Woohoo, another opportunity to point out my favorite example of what's wrong with photorealistic skins (from SLProfiles). This avatar has haunted many a nightmare, I assure you:

I have yet to see a realistic skin that didn't creep me out. I like it being a virtual world. Kinda realistic with a touch of the cartoony look.

Hahahaha
Oh, my. How very 'special'. He actually looks like someone I know in RL. Maybe it's based on him. |

I zoomed in on someone's necklace at a club the other night and caught a glimpse of their face. It's wasn't one of those photorealistic ones but it was clearly very expensive and incredibly detailed, looking like a very real face. My only reaction: creeeeepy!!! Was like watching a corpse walking around. Even worse are the ones that have that insipid smile animation that has your mouth moving every few seconds. Who came up with that gem? Now you have a walking corpse that grins once in a while! I believe you're referring to "Uncanny Valley" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_Valley Mari _____________________

Woohoo, another opportunity to point out my favorite example of what's wrong with photorealistic skins (from SLProfiles). This avatar has haunted many a nightmare, I assure you: That is just wrong on so many levels. The sad thing is that the face probably looks much better in RL than in SL. I would hate to see the expressions that would happen on that face with an emoter. If I ever had any desire to use my RL face on my avie, these pictures have completely countered any such impulse. _____________________

Exactly! How photo real are you meaning? Is my avatar photo "too real" in this context? I don't think it is , But its a "photo-real" type skin. |

I noticed some skins in Nomine a while back. They looked good, but their claim to fame/perfection was that they were expressly designed to be used on certain shapes.
That makes sense to me, as the shading on sticky-outy(?) bits like shoulder blades, collar bones, elbows and so on would need careful matching to look really good. I suppose I'm stuck with generic skin. I rebel at the thought of changing my shape. It would be like being my alt. Wandering off a bit along the realism road: My dad tells me that many years ago, he went to a talk given by the guy who did the CGI for the first Aliens movie. It was really cutting edge apparently. When the director saw the computer-generated images of the spacecraft landing on the planet, he said that it was "too good/ too realistic" and that audiences would not accept it. They would assume it had been done with plastic models, and therefore a bit 'naff'. He had to put a lot of fuzziness into the images before they got used in the final version of the movie. I can understand that. I've seen a few avatars that have looked quite near human due to the excellence of the shape, the skin tones, the hair and clothing. They impressed me. However, when I see someone with a photo-realistic face, I recoil. I think that it's the contrast between the avatar world and the RL face. True humans are alien. |

However, the problem was that there's a point at which we subconsiously stop seeing an image as a 'really well-done cartoon' and start seeing it as a 'very creepy / disturbing / disfigured / unnatural real image'. Two words, Polar Express. Nothing like watching a bunch of kid corpses running around to bring out the holiday spirit in me *heavy sarcasm*. It's like a Christmas version of Night Of The Living Dead, their faces freak me out LOL |

I think it looks just right for SL. I've seen it closer, also, since I've read every regular posters profile. (yes, I like reading profiles, and it's how I've learned about some of my favorite shops......lol) The picture that Wildefire posted is a perfect example of what I mean. I'm talking about the skins which are based on RL pictures of the person behind the avatar. It just looks creepy to see a face that realistic in SL. To be honest, I can't even say why it creeps me out. I think it's because I don't expect that in a virtual world...I expect more of what Bradley spoke about. _____________________

Can you imagine someone making a softwear package that you run and input two photos of yourself... one from the front nude, and one from the back nude, and automatically crafts a SL skin for you (placing it just where it needs to be) from them down to every detail. I don't even look at my self in the mirror (except to shave). Taking a full nude photo at my age would be scary. I don't think I could afford a photographer even willing to do such a thing. (except maybe a CSI they have a strong stomach) "CX" _____________________

Yes the picture wildfire posted scares me too. I would tp away from that guy if I saw him in world. It doesn't look sized right either it looks like a photo-bobble head SL avatar. |

I've also seen male skins with hairy backs and butts. Momma no like. That is a great one. Personally, I have mine look like a RL version of me. I can just imagine what the future will be with our Avatars on SL. I have no problem with a realistic skin I don't know if I would like the animated grins thou... I am just thinking one day we will have our own SL halo decks and it will just put RL "us" in the second life. Then we will really see all the detailed skin flaws lol. |

Yes, that one isn't just creepy...it's kind of sinister.....lol. I'm sure they're not all that bad, but still too much for me. _____________________

My forum avatar say "Drive a Volkswagen Naked" but actually the Sisal padding and horse hair in the seats is pretty itchy. My ancestors are originally from Canada, down here we are called Acadians or Cajuns for short. That guy wildfire posted looks like one of Hanibal Lector's victums. "CX" _____________________

The question is, where did his neck go? The Tron thing they do to get him on the grid must shorten it. |
