Everyone says that the list of surnames is randomly re-allocated, and I can't wait to fire off an alt with a funky name. However, whenever I go to look a tthe new signup dialog, I don't see any change in the name roster. Yet I see newcomers and people from different countries turning up all the time with interesting and different names!
Am I missing something? Where can I petition to get the name I want?

Not only that, but the "desirable" first names that can be used with the existing list are starting to get used up. I tried over the weekend to create a new alt with the first name "Molly". It's virtually impossible. I tried with the surnames that I found acceptable on the current list, and was told in each case that "Molly" followed by that surname was unavailable. So I started trying every blasted surname on the list. After 20 or so I gave up, and named the girl "Maire", which is the Irish given name that "Molly" is the diminutive of. Now she has to tell all her friends "My name is Maire, but please call me Molly."

There was a meeting about "Registration and Name Selection" on June 26th with Jesse Linden.
It seems unlikely that the freeze on last names wasn't brought up there, so if you can track someone down was who invited to that you could ask him/her about it.

Alas, you will have to contend with AOLese names such as John6969 or xXxShielaxXX for sometime.

When everyone signed that petition for "No New Features Until The Bugs Are Fixed" I think LL decided that new names were considered new features. You get what you ask for. *runs away!*

From: Ceera Murakami Not only that, but the "desirable" first names that can be used with the existing list are starting to get used up. I tried with the surnames that I found acceptable on the current list, and was told in each case that "Molly" followed by that surname was unavailable. Now she has to tell all her friends "My name is Maire, but please call me Molly." I also created a new alt this weekend, one for whom the name will be an important part of the character. I already knew about the problem with the current batch of names being overused, so I settled in for hours of searching to find an acceptable available one. After choosing the desired last name, I went inworld and used the people search... I found this more effective than checking availability on the web site. Because "people search" will return partial names, one search would tell me not just the base name but also all the used derivatives (for example: ocean, oceana, oceania, oceanea, oceanus, oceanis, oceanid). I knew the obvious ones would be taken, but I was surprised to see how even the obscure ones and their derivatives were gone. As I was inworld anyway, I decided to put my main av into a levitating lotus position so she would meditate upon creating the new persona. Okay, I was just sitting her down to get her to stop fidgeting, and then hid everything around her including her seat so my CPU wouldn't overheat from being inworld so long! But you know what? It worked! Not only did I locate the name of an obscure Australian Aboriginal goddess whose modus operandi perfectly fits my new character, but this first name is TOTALLY UNIQUE in SL! Seriously, what are the odds of that, and for a name that sounds like a rather normal woman's name too? Perhaps I should start a bizness... for L$10 you can watch my av meditate on your problem for an hour, while you scour google and wikipedia for the answer. And for an extra L$5, I'll do yoga animations!

It really helps a lot if you're flexible on the first name these days. I spent 2 days off and on looking for something that suited. I realized fairly quickly that I was very biased against many of the funky last names, so I picked a last name first and spent most of my time hunting for a first name that I liked.
While I would have been happy with any of the names I didn't get- I really really like the ring of Capella DeCuir now and I don't think I'd change it if given the choice.

And WAY better than what we've been seeing lately with all the John283734 Smiths. To me that just says "donut care boutz SL, jez heer 2 greef n getz moneez!"

From: Ava Glasgow ...while you scour google and wikipedia for the answer... I did the same thing when searching for a name for my alt. On SLNameWatch.com, there are handy links to Google, Wikipedia, and NNDB (notable name database) for each available last name. Maybe these links will make this task go faster for the next person who tries it.

What gets me is that every day even more John691 Allens join up, and they won't cease to exist when LL eventually get round to fixing what they broke. For evermore there will be the people who joined before 2007, who have little used last names, and the class of '07 of whom there are roughly 10,000+ avs per last name.

To be precise, there are an average of 13,974 avatars for each of the 315 currently available last names (maximum 127,010; minimum 2,413). Compare this to the average of 707 avatars per last name for all retired last names.

Interesting. How does one find how many avs share your last name? Just do a search in world? I'd be curious to see how large the Paperclip clan is EDIT: Found it! 852 and it's retired.

290 Launays...I didn't look at them all, but of the 20 or so I clicked on, only 2 had anything in their profiles.

From: Gummi Richthofen Where can I petition to get the name I want? I remember a few items in the old Feature Voting Tool where people would ask for a name and LL would respond. Maybe you could add a JIRA issue - new feature in WEB, I guess - and see if they bite...
