Was I attacked?

I was in an adult sandbox area adjusting my appearance, when all of a sudden I was inside a cage, and then I was flying as if someone had thrown me. I finally landed in a place that looked like the surface of the moon.

What happened? Was I attacked? Why would someone do that? (the sandbox did not note that it was a place for weapons testing)

Sounds like it. Some people are just rude, esp in sandboxes.

Maybe try editing your appearence somewhere more deserted like the bottom of an ocean or really high in the air. Less likely some fool will spot you and harrass you.

Caged and orbited, sounds like. If anything like that happens again in a non-combat area, right-click>Edit on the cage and go to the General tab (you may need to click the 'More' button to see it)...make a note of the owner's name and Abuse Report them.

Mystical Cookie has a HUD called the MystiTool which, among other things, will tell you when an object has collided with you and who owns it. It's not terribly expensive for the numerous things it does, but I think the free version may include the collision warnings as well. In that case, you can just pull up chat history to see who hit you.

You were griefed. It happens occasionally, a lot less than some of the hysteria would lead you to believe. If you get caged, simply TP out or logout if you have to. It's not a big catastrophy. A nuisnace.

I was trying to browse anims at abranimations a few weeks back, a griefer was cageing everyone in the place. Result was lost sales for abranimations, as no one could browse in peace. AR that take time usually resrved for measuring continental drift are no use when he's there, now, and you want to shop, now. I eneded finding what i wanted elsewhere.

Same thing happen to me not long ago and it makes me want to avoid sandboxes. For all the great people I meet on SL, every once in a while you come across these people who just have severe issues with life in general. If I am in a place that I am not supposed to be, then fine be courtious and tell me ... I will leave on my own (I am not here to make enemies). But to throw profanities my way and then cage me within seconds just because by accident I crossed paths with these people? It just goes to show how messed up some people are in this world.

What does this mean?

Abuse Report (AR) the (largely ineffective, and somewhat pointless) system for reporting such things. too many people being arseholes, too few lindens to deal with them, all that happens is you get some automated reply.

It means filing Abuse Reports and getting a result from them - if you do - takes a long, long time. Continents move in relation to the earth as a whole at rates that are measured in inches per century, which is what it feels like when you are waiting for results from filing ARs. Like continental drift, in the very long run filing an AR can have a very powerful effect, but the day you are attacked it is unlikely to have any at all that you can see.

Another method for escaping a cage, if you have a chance (you often do have to act fast), is to click on the cage to get the "sit" command, then click that to sit on the cage. You will be sitting on the cage - on the outside of the cage. I have seen cages that try to charge you money to let you out - DO NOT reward this petty extortion. There are other naughty pranks griefers can play, but caging and "orbiting" (hurling you far, far away) are by far the most common.

Griefers, like the one you encountered, seem to be naughty adolescents - whatever their actual age might be - or people with serious psychosocial disorders. Whether you run into them a lot or a little depends on what places you go to. They like to seek out places where they find a lot of new Residents, because those are the easiest to play nasty tricks on and get away with it. If you go to such places, you will probably encounter them a lot. If you don't, they will probably be fairly rare for you.

It helps to notice the permissions in a location when you first arrive there. Up at the top of your screen, where the location is described, you will (probably) see one or more icons, which indicate "no-push" (the most common one), "no-build," etc. These tell you things visitors cannot do on that land because the landowner can control whether visitors can do those things at all and has chosen to prevent them. No-build will prevent a griefer from caging you like that; unfortunately, it will also prevent anyone from rezzing anything or building good things there, so it is not used in sandboxes.

Probably best for you to avoid public sandboxes until you have more experience in SL. There are private ones, some of which are well-guarded. I can recommend the sandbox on the Isle of Wyrms, which is well-guarded by the people who live on that sim. They pretend to be dragons, but don't worry; they are friendly, vegetarian dragons.

had the same thing happen to me at abranimations as well, and never went back, yep result... lost sales for abranimations.

I wish they would add the ability to AR a person via the pie menu on the person, the steps it takes to AR is annoying and time consuming

Abranimations does have some pretty good anims, and seems ok now. probly a one-off. I won't avoid their store because of greifers, I ilike their stuff too much, but, on that day, i went elsewhere.

A quicker to fill out Ar system wont help that much tbh. You need a faster response to the problem, and this would'nt change much. i tried to contact owner of place, but not online.

I feel SO left out, as I have not even SEEN a cage, much less been caught in one. And I used to hang out in a public sandbox for hours! I've seen prim litter and the giant sim-sized rotating ball o' porn, but that's about it.

Maybe at the next Forum Cartel meeting, someone could cage and orbit me just for fun?

And then ask me for sex in Portuguese. I can never get enough of that!

You can also check under HELP-Bumps, Pushes, and Hits to see who used a script against you. Next time edit in a dressing room. Tete A Pied, and Last Call has them or pick a nicer sandbox like Ferox Tropical Island sandbox. some sandboxes have people there to watch out for greifers
