components: forums.secondlife.com > Environment: Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc > Reporter: oryx tempel > Priority: Major > > Rather than recreating the Forums using a new and different software, I suggest that Linden Lab cough up the $60 to upgrade/update vBulletin software to 3.8.3 from its current 3.0.5. Intriguing n'est pas? I wonder who the external vendor might be.

If what Yoz says is true, it seems pretty obvious that the Blog/forum software is being acknowledged as inadequate to be a full forum replacement. That at least is good to hear.
I have learned not to be even cautious optimistic about LL's web efforts however, there is an outside chance the forums might end up in a better state than exists today.

LL have never been on-time with expected blog postings as far as I can remember. I expect there is an announcement in the works - when it will arrive is anyone's guess I suppose.

I'm wondering if Avatars United is going to be the alternative/external vendor.
Although since AU is now part of SL...how external is that?

From: Gabriele Graves That was my first thought too but I didn't say it for exactly the same reason - they are not exactly external even at this point. I'm assuming that AU is still operating as a individual entity, even though they are now owned by LL. So in that sense calling them an external vendor might still make sense. I think this is another case of "what they said" is black and white, "what they meant" is anyone's guess.

A couple more forums-related jiras with activity today: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-1448, "Highlight posts by Linden Lab employees and forum moderators" filed by Yoz today, with Yoz assigned, for both forums.secondlife.com and blogs.secondlife.com. Description: "Forum and comment threads currently highlight posts made by the creator of the thread. It'd be really useful if comments by Lindens and by forum moderators could also be highlighted." Yoz's Comment: "This is currently being implemented for the next major release." http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-1329, "Login in to forums results in 404", Yoz resolved today with comment: "Resolving Won't Finish, as we'll be moving to OpenID for sl.com and forums login, which will solve this problem. Although since AU is now part of SL...how external is that? By Linden Logic(tm) it may very well be. AU is in another country and has their own staff I presume, so they could be considered external. Once again however, LL makes reference to an announcement regarding these forum.....in a place other than these forums. What gives, it's like a child being talked about while it is still in the room. Will they not even have the courtesy to come in here on last time to serve the eviction papers? Are they that classless?* *Rhetorical.

I think AU people will become responsible for the event calendar and the forum. I think the event calendar accessible in Second Life will dissappear soon.

From: Gabriele Graves Unfortunately, it's not that simple. The forums have been modified to enable SL login and other features, which means every upgrade requires patching work. That's true. When files have been modified to suit the needs of the particular forum, you can't just upgrade the whole forum. You have to go through any new files that replace the modified ones, and make the same modification to them. That's *if* the same modifications work with the replacement files. If they don't, then the modifications have to be worked out again. It's nowhere near as straight forward simply upgrading the software.

Given how often they update the forums software, I'm not sure I buy that "we have to do work on every update" is a very good excuse.

From: someone Transition For The Forums On Tuesday, February 9th we're transitioning our forums, from the vBulletin software we've been running for years to the integrated Clearspace software which can currently be found at http://blogs.secondlife.com. This transition will mean that new forum channels will be opened on Clearspace and the vBulletin forums will be closed and archived. We understand that the forum community might feel some angst during this transition, but hope that you will understand the necessity and advantages of such a move...please read on. https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/community/blog/2010/02/01/upgrading-the-forums
