You win the thread. :D Pornsylvania made me laugh too though.

Since I'm not into anything that even LL would consider adult, I admit I haven't been following this topic too closely. Can someone remind me where the name Ursula came from? I knew it was an unofficial name, but I thought there was some reason to think it would become official.

Well ya see..... there was this board meeting and a Linden was contemplating a huge booger futher contemplation and a scream of UREKA!!!! It shall be named URSULA ... after much applauding the new continent had a name.... all was well exept the booger picker, in a small voice whispered noooo I was naming my booger!!!

It sounds like a tiny tiny town in a quiet corner of the world. Perhaps the rl inhabitants of Zindra have no internet, and LL thought this'd fly under the radar?

If you've ever been to the Silicon Valley, you'd never think ANYWHERE in India, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka could ever qualify as technology-remote. The Silicon Valley is full of H-1 expats from all over South Asia, as well as Americans descended from that region. Beyond that, tech centers are numerous in the South Asian countries.

Chances are, among the people who will read my post by this time tomorrow, will be one American of South Asian ancestry, one expat from South Asia living in the US, and one South Asian living in South Asia.

:)

Now, that all said, I call 'random word generator' for the origins of the name. the problem in a global world however is that no matter what sound you come up, its holy to one crowd, abominable to another, and refers to a goat's hind legs among a third... You cannot win.

I for one would never have managed to guess the Thor reference - but then again, I have no cultural ties to that ethnic-perspective. I'm sure if we kept digging, we could find more 'similar sounding words' or even 'exact matches.'

If were going biblical just make it two continents and name them Sodom and Gomorrah.

.

Sodomy is not a filtered word, so that would work :-)

Come to think of it, Sodomy and Gonorrhea has a certain ring to it *laugh*

Thinking a bit more, I don't expect anyone would be upset if they named their continent after a sexually transmitted disease. The ..ea ending sounds like a
a continent name.

They should have let all the residents being forced to move there to vote on the name.

Maybe it's just me, but Zindra sounds a lot like Indra, which is the codename for the main part of what makes Second Life, viewer, server, userbase, assets... As Xindra is a bit tough to pronounce, Zindra sounds better.

In fact I find this choice to be a sensible one : by adding a letter to the main part of Second Life, LL tells us that we are still "in the loop" and not cast out.

At least that's the way I see it.

You're really clutching at straws over this. Unless it was something blatantly obvious like calling it Mecca I hardly think anyone is going to take offense over what is obviously a couple of random sounds jammed together to form a word.

Personally I liked Ursula but the whole bear thing was a bit offputting since the continent had almost nothing to do with bears (ugh, please don't pipe up big hairy gay guys). Zindra is fine too. Only thing I don't get is why they didn't just call it Zindra from the start. Maybe it took them 2 years to come up with the name.

I see just as many sites calling the town "Zandra" as "Zindra" so maybe LL can obfuscate out of this one.

Too bad "Kodak" was already taken.

Should have been Xindra then - never mind pronouncing it.

Agreed. Although I love the name Sexinthe City. or Naughtylus. Or Rhonda. Let's call the adult continent Rhonda. I know a lot of dirty girls named Rhonda.

On the X thing .....

In Xanadu did Kubla Linden
A stately pleasure-dome decree :
Where Indra, the sacred river, ran
Through sculp-caverns measureless to man
Down to a virtual sea.
So twice five k of fertile sims
With walls and towers and giggled sins:
And there were gardens bright with sinuous thrills,
Where blossomed many an incest-baring tree ;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of debauchery.

That reminds me of an old Welsh joke.

Pep (No, not me; one about going up the Rhondda Valley)

PS The English version involved going up Primrose Hill.

Didn't they name it Ursula after that character on Friends who was the pornstar twin sister of one of the main characters? You know, on account of it being SL's dirty twin and all.

Tateru Nino of Massively seems to concur with this:
http://www.massively.com/2009/06/02/second-life-adult-content-updates-viewers-namechanges-grannie/

"The adult continent is now to be called Zindra instead of Ursula. We can only speculate about the name-change. Some suggest that the original Ursula name was a intentional slight towards Germany's minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, Ursula von der Leyen. Whatever the actual reasoning behind the original name, Zindra seems a little easier to puzzle out. A large part of the software that actually drives Second Life is called Indra. X-rated Indra would be Xindra, but some cultures habitually pronounce a leading X differently, as 'ecksindra' rather than 'zindra'. Spelling it as Zindra both eliminates pronunciation-based confusion and partially obscures an otherwise emotionally-loaded 'X' prefix."

Actually, if you wanted to be Biblical you could have also named it Babylon.

In SL-ish they would be Soddome, Ghamorrah, and Babbilloon.

Wouldn't work. Reminds me too much of a car I had (Honda mechanicals, Rover badge).

Although that car did aid in a pleasant encounter, so I guess it's not utterly inappropriate!
