Buying Land - should I buy for group??

Hi all :)

I'm buying a 1/4 sim of mainland in a day or two (once I decide on a plot!) to build a home & store, I want my rl partner to have pretty much total control over the land as well as me and our sl business partner to have certain abilities such as eject/ban, rez objects, etc. I don't want other residents to be able to rez objects to avoid littering etc.

Having never owned land i'm not entirely sure of the differences between buying land "for me" and buying land "for group", from what i understand it seems buying it for a group would be the way to go, but if I did just buy it "for me" would I still be able to control who can do what as I described above?

Is the only difference between these two methods of buying land that you can control who can do what via group? Is it possible to use a group to control what people can do when the land is not group owned?

Thanks in advance for any help, and sorry if these seem like dumb questions :)

i don't have any quality answers for you, but I do know that you want to make sure you don't sink in RL money and have your SL business partner sell your land out from under you.

good luck.

Hence the reason i want to give them basic abilities they need for day to day business and NOT the ability to sell the land etc ;)

I know this can easily be done with a group just not sure whether the land has to be group owned or not to do this kind of thing.

Yes, it does require group ownership, afaik.

No problem, i'm pretty cautious anyway when it comes to business, but that was good advice for anyone else in a similar situation who might read this and hadn't thought about that possibility :)

Buying for group is best. Be sure to take advantage of buying the 10% extra.

Hi Johnny. Yes, you can create different roles in the group, granting different permissions to each. Just be careful giving certain permissions to anybody you don't know - and who you can't hold accountable - in RL. Another benefit of assigning land to a group is that you are granted 10% extra tier, free of charge.

Actually that's another question, I only recently found out about that how does it work exactly?

Do i just buy the extra 10%, so in this case upto 1638m for group and not have to pay extra tier?

Would be a bummer to buy an extra 1024 and find myself paying 1/2 sim tier :)

Make sure the group has the tier contributed to it first, under the Land and L tab - the full 16732 or whatever that number is. Then buy 16732 plus an additional 1637 (or whatever the closest number is below 1638). If the group does not have the tier contributed first, you may not be able to buy the land for group outright. It's buggy, but that's the way it works.

Yeah sounds like buying for group is the way to go, the 10% is a nice bonus, would be good for buying say a 1024 & 512 in my case that I can join and use for a nice rental to help with tier costs, or just make into a nice little garden and put my building grid at a good height above it for playing with new products and save prims on the main plot :)

Yeah I found that option while I was digging around on the group I created, figured that would be the case :)

Thanks for your help and for confirming the extra 10% thing :)

Don't group it out to someone else. Form your own group, and remember a group needs 2 people so sign up an alt. Land deeded to a group earns a 10% tier bonus (10% more land w/out a bump in tier). A nice little bonus, lets you buy some prim land.

Now, for how to transfer from yourself to your group w/out bumping up your tier for the month....where are those gurus?

The way you do it is to remove the contribution first from the group, then sell to yourself.

There is an option in the About Land menu to Buy for Group. If the Group has the tier to cover the purchase, you pay for the land but the Group Tier covers the monthly cost.

Group land is complex but worth doing. Start small with yourself and an alt. Creating the group costs $L100. Have you and the alt be the owners so you have full abilities. If you already have the land you want to pass to group ownership, in The About Land window, you can deed to the group and also contribute the tier to pay for it. You will continue to pay that amount of tier. If you have no land yet, you and your alt (if you are both premium) can each contribute 512 each without incurring any tier at all. Then you can buy 1024 for the Group without paying any tier. In the Land window in the Group info it will tell you how much land the group owns and how much more it can own without running out of tier.

Start small and take it step by step. I'm still learning too but Group ownership is working for us.

something that's held me back a bit from going to group land- will I have to redo all my stuff that's already out if I want to turn on auto return? that would be a pain =( but the extra tier from going group would let me get another full 512 (I currently have a couple of 16s that I bought out that are screwing it up)

No autoreturn, so long as the items are set to the group that owns the land.

Depends upon whether you were fortunate enough to set your objects to the group you want to deed the land to :) You'll have to check them all anyway I'd imagine, so yes it will be a pain.

A quick question...... if I want to deed my land to group but NOT set auto-return, will any items not deeded to that group be returned?

You don't need to Deed To Group to make items immune to Auto-Return, just set the object's Group Tag. (Group Tag gets set automatically, if you have your avatar's active group set while you're building)

If you don't set Auto Return, nothing will be Auto-Returned. If you want to return "foreign" stuff, but allow Group Tagged prims to remain, build with group tags. (Maybe you want to do this to allow people to un-box stuff from a shop, but make sure their boxes aren't left lying around).

Not everyone had the group before starting to build =P that's my current problem. I have both my shop and my skybox home that I'd have to completely take down and put back up with the tag active because I didn't have the tag before I finished my set up.

If the grid behaves this afternoon I'll probably do it just so it's done =/
