First of all it was 'the Code', then came 'Griefers', 'Skyboxes' and 'In-World Liaisons'. Today we have the bizarrely named 'Sploders'. Though I would not consider myself a total newb anymore I do sometimes find myself struggling with the 'lingo' from time to time. So I had this moment of inspiration..why not start a 'Dictionary of Second Life Terminology' containing both slang and official SL terms to assit the struggling beginner. Aimed at explaining some of the 'jargon' used both here in the forum and In World. So I'm asking everyone in the forum from newb to veteran to contribute a word or term each (or as many as they wish), along with - and THIS is quite important - what they think is a suitable explanatory definition. I guess it's over to you the forum readers and contributers then.. thanks very much in advance, Perre

I was making one of these in-world at one point. Although a lot of what was in it has changed now.
At least it's not as bad as it was when newbies were routinely asking what FIC meant.

From: SuezanneC Baskerville Yep I had a look at the 'wiki' a little while ago - takes a bit of figuring out and doesn't really include the informal terminology, which is what this is about. 'Sploder, Ginkoed, FIC' and the like to name a few.

The very fact that you are asking shows that you are not a noob, but instead a newb.
Noobs are vile creatures, better entertained by WoW. They have no desire to learn or improve themselves.
Newbs on the other hand are new or inexperienced players. A Newb will improve in some way other than the newest way to grief.
It does seem most NOOBS are male, usually a with a prim penis hanging out and rudely accosting every female in sight.
While a NEWB may use some leet speak, it makes up 80% of the NOOB's vocabulary.

As most of us 'oldies' are already familiar with abreviations and the 'lingo', perhaps from your current persepective, you might wish to list the lingo that you need to know the meaning of, rather that entice a long drawn out thread?

From: Perre Anatine So I'm asking everyone in the forum from newb to veteran to contribute a word or term each (or as many as they wish), along with - and THIS is quite important - what they think is a suitable explanatory definition. There was an SL dictionary in-world (still available at YadNi's) many moons ago, but the person who made it has long since left the game. I'd love to see someting like dat again, but way updated. There was a thread a couple weeks ago on dis too. A lotta good examples in there /327/3c/196838/1.htmlThe ones I listed there were... "Blingtard" - derogatory term for a user who wears to much bling "First Life" - Abbreviated as FL. the consentual world. "IM Coma" - when someone is stuck in so many Ims they cannot take action onscreen. "IMmobilized" - See IM Coma "Landbot" (also copybot, malbot) - no definition necessary "SLarcolepsy" - the "away" bug Mari

From: AWM Mars As most of us 'oldies' are already familiar with abreviations and the 'lingo', perhaps from your current persepective, you might wish to list the lingo that you need to know the meaning of, rather that entice a long drawn out thread? The problem is that most newb's don't know the 'lingo' in the first place, so; it would be impossible to list the unknown lingo in an bid to understand the unknown lingo..If you see what I mean... Of course the newb or confused reader could always request an explanation by adding a reply within the thread they are reading, which might entice an immediate response or possibly not, alternatively they could turn to this thread for an explanation. By it's very nature this thread could prove long and drawn out or at least untill I suppose we run out of unknown lingo.

From: Object Pascale Fetid or feted? I always thought FIC was coined by the batshit crazy woman. Im going with Fetid - Since Feted means something that doesnt fit the term- fet·ed also fêt·ed, fet·ing also fêt·ing, fetes also fêtes 1. To celebrate or honor with a festival, a feast, or an elaborate entertainment. 2. To pay honor to. Where Fetid means "Smells Rotten" fetid 1599, from L. fetidus "stinking," from fetere "have a bad smell, stink." Perhaps connected with fimus "dung," or with fumus "smoke." ---------------------------------------- It was Prok who coined the term. I have no idea if he is a "batshit crazy woman" or not.

1. To celebrate or honor with a festival, a feast, or an elaborate entertainment. 2. To pay honor to. The original term was "feted", and I don't see how that definition doesn't fit. Prok's original definition wasn't a conspiracy theory, it just wound up being understood that way because of Prok using it as a personal attack and because of the term being mocked. "A limited group of people who have increased access to community leaders, and who are celebrated and to whom honour is paid," was pretty much the original definition. Notice that this is not, intrinsically, a bad thing - unless you are selling a world on the promise of every single person being able to realise their own imagination.

Except that "Feted" isnt an Adjective. Perhaps originally it was a mispelling. Plus in context it always came off as the FIC was "Corrupt".
