Voice IM, As Well As Voice Chat
04-27-2007 21:42
To me the prob with voice chat as it has been beta'd is that it is strictly 'chat'. How many folks want their love lives broadcast to anyone within 20m radius, or perhaps their business transactions, etc. LL should start with voice IM. Chat should require a on/off function that lets you chose, what you broadcast and what you don't. Just open voice chat is asking for trouble.
I chose no, as the question said 'THIS' voice chat. I firmly believe in voice chat, just not THIS system.

Seeing as how I am a 110-year old WW1 war veteran in real life, my voice doesn't really match teh twenty-something avatar I have, so I voted no.
Alternative explanation:
If I wanted to talk to a crowd, I'd hie me down to Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park. Online, I prefer to talk to close friends only, for which the technology already exists in a stable form (skype, teamtalk, etc).
Alternative explanation:
I don't want you guys to hear the baby screaming in the background.
Alternative explanation:
My RL job is as a voiceover artist. You wanna hear my voice? That's 60 dollars a minute please, in advance.
Pick one.

From: Colette Meiji This thread (which I started) was right after the feature was announced. In case people missed it it was mildly necromanced. 3-01-07. A lot of people didnt read the OP of course becuase the Poll was suppoded to assume that the Lag impact was as neglible as the Lindens Claimed it would. Judging by the responses I think that the vote would have been a lot closer if all the "I voted no becuase of bugs/lag" had abstained. It might even have been reverse. My main concern is people who are less considerate than the average Forums goer will be pressuring people to use it, thus making people feel unwelcome in some areas. I have heard that this wont happen, but Im surprized people think that - Since it already happens with Teamspeak and Skype. Well see how it goes. I think I will try it sometime when I have the house to myself, but I am also certain that I will develop a pretty irrational dislike for people who judge others based on whether they will voice or not. I agree, Colette. I'm convinced that this will happen. I'll probably use it just to talk to close friends but that's it. Or I won't use it at all. Text is so much easier, especially since I have friends that don't have English as their native language. They can now think about what to type but when they have to speak..... Mandy C

There are many benefits of using text over voice.

I've seen a couple polls like this and in every one of them the results show that the majority of people don't want voice on SL, yet LL is still putting it on. That's customer service for you.

That's customer service for you. I'm actually gonna side with The Lindens here. They feel adding this will benefit their interests. That is what they are supposed to do. The technical ramifications are beyond me. The social ones are my concern. How it is implemented is the issue. I do think it should off by default, Sim owners that want it enabled should pay Nominal fee for it, which they can pass on to their customers or tenants, non land owners should pay a chrge to have it enabled individually and it should not be available to unverifieds, thereby keeping it out of the hands of every, Tom, Dick and Dick griefer that comes along.

Since LL will be paying a third-party for hosting the voice servers that extra cost in running the grid should be compensated by both land owners (for land-based voice), and individual voice users (for private one-on-one). Asking land owners to carry the full cost still isn't quite fair.

(Most) voice users probably wouldn't be willing to pay for it since they're currently using it for free using external applications, so the burden falls on everyone else to fiance it.

This is true - why should people who dont want (or care) if voice is added have to pay the cost for others? Secnd Life Voice - Proposal Free Voice - This service is absolutely free to everyone - Commercials play once every 10 minutes into the users earphones. Paid voice - No Commercials play

I own land, I'm not gonna use it, I don't want to pay for it. I will edit my post accordingly. since I am in agreement with you actually.
