There were so many options that the users put forward to Linden Labs about the forums, including outsourcing the moderation. But as usual, 'with regrets' and 'because it isn't scalable' they closed many of the forums. So far, the only thing I have seen as 'not scalable' has been Linden Labs. This baffles me, since my first second-life is World of Warcraft- with a significantly larger population base- and official forums. Admittedly the general WoW forums are a cesspit of insanity- but they do, in fact exist and I think it's healthy for the community to have an outlet- even a flawed outlet- where they can be certain that the "blues" (Community reps, developers, and other official people) are at least browsing through. That said, WoW has a healthy base of unofficial forums- some of which are regularly browsed by developers and community managers- but the official forums and specifically a general forum needs to exist as a base for new users to get questions answered and maybe to filter off the higher IQ posters to someplace more tolerable through the community. All that said, if Linden Labs intends to attract businesses- it's bad looking to have a general forum teeming with idiocy trolls and griefers. Moderation is key and required. Frankly funneling all the moderation into one general forum for new posters and letting the smaller topical forums be moderated by volunteers would seem ideal for presenting the right image on a budget. I don't understand why they think it's more attractive to have to have shut down your general forums (which any new poster can find out with a simple question- it was certainly one of my first questions) rather than hiring the 2-3 full time people to heavily moderate it. |

This forum isn't for general discussion; there are many Resident Sites where this discussion is appropriate — Resident Answers is for Resident-to-Resident help. I'll close this thread... Another fine example of just how much the resident opinion in valued. Take it off our pretty pink sanitized forums..we don't want to hear you. (can see the lock and purge coming already) Yesterdays news. The residents answers Forum still ends up general discussion because even when we are asking questions of one another on other than purely technical matters, Opinions vary widely, and a cewrtain amount of discussion, and clarification is necesary. They let us go pretty far afield in Asking for opinions on things, setting up Polls to get a Clearerer picture of how opinions are spread, I think what LL has asked for, and By and large received, is an end to the Massive Flame wars that peppered the old general forums. They Listen when Opinions are reasonable, and Reasonably presented, what they don't Listen to (And who really can blame them) is Floods of abuse. Look at some of the topics that have Gone on here in the past weeks/Months, and NOT been Locked. We ARE getting our say, and the Lindens Are obviously monitoring, or those over-the-Line Threads that have been locked would still be Running. If you want a Forum where you can Flame with Impunity, this isn't it, But if you have something reasonable to add here, it Seems to be More than welcome. Angel. |

Phillip Linden said the general discussion areas here were closed because his employees were getting depressed by them. they should have been and still should be depressed about the sheer amount of complaints twards their product, we all know its great thats why we are here, but at the same time its like watching someone choke your pet, you love it and cant stand it when its being harmed sl is sorta this way we (for the mostpart) all love it, but it could be sooo much better, the lindens try hard, and work hard to make it better and fresh, but at the same time theres a long list of crap that just never gets fixed thus choking the fun out of it one such example was texture rounding, alot of ppl including me, started using texture sheets, this drasticly reduces database fetches and transfer times to help with the texture loading issues, its a common - old practice, and it makes total since, if it didnt it wouldnt be an industry standard practice linden labs sometime last year botched the offsets for textures, which means you couldnt do texture texture sheets of any decent quality , becuase you could never get the stupid things lined up anywhere close to where you needed them ... almost a year later it was (sorta) fixed with a last min addition to a 2 week patch if stuff like this is sooo ez to fix at the last moment, why did it take a year, why did they let us bitch and complain for a year ? i can see why the developers were depressed, their bosses are pushing for NEW and IMPROVED while reading endless "we hate you" comments over stupid crap that should be a quick fix i very rarley bitch directly at a dev, the last time i did the improvements i complained about were quickly fixed (in the ui, such as leaving camera controls up after logoff, ui resizing ect) since then ive always pointed my finger at the management the same management who closed the GD forum and expected noone to just migrate to somewhere else, the same ones who basicly cut off all customer-company contact, and the same ones that push for NEW SHINY features over bug fixing if they want less bitching, maby they should get over their moods and actually read and try to understand the consumers fustration, becuase in the end i dont give a crap about lindenX having a bad day, i care about the fact i havent been able to upload a texture in 2 weeks on a service i pay for |

Isn't that a river in Egypt? That may belong in the Historical Reference Thread. OMG I just had a flash. The BlogPost makes sense now. It wasn't DANIEL Linden...it was DENIAL Linden. ![]() _____________________

The original purpose (which I've reiterated once) here is that it seemed that some threads that were asking legitimate questions were being locked down without an answer ever being given. I mean, its 3 days since the blog, people are screaming for clarification and hiding out afraid that some vigilante is going to pick them as their next target to AR with their pet peeve. Every thread has its hijackers; people who just want to start an argument or twist words to fit their own private agenda. If LL is listening to us, the 'consumer', surely they can see the uproar this vague post has caused; so why haven't they answered? My hope isn't completely gone yet, but every post about people being harrassed and hounded and made to feel inferior by some idiot that just doesn't like the fact that they are short, or have their nose pierced, or doesn't fit into their little mold of what is 'right'[ makes me a bit more jaded. Time will tell.
