I thought I might give religion a go in SL.

Does anyone know of a good one in SL? Not something regurgitated from RL but something original, even surrreal, but not too silly.

Amen.

Church of the Holy Prim?

(if that doesn't already exist, someone needs to start it :) )

If you leave out "silly" then you're really narrowing down the field.

I vaguely remember a blog entry (probably in New World Notes) about an SL church for Elvis worhship. Whether or not that's too silly is, after all, a subjective judgment. :-)

Some one named Doug has a church. I believe it is called "Doug's church. His avatar is dressed like a cleric. He seems open to discussing just about anything. You might try there.

I've been in the Church of Elvis. The Church of Steve too.

lots of fun ones..but 99% of faiths found in sl are in humor. I think I saw a true priest of the FSM though, he was dressed like a pirate.

Well, something like that might be thought of as a cult, lol Do you like role playing and Star Wars? You can buy Force Prophecies (a wonderful role playing, defensive, offensive weapon) for 500L and join all of the Force groups like Force Prophets. I'd say there are about 7,000 people with this gadget. It's a good tool and anti-griefer if anything. They have meetings and meditate together in these Jedi and Sith groups. Just a thought, not so much a religion though.

P.S. You can get this gadget here http://www.slexchange.com

I've heard of the great god Laggnor, and have been told that it is wise to sacrifice prims to him, and go without a lot of fancy stuff less you incur his wrath.

Also, there was once another powerful one named Dwellnor who would reward his followers if they assembled together and worshipped him regularly, but he seems to have disappeared from the world.

Of course, these are all superstitions and I don't really believe in them...

*deletes a few torii prims and checks his client FPS*

I was considering building a temple to the Linden Gods on my land, but have recently reconsidered.

Anyway, if you bring religion to SL you will also bring wars, and surely nobody (or almost nobody) wants that.

There's a church next door to where I'm building an apartment tower. It's called Church of God, says it's non-denominational and it's on IGS Estate sim. I talk to the pastor everyday (he's my neighbor) and he seems like a real nice guy. He put up a sign the other day that said the church is opening on January 28th at 8 pm.

There's a very active Unitarian Universalist fellowship in SL, in Modesta. Services are held Thursday evenings (SL time).

More information is available via in-world search under 'unitarian'.

Friend of mine and I were going to start The Church of the Holy Torus, but, like so many things, the planning of it was sufficient fun to make the doing of it unnecessary.

Thanks for that bit of info! I'm a lapsed Unitarian in RL and perhaps I could get my virtual self back to church if it didn't involve getting dressed up on Sunday morning. :-)

There is a church where they worship Philip Linden. We did this story on it in the M2 back in July:

Philip Linden: Deity?
By ALENZIA EPSILON
Staff writer

What do you get when you cross a bit too much free time, a love of building and scripting, and a good sense of humor? If you’re a member of the Order of Philip Linden, you get the Book of Philip.

The temple of Philip Linden was built/sculpted out of a mountainside
in the Tethys sim, which is home to the Alliance Navy group in Second Life. The leaders of the virtual religion are Charlotte Pierterson and Mazer Ludd — the self proclaimed prophets of Philip. Upon visiting the temple, I was greeted by both the prophets, and one of their loyal followers, Nanao Mahfouz.

One of the most common misconceptions, according to Pieterson, is that they are a cult. “We do not blindly take a passage and guard it for its literal meaning. We enjoy interpreting the writings in the Book of Philip, and applying the lessons we learn in our everyday lives.” She explains, adding, “That’s sorta one thing I would like to distinguish. We have beliefs, but they are not blind.”

At times during the interview, it was difficult to decide if they were
joking, or if they truly believed in the power of “He-Who-Created-Life,” as they have dubbed him. Every time that Philip’s name was spoken, those gathered erupted into a chorus of “Praise Be to The Philip!” until everyone settled down to listen to Mahfouz reciting a favorite story from the Book of Creation, one of many in the Book of Philip (which, as an aside, is green, with a large metal “P” stamped into the front, and is usually worn strapped to the hip).

Mazer Ludd stated the following, when asked about the beliefs of the followers of Philip, and the Book of Philip: “The basic principle of the Philipites is this: Philip created the world in which we reside, and therefore deserves our devout respect.

The Book of Philip is a collection of stories of the Lindens, specifically
Philip. We’re still busy collecting the writings, so it isn’t complete yet.”

Now, without further ado, a selection from the Book of Philip, as
quoted by Nanao Mahfouz:

“In the beginning there was nothing. The Lindens saw this, and it was not good. And so they created the first sim. Onto this sim they extended many more, creating a vast and diverse world. The Lindens looked upon all that they had created, and it was good. But upon this world walked nothing, stood nothing. Until Cory, Ben, and the greatest of them all, Philip, decended from the Heavens and cultivated the land.

"Each of them brought with them a gift for the new world. (“Mysterious is the name of the First Sim,” adds Mazer.)

“Ben created a shape from which all things in this world are created. It was the Prim. It was good, and from it the Lindens made many creations to spread across the world. Cory brought forth the powers of the Script, which controls all that exists.

"The Prim relied on the Script to give it shape and substance. The Script relied on the Prim to give it refuge and to contain it. But Philip created something that would need neither the prim nor the script.

“And thus Philip created the Avatar, a creature standing upright
on two legs, and molded in the image of the Lindens themselves. He breathed life into his creations, and they became the creatures that walk the world today. When Philip returned to the Heavens, the other Lindens were angry that he would dare create a mortal being in the image of the Lindens. Worst of all, he had given it life. This was unacceptable, and the other Lindens banded together against Phillip and his creation.

“They sent down to the world all of the evils that now exist, in order to punish Avatars for the crimes that they had not committed. Lag, sim borders, server crashes, physics limits, and more. Philip saw this and he was dismayed. Thus he decided to give Avatars the hope and joy of the Update. One day Philip snuck up and stole the Update from the other Lindens, and took it and brought it down to the Avatars of the world and said:(Nanao Mahfouz casts one hand to the sky, his voice rising in reverence)

“‘Take this, my children, it will bring you joy and happiness. It is all
I can do to make this world a better place for you.’

“And they took it, and it was good. But for this terrible crime of
stealing the Update, the Lindens took action. They took Philip and imprisoned him on the very top of the Bydalen mountains. There, Ben and Cory were forced by the other Lindens to build and script a giant prim, which Philip would be forced to roll up the mountain for all eternity.

"Once he neared the top, the prim would increase in size and roll him
over, ending up at the bottom of the mountain.

“Fortunately for the Avatars, Philip found a way to circumvent this punishment for a period of time, and create new updates for them. And because of this we have a better world every few months." (Nanao Mahfouz nods, closing the Book and bowing his head.) “Praise be to Philip.”

May the Philip bless you all.

I know of a cult that believes that when you die, your soul goes up on the roof and you can't get it down.
