Vista conspiracy?

My understanding is that a lot of new people are discovering SL, and most of them are discovering that they don't have enough computer. But they can't buy a new computer, because new computers run Vista, and Vista can't run SL.

Suppose some brain trust at Microsoft noticed that this upstart SL thing could be the wave of the future. And they're way behind on that type of app. So, how to they buy time to catch up?

How about they realease a new operating system that is incompatable with the upstart, and choke the life out of it by preventing users of new computers from accessing the upstart.

Who says Vista can't run SL?
I am running SL just fine, there was one "optional" client that made me crash a lot but I am not sure if it was because of Vista...

If you can't find your hat, I've got extras :)

SL also works fine on Vista for me, though I rarely use Vista unless it's on a work machine :)

I just purchased a new PC... and of course, thinking I needed to up the RAM and all that good stuff, but duh... I didnt check to see if SL was compatible with Vista. Well this is the only program I am really having problems with. Can we compare PC specs to trouble shoot. Gimme a hint, how do you know when its vista and when it isnt? Any assist would be great, as this is the only game I hadnt played for months and was itching to get back to! HELPPPPP. giggles. I wanna play too.

Nvidia Geforce 7600 GS (512 mb) AGP 8x

Hi,

I also have Vista on my pc and SL works fine. I sometimes crash but that's because of SL I think.

My machine:

Dell Dimension 9200 Viiv 2 Duo Core 2.4 GHz
Windows Vista Ultilmate 32bit
4096Mb RAM Dual channel DDR2 (4x 1024)
640GB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce 7900GS 256MB

This is too funny.

Setting aside for the moment the fact that many of us are running SL on Vista with no problems at all...

Even if Microsoft was the True Source of All Evil (tm), it would take more than a measly few million "users" (most of those duplicate accounts) to even make their radar. Given that such a low-level "tweak" is unlikely to happen late in the development cycle when the Windows folks are working 80-hour weeks just trying to get the thing out the door before the stock price takes another nosedive, and given that SL was barely noticed by anybody until less than a year ago, I think it's safe to say that it didn't happen.

Funny thing about operating systems - people tend not to buy them if their favorite apps and games won't run on them.

Microsoft just about completely crippled all bluetooth support in vista.

I doubt SL is high on their agenda of stuff to make useless :D

/me too

now if that wasn't an excuse for dismissing any and all support requests that have nothing to do with Vista but because ONE of my computers run it...

:/

Oh, is it so?

My crash is the following: I'm walking around in SL and suddenly the viewer stops. Just closes down without reason...

And what can we do about it? Is there an update for the Nvidia driver available?

For the record, I was playing one day for 11 hours and only had 1 crash like this... I don't have it all the time.

I sometimes get a little pop-up telling me there was a problem with the graphics card but that it has recovered.. but not always. Seems to happen pretty randomly.

Apparently there are issues with other graphics intensive games with nvidia/vista and a fix is being worked on... the latest driver (4th May?) doesn't help... just keep checking the driver download page at nvidia.com for new releases.

Yeah, I think Microsoft spent millions of dollars and spent years working on an OS that wouldnt work for a few users of SL. I expect Bill Gates spent a lot of sleepless nights plotting ways to annoy a small percentage of the SL community by making Vista uncompatable with SL on a few machines so that he could release his own version of SL sometime in the future.

The guy is a genius!

I get the same pop-up sometimes too and the SL-viewer turns black and doesn't do anything anymore. It indeed happens randomly and not all the time if i'm in SL.

I'll keep checking the Nvidia driver download page and let u know if i find something to help...

Microsoft is deliberately harming Open GL, not Second Life. That Second Life is affected by Vista changes is not deliberate, but if someone tells Microsoft they'll probably pause, think for a second and say "actually, that works to our advantage!"

If MS ever did create a platform to rival SL you can gaurentee that it will have more bugs and be more expensive as thats the way they roll.
