From: Yosef Okelly It's because they are afraid to admit that deep down they are really furries I've seen many nekos (not all but many) and couldn't help thinking that they were just Furry!Lite. What I don't get is why steampunk, emo, and neko have become virtually synonymous on SL. You can't find a shop for one that doesn't have a grip of goods in one or both of the other categories. From: Yosef Okelly Because it's a fashion fad. I agree there's a lot of that in it. Just like the muscle-bound tattoed men avis and the big-breasted, barely-clothed, high-heel-wearing women, it's a trend that a lot of people latched onto so it's become widely available so it's easy for newbies to get a hold of so it becomes more of a trend... etc. I think part of why neko is so popular is because it blends the emo/goth/punk look with cats without being a full-on cat. People tend to associate cats with grace, beauty, intelligence, mystery, and mischief. SL is about being things you're not in RL. It makes sense that something that makes a person feel clever, fun, and sexy would be really popular. You don't have to understand the roots of the neko or observe the culture behind it to want to don an avatar that makes you feel all those things. I'm actually surprised with all the furry and neko stuff out there that the kitsune (fox hybrid similar to neko) isn't more popular. They sure were on IRC back in the early 90s. I have to say that I've never played a neko or any kind of furry. I have a strange fear of mascots (Disneyland was hell for me as a small child) so I don't find the furry part of SL at all alluring. But I can understand why someone else might, at least where neko are concerned. I have to admit I don't really get the draw of furries, on SL or in RL.

Not all Neko dress like that. *points at self* I also don't consider it 'furry-lite' or a fashion fad. Neko is what I feel most comfortable with in SL...that's it. Damn zombie threads anyway...

You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.
Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

You seem very open to things you don't necessarily 'get'. Love your attitude.

From: Yosef Okelly It's because they are afraid to admit that deep down they are really furries Why do most women wear 6 to 9 inch heels even in a swimsuit on the beach? Why do most men wear tattoos? Why are neko's popular? Because it's a fashion fad. Their cute; they stand out enough to be noticible but not so much as to be glaring; and the cat symbolizes curiosity whichh is a good enough reason as any to wander around SL seeing what there is to see. You kind of took me out of context there, but what the hey. The furry comment was a joke, that's why it ends with a smilie face. A little tease for Clarie, Ann and our other Nekos. FWIW, I also have a neko AV. I am pretty much human all the time now but I came in to SL as a furry. So .... you never found Lady and the Tramp to be even just a little bit romantic? Jenna from Balto was not cute? There are some kitsune and quite a few fenik running around. You see them more in the full furry areas tho. As for why neko wear steampunk and emo style, it's just because the steampunk and emo styles are cool. I wear them too. But then again I have already stated I have a neko AV in storage. /me shrugs. But in any case, Welcome to the forums.

I dunno either but the tails are fun to pull.... And I crocheted one once without even knowing what a neko was.
