As many of you have seen I guess now there is a video on youtube that clearly shows the next implementation by LL , does anyone have any clue on when this will happen , and how and eventually if is ossible to enter in a sort of betatest group for the meshes tests?

We know from a post by Q to SLDEV that mesh import will *not* be part of Viewer 2.0. In some office hour or another (Nyx's maybe?), somebody mentioned that there is an ongoing beta and that one might contact Alexa if interested in joining it. Those currently in the beta are bound by NDAs, so they won't be talking about it.

Bear in mind that these days, anyone involved in a beta will have to sign some such NDA (upon which competent counsel might frown).

Hatched before chickens counted no!

This will take some time to develop and think through. I'm guessing another year at least.

While I'd love to have this feature "right now," I'd rather have them take their time with new features that make major changes to the grid.

Most likely. As well as buying them from third parties which may or may not even be present in Second Life itself.

PS, Alexa who?

I haven't heard anything about allowing avatar mesh modifications. The proposed mesh import would only be static objects-- think of them as super sculpts.

Of course, you could make some very nice avatars using mesh objects as attachments, just as there are avatars made of sculpted and regular prims right now.

Alexa Linden. Sorry, I didn't mean to "name drop" or anything: it's not as if Alexa and I are on a first name basis or anything. :o I'm not sure we've ever met, in fact, except at bug triages.

Shush! You signed a do not disclose aa . . wait, how'd you get a copy? Well, as long as you do not have a copy of the secret sanctuary. Or reveal said plans. Or a map to it. Or the passcode (*t9@444911*), all is good.

I just hope that anything imported using a new mesh, whenever that comes about, renders a lot quicker than sculpties. And/or if not, then at least I hope people will not go hog wild with them. Like now. Where many a teleport will end with me looking around at grey. And giant breasts (why do scupties look like giant grey breasts with nipples before they start to rez into whatever shape they are supposed to be? Seriously, I have always wondered about the choice to render them that way when they first appear on the screen)

Not likely, animated meshes aren't going to be there right away, so there will be no rigging for it. I suppose however you could upload multiple meshes and link them to the avatar via attachment points (and hide the avatar via debug settings).

I doubt it. You might be able to buy one and wear it...

But I suspect they'll basically be like sculpties, only with more lag.

Meshes will have the potential to cause much less lag as they can be designed specifically.
Whereas sculpties always have a set number of vertices regardless of the amount of detail you need or do not need.

I guess you could try attending one of the Monday bug triage sessions to see if you can catch her in-world at that time. See http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Bug_Triage for info on those--and note: "Please do not send private IMs to the Lindens running the meeting as they are not able to answer them and run the meeting."

For all I know, they very well may already have all the testers they want for this feature. About the only benefit to the participant might be an early look at whatever they're planning as implementation limits (max vertices, etc).

I'm less enthused about meshes these days. They should be dramatically more efficient than sculpties, but unless the developers have something unexpected planned, I'd expect meshes to have similar limitations as sculpties: there won't be much a script can do with them, and they, too, will just get one surface texture to use for the whole mesh. They'll make some pretty prims, no doubt, so that will be fun for some people.
